View Full Version : Johnson close to deal with Chiefs - per Trenton Times

Free-agent wide receiver Kevin Johnson, the former Hamilton High standout, spent yesterday in Kansas City talking with the Chiefs top personnel people and could be close to a deal with the team.

Johnson, who opted out of his contract with the Baltimore Ravens last month, flew home last night, but was hopeful a contract with the Chiefs could get done possibly as soon as today.

"Things went well," Johnson said from the Kansas City airport. "I like it here. It's a good organization with good people. I'm hoping things work out."

Johnson's agent, Tom Condon, is based in Kansas City and will talk to the Chiefs today.

If Johnson, who led the Ravens in receptions last year with 35 (a career-low for him) signs with the Chiefs he would join another Mercer County native, Gary Stills, on the roster. It would mark the first time two players from Mercer County played for the same NFL team.

As long as he doesn't give up like Morton would sometimes do, I'd be all for it. :)

** can't believe the Chiefs are being this active in free agency **

A receiver that can catch and isnt afraid to, i think he'd fit nicely.

I think this would be a good signing and we could probably get him fairly cheap.

KJ is a pretty good WR. I'm all for this signing. He doesn't drop many passes and he runs good routes. He also gives a veteran who has shown he can get it done on the field.

Has Morton been cut yet? Either way I don't like this signing, but if we still plan on having Morton on the team then this signing would make no sense to me.

I seriously doubt that Morton will be on the roster after June 1st if we make this signing... he is simply too expensive for his production and refuses to restructure. send him packing!

He's not really what I would call a #1 receiver though which is what I thought we needed. We have enough #2 and 3 guys on the roster now.

Johnson is an updrade IMO. Look at the quarterbacks he has had to play with Couch, Holcomb, Boller, etc. In this offense I truly believe he can regain he 80+ catch form.

KJ has great hands from everything I have read and is still only 28 yrs old.

I believe he will be what the Chiefs were looking for when they brought in Morton.

Kevin Johnson, as a replacement for pillow-biter = good signing.
Kevin Johnson, as our addition to the WR corps = meh signing.
Kevin Johnson, as the only WR move this off-season = :grr:

Your high if you don't think Kevin Johnson is an upgrade over Johnnie Morton. KJ will equal or better Morton's production, is younger, cheaper, and will not fake an injury to get out of training camp. Morton won't even come to spring workouts. He's at home, "working out."

Johnnie Morton is a real prick. I met him in person, and instantly lost respect for the guy.

That's the reason Morton felt so comfortable getting stripped from behind by opposing CB's. He thought it was foreplay.

If this happen, I'll be very happy. Johnson can play and would instantly upgrade our WR's. Shoot, I'd even keep Morton, but only IF he takes less money.

He certainly made the coaches in Cleveland happy

He better be cheap because I certainly don't expect much out of him. We have younger, more athletic guys waiting in the wings. DV needs to get over his obsession that he needs a veteran at every position. This isn't the old days where he and Allen could field the over the hill gang.

As much as I agree, Shottenheimer was worse. Sh*t, you couldn't see the field unless you were nearing retirement with him.

Morton is scheduled to make $3M this year and the rest of his pro-rated bonus isn't chump change either.

Johnson can play - no he's not spectacular, but he can HANG ONTO THE BALL.

This gives us much more freedom in the draft. In fact, it allows us to give up the 2nd if we absolutely have to to get Surtain.

Why not? Could be another Kennison. He and Priest were certainly utilized better after coming here, and Kennison's attitude was questioned too.

I also not worried about the fact he only caught 35 balls last year.

He LED THE TEAM.

That's indicative of a problem with the Ravens offense, and their lack of a QB...

In Cleveland, he had a young QB (Couch) with no offensive line to speak of protecting that young QB.

I'm good with the idea of signing, but with everybody downing Morton, keep in mind when we brought him in he was nothing less than solid in Detroit. He hit a wall here and never climbed over... although, he was set to break 1,000 yds. this year, IIRC, before his "injury."

Morton is an f-ing sissy. I lost all respect for that so called model when he didn't catch the ball multiple times in one game because he was affraid of getting hit. I know everybody remembers that game. It was very obvious that we didn't want to catch the ball because he thought he would get nailed. He sucks, he is a fairy, and I could catch the ball better then him. I would look better doing it as well!

The big question is.....how much more are we going to pay Johnson than New England paid Terrell (1 year, $700,000)?

Because I would take Terrell over KJ in a heartbeat.

Your going out on a thin limb there. David Terrell is one of the bigger head cases in the NFL. He has lost games for Chicago by getting unsportsmanlike penalties after grabbing his first catch of the day (in the 4th quarter). Terrell is hated by about every Bears fan known to man.

Terrell said he is top 5 WR in the NFL on Boehrs and Bernstein a season ago.

The fact NE signed him tells me more is right about Terrell than not....Their personel decisions the passed 5 years speaks for itself. Someone not working out with the Bears doesn't say much as nearly nobody has worked out well for them over the passed 5-10 years.

N.E is a dynasty, however, just because they sign a player doesn't mean he's going to be the next Jerry Rice. David Terrell is a headcase. He has been since College. He's got the Keyshawn Johnson syndrome. He thinks he is better than he really is. The problem is Terrell hasn't acomplished half of what Key Johnson has.

Just because the Pats signed Monty Beisel, does that mean he will be a Pro Bowler? Hell no. The Pats make mistakes just like any other team...Just not as many.
