I'm sure this will turn into a "that band sucks-fest" but oh well..... the Eagles thread got me wondering....

My three favorite...

Funny, two of mine are the Dead and the Beatles as well. My third is Steve Earle.

I listen to too much music, though, so my "favorite" band changes all the time. I haven't actually put a Dead or Beatles CD into my changer in over a year, but the impact that they had on my course in life gives them hall of fame tenure.

That's kinda the way I looked at it—which band made me look at music differently the first time I heard them.

By that criteria, it was hard to leave Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Beastie Boys off the list.

Same for me. I don't constantly listen to any of the three I listed but in the end they're the ones who have had the most influence on my musical tastes and will always have my loyalty... even if they do something that sucks....which has happened in all three cases.

I understand that. It seems in many cases that any band that someone calls their favorite of all time isn't their favorite of all time because of commercial succcesses. It seems to be "the other stuff' that really hooks a true fan.

I love Miles, but I'd be pressed to put him in my top three. This poll should be your top five- three is too difficult.

But, as far as I know the bands that have always, always been in my CD rotation are as follows:

The Grateful Dead

The Doors

Pink Floyd

Therefore, they'd have to be my top three. Widespread Panic is becoming one of my favorites, and bands like Railroad Earth and Donna the Buffalo are moving on up as well.

A friend of mine who has a recording studio snorts at me for liking the Indigo Girls. He says they're trite. There's something about acoustics and good storytelling lyrics that really draws me in, though.

While his work is uneven, I'm a big fan of Ben Folds. Some of his albums are atrocious, but others are amazing.

Stupid question. Did Green Day do that song that plays on the final episode of Seinfeld. It contains the lyrics "I hope you had the times of your lives" or something like that. I really like that song, but I can never find it in the record store.

(Wow. Perhaps I should stop saying 'record store.' What's the proper term now? Music store? That doesn't sound right.)

Yeah, that's them, except most of the rest of their stuff is faster and punkier. That's their 'every rose has it's thorn.'

Hmmm,

1. Dream Theater (easy choice)

The rest, I don't know. It depends on the day, month, year. I have tons of bands that I like. It depends on if I'm currently into them a lot. Or maybe if it's a newer cd that I've purchased. Like right now I'm really into Shinedown and Queens of the Stone Age. But that always changes.

DT was an easy choice because they always come out with something that is quality music. And they change their approach/style every album while remaining true to the original DT sound. I am never disappointed in a DT album.

Which song are you speaking of? There isn't a song titled "Time of Your Life" on Dookie. Dookie is a great disc though.
Only thing I could think of is 'when I come around.' But that's not really close, although it is one of their lighter numbers. But that has nothing to do with the title itself.

Ugh!! I'm a rambling b!tch with nothing to offer.

Also somewhat surprised nobody has mentioned Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson, Run DMC, Elton John, Tina Turner, Johnny Cash, or Hank Williams.

what a cool thread.

Only problem is, there are so many genres to choose from, but i'd have to say:

The Beatles
Nirvana
Frank Zappa

...all because they SINGLEHANDEDLY started entire genres of rock...

I think that's what makes a band "great".
just my opinion.
