I imagine it's going to be awful hard to trade up enough to get him unless we have that #2 pick...

This years 1st, 4th and next years 2nd

If he falls in the 9-11 range of the draft

I don't think he's going to fall that far.

I guess you don't want Surtain?

Personally I believe this is a formality and there is no hope we are drafting him. This is just in case a miracle occurs and he falls to us.

This is so Carl can say to the fans; "well, we tried to trade and we tried to sign, but no one excepted our offers."

Hopefully when Carl says it he'll have the sense to use the word "accepted," rather than "excepted."

with three 5th round and two 6th and 7th round picks I think KC I can think of something to get into the 9-11 range

They'd still have to find a trade partner. And they'd probably have to give up the 2nd rounder, which most people expect to go to Miami...

They can trade this year's first and fifth with next year's second round pick, and maybe even include a player such as Morton or even our beloved Bartee.

I've heard all kinds of rumors that SF is looking to trade down. Wouldn't you like to hear the words, "...and with the first pick of the draft, Kansas City selects Derrick Johnson, linebacker, out of Texas."

Keep next years draft picks. That is what has us in a bind right now. And the signing bonus for the top pick in the draft would be a killer. I would much rather get DJ late top 10.

If we could find a willing trade partner in the 7-9 range, would you trade up and try to get A. Rolle or D. Johnson or sit at 15 and target C. Rogers?

hypothetical trade up scenarios:

Give
#15 (1st)
#46 (2nd)

Vikings:
#7 (1st)
#80 (3rd)

Cardinals:
#8 (1st)
#75 (3rd)

Redskins:
#9 (1st)
#76 (3rd)

If Johnson were still on the board for any of the 7-9 selections, I would like to see us make a trade like the scenarios above. As an added bonus, we could use the 3rd we gain to trade for Surtain. I would only trade up to pick up Johnson and I don't think we should try to trade up higher than the 7-9 slots. If Johnson is off the board by then, I would stay at #15 and target a CB or try to move down a few spots (still target a CB) and pick up an additional 3rd (to use for Surtain).

I think we HAVE to get Surtain. Our biggest hole is at CB and we need a solid veteran there. If we can move up in the first and still get Surtain, I'm for it. But I think it's risky to give up our second rounder if that's all the possible payment we have for Surtain. I'd say get enough 2nd or 3rd round pick BEFORE you go moving up.

CB has been the biggest need on the team for a few years. They need to address it this year. Giving up the 2nd round pick for an unproven player isn't going to help the passing game. I'd take Surtain.

There is not way in he!! we're gonna move up 6-8 spots into the top10, and ONLY cost us moving down 30-32 picks from the 2nd to 3rd. NO WAY!!

Try those trade scenarios in this pick value calculator. (http://footballguys.com/pickvalue.htm) Considering that this draft is relativley deep throughout, and does not have many players who are clearly far better than their contemporaries, teams are more likely to move down. Of course should a team seek a little more compensation, one of our 4th round or later picks could be added to sweeten the deal. These trade scenarios are not outside the realm of possibility despite your unsubstantiated assertation to that effect.

Yes, Derrick Johnson will help more ways than one which includes pass coverage, rushing the qb, and run defense

Using the calculator we could trade a 4th, 5th, 6th and move up to #9.
