Yeah it is a late game. And yeah, I know it's Los Angeles Angels at Anaheim, but who really wants to type all of that? :)

I might as well call them the California Angels.

I hope Bautista blows them away.

The angels have owned the 'Royals.

I like this team. We need some middle relief. Pathetic yesterday.

I can't wait to watch Batista. I am glad to finally get out of Springfield watch a Royals game. I always got blacked out or had the Cardinals down my throat.

Nice to see Bryd also. I just hope Pickering and the boys don't give him whiplash tonight. :p

I cannot wait until the Royals are more than 1 game under 500 for good so these drive to 500 threads will stop. Matter of fact I hope they get to 10 games under quickly so all Royals threads stop.

Good God, what is Pena's obsession with playing washed up veterans? Why are we having a youth movement if we are playing Graffanino every ****ing day? He is a utility player, no more no less. I would much rather see Teahen and Gotay go through their ups and downs rather then see Graffy's mediocre ass in the lineup. I almost hope we don't do well this season so we can fire Pena's dumbass this year. Bring in Bobby Valentine.

There was an article in the Star today about that... said there has been a ton of complaints about it. The RSTN people said the scoreboard looks great in the production truck at the game but after it gets filtered through satellites and whatnot into your TV, it doesn't look as good. Once this road trip is over and everybody comes home, they're gonna work on making it clearer.

Lima's the veteran, he's just got more experience... those three young guys probably will be our best three pitchers. If Brian Anderson pitches as well as he did this spring, Lima might be our 5th best starter. I'm not sure if I agreed with starting Lima opening day either, but what's done is done, it's one game of 162. Plus, it allowed them to set it up so Hernandez/Greinke/Bautista pitch the first home series at the K next week...

As for our "big three" young stud pitchers, Hernandez/Greinke/Bautista, over the last three days, this is what they've done....

17.1 IP, 12 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 12 K

2-0 record, 1.02 ERA, 0.85 WHIP

Pretty darn good. I don't expect them to be this great, but if they can be solid, we'll have a fighting shot 3 out of every 5 days, and Lima and Anderson aren't great but they can shine on good days. Now we've just gotta get the bullpen together, although Affeldt really hasn't pitched in a pressure situation yet, hopefully when that comes he'll crank it up a notch.

Bautista throws a gem for first career victory

By BOB DUTTON

The Kansas City Star

ANAHEIM, Calif. — This is the pitcher the Royals believe Denny Bautista can be. Electric. Overpowering. And virtually unhittable.

Bautista was all that and maybe a little more Friday night in a thoroughly dominant 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the opening game of a three-game weekend series.

Bautista allowed just one run and three hits in eight innings. He struck out eight and walked none before Jeremy Affeldt surrendered one run in the ninth.

It was Bautista's first major-league victory — and buddy, it was one impressive coming-out party in front of 39,167 at Angel Stadium.

Bautista retired the first eight hitters and later set down 14 in a row before Robb Quinlan looped a two-out single in the eighth. Bautista threw 102 pitches, including 68 for strikes.

The unlucky opponent for all this was an old friend, Paul Byrd, an ex-Royal who lasted seven innings in his first start for the Angels. He allowed six runs and nine hits while striking out four and walking none.

The Royals backed Bautista, 1-0, with a balanced 10-hit attack that included two hits from each of the top three hitters in the lineup: David DeJesus, Tony Graffanino and Mike Sweeney.

Five different players drove in runs; Sweeney drove in two.

The Royals grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Calvin Pickering reached on an error. Second baseman Chone Figgins was playing on the outfield grass — so deep that when he bobbled the grounder, even Pickering was able to make it safely to first.

Byrd, 0-1, then nicked Emil Brown with a pitch before Terrence Long flared an RBI single into left-center. Brown took third and scored on Ruben Gotay's one-out sacrifice fly.

The Royals conjured up a double web gem in the second when shortstop Angel Berroa flagged down Steve Finley's grounder over second and threw to first, where Sweeney did the splits in reaching for the catch.

Know what? Finley might have been safe, but style won out. It was that kind of night for Bautista and the Royals.

DeJesus extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a leadoff single in the third inning. That tied Amos Otis' 1974 streak for the seventh longest in club history. Tops is 30 by George Brett in 1980.

DeJesus then stole second — the Royals' first successful steal of the season in four attempts. He scored on Pickering's two-out bloop single for a 3-0 lead.

Bautista rolled through the first eight hitters. But the eighth, Quinlan, hit a chopper up the middle that Bautista grabbed at with his pitching hand.

He knocked it down and threw out Quinlan, but manager Tony Peña and others quickly huddled around Bautista to check for a possible injury.

The incident was far too similar to Thursday, when Zack Greinke left the game in the third inning after being hit in the right forearm by a line drive off the bat of Detroit's Carlos Guillen.

Bautista was able to continue, although he gave up a single to the next hitter, Figgins, who quickly stole second. Bautista quelled the threat by fooling Darin Erstad on swinging third strike for his fifth strikeout.

The Angels broke through in the fourth after Jeff DaVanon opened the inning with a double past third. DaVanon hit for the cycle against the Royals last Aug. 25 when the Angels completed a seven-game sweep of the season series with a 21-6 victory.

DaVanon went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Garret Anderson's one-out grounder to short. Bautista closed the inning by slipping a called third strike past Finley for his seventh strikeout — a career high.

The Royals responded immediately with a two-run fifth. DeJesus pulled a one-out triple past first and scored when Graffanino pushed a suicide-squeeze bunt past Byrd for an RBI single.

Sweeney made it 5-1 by lining an RBI double past third and into the left-field corner.

Doubles by Graffanino and Sweeney in the seventh pushed the lead to 6-1.
