Go to maps.google.com, enter your home address, then click "satellite". Google bought a satellite and now has a satellite photo of just about anywhere.

Cool stuff. But kind of creepy too. I'm sure Ashcroft is to blame. Burn him!!!! :fire:

They've had that for a long time. I believe it was Rainman that posted this thread a year ago.... not to steal your thunder or anything.

This is the first implementation of it with their new mapping software. What the had before was Keyhole (http://www.keyhole.com/).

Terraserver?

Maybe but I don't think so last time I used that had a photo of my area 10 years ago. This one had a picture of my development right before they started the next phase 1 1/2 years ago.

I would say a Royals game, look at the cars parked at the K, nothing at Arrowhead.

That and you can almost see the make believe players that Glass has put out there. :banghead:

There is way too many cool things to find! I love how easy it is to access too.. Screw Mapquest and yahoo maps forever now...

The company producing these shots is Digitalglobe, in Colorado... I have buddies that still work there so I need to ask them for full resolution images...

This is new to Google, but it's not new technology. As people have mentioned, Microsoft's terraserver has been doing it for years. Google recently acquired Keyhole and integrated that technology into it's maps application.

The huge advancement here, as with most things Google, is in the user interface. Their use of Ajax (XMLHttpRequest) here is brilliant.

many of these images are from 1997, the same ones from terraserver. you can see where the newer, clearer ones begin. keyhole is a pay service and its been out for a little while.

oh shux it quit working for me as soon as i typed in groom lake

Sweet. It's clearly using some much more recent photos than Terraserver, what with Autozone Park and FedExForum (albeit under construction) in the photo. Must have been around winter 2003, since the Forum was pretty far along and the grass (see the berm at AZP or just right of FEF) is brown.

Zoomed really close in on Iraq, and I think I've found something interesting... I'm not saying it's proof of WMD, but I'd like to see him explain this stuff under oath...

Here ya go...

Hey, I used to drive by there every day!

Just to the right of that pic is Kolb Rd. I took it to work, right through the middle of the boneyard, every day when I lived in Tucson.

Kickass! I wonder though if these kinds of things should be accessable to the public eyes... cuz I'm just saying
:hmmm:

Odd. If these pics were taken after 2001 they've been edited, and I have no idea why. My neighborhood is about as mundane as they come...

Edit: my memory is $#it.

Whats really weird looking is when you find a seam in the map where they connected two images together that were taking at a different time of season and the roads don't match up, and many of the buildings are cut in half and offset.

Mapped areas seem to vary in age of photo, some in real rural areas don't have zoom pictures.

The ones of my house are at least 2 years old. My neighbors house is not even built yet..... So much for the idea of mooning the satellite ROFL

you can clearly see where some sections are newer than others.
also, if you look where they spliced the newer with the older, you can see how "off" the are

Yeah all the pictures are from different times. Olathe has some from a couple years ago and then there are other places where the "new" McDonalds isn't even there. (151st street).

The Dolphins Stadium pic was taken a few days before January 2, 2003 because you can read "IOWA" and "USC" in the endzones, the two participants in the 2003 Orange Bowl.

Interesting. That assessor link for one of my neighbors yields no data at all.

I wonder if it's only coincidence that she's a Maricopa County prosecutor. I guess some people are entitled to more privacy than others.

Duh.
