Is this thread to reassure me that I've made the right decision? :D

Nah - I just took the pictures in the past week and pulled them off the camera today. Emailed them to a potential client and saw the Planet was slow so I figured I'd brag a little.

I like this kind of stuff. I think your project is gonna really kick ass.

No, but if you want to meet her, you'll have to buy some of her baked goods. She operates a bakery out of the kitchen.

I didn't pull a permit on the most recent deck. It was only 3 feet off the ground and the customer didn't want to delay.

Okay, look at those stairs. Why did you leave the stair fronts open like that? Why not throw a board over it and close it up?

They'll be closed in a few weeks. Customer went over budget and ran out of material. I'll be going back sometime next month to make a couple adjustments such as the open stairs. Nice eye.

The best part about that deck doesn't even show up in any of the pics. It's a redwood bar that is hiding behind the guy's grill. It turned out really pretty.

There will also be large ceiling fan installed in the overhead area.

Sorry you didn't like Zon. Bring 'em over here tomorrow afternoon. I'll drink them, feed you a burger, and the kiddos can play.

I'll post some pics of our job we did on a house on 26th and ave. P (Bernardo de Galvez). You have to keep in mind I am a technician at JSC and my wife is a massage therapist.
We started the week after Xmas and are now 99% done. Total new plumbing and electrical, redoo hardwood floors (lifting carpet) install 3 new kitchens (surplus warehouse for un-finished oak cabinetry, good deals) and turn the 3200 sq. ft. single residence into 3 apt.s. 1-1300 sq ft 2 bdrm, 1-110 sq ft 2 bedroom, and 1 -800 sq ft 2-story one bedroom.
Next is the garage!!
We should have taken pix of it's orignal state, quite a difference now.
So far, with purchase and our work done (subbed some of it) we are 90k into it. We just got it appraised at 200k.

Do you create your deck bids by the square ft? Or do you do have a more detailed way of determining bids that include materials breakdowns for each deck?

The reason I ask is that during a slow spell a few years back, I had a chance to get some deck jobs. I did some research on what guys were getting , and the per square ft rate seemed like it would be impossible to make money. It just didn't seem like a very profitable venture.

I spend a LOT of time determining the materials I'll need for a deck. Too much, in fact. I hope to get to a point where I can say I charge X amount per foot for a 2000 sq foot cedar deck, but I just don't do enough of them where I have a feel for that yet. I've done 5 deck projects in the past year and wood prices bounce all over the place week to week. It's really hard to do a sqft price unless my markup is really high - which is where I hope to get someday soon. When my quality and design is in high demand, I'll jack up my prices. I do unique things with decks sometimes. I'm traveling to AZ to do ENDelt's project. I'm not making a whole lot of money all things considered, but I'll do a hell of a number on my portfolio. His project is going to kick ass. I have some wild ideas and I expect I'll be billing at least double the next time I take on a similar project.

His project is going to kick ass. I have some wild ideas and I expect I'll be billing at least double the next time I take on a similar project.I've gotten to where I can bid my roofs off straight X per sq prices. I have to keep up on material increases, but it's easy since I'm constantly buying the materials. I also do a lot of new stuff where I let the GC worry about the materials. The thing I like about the new stuff is I have my set customer list that build steady, and they know my prices so I never have to bid anything unless it's something really out of the ordinary.

I'll be interested to hear how Delt's deck goes. Are you planning on having the underside still be weatherproof? How are you going to accomplish it? I'd be glad to offer any suggestions or advice in that department.

It depends on how much beer there is.Are you kidding around, or is that the actual plan? It would probably greatly improve the looks if you ran them through a planer and just reattached them with staggered joints (that one seam down the center is brutal). But I was thinking there was more to it than just the looks (a leak in a closet?).

Wall joints? Shoe moulding? Backsplash? I'm clueless.

Wall joints - the shit up against the baseboard - which is the wood trim next too the wall. They filled them with grout which leaves no room for the floor to move. Your grout and slate will crack in less than 5 years. Promise.

If they had left that joint open, you could have covered it with a shoe moulding or quarter round.

The backsplash is the material atop the counter - it looks interesting. What is it?

Do you have any measurements handy? Slate isn't cheap - especially 12" slate (unless it's synthetic) and the counters look to be granite.

I'm guessing your parents have nearly $20k in it.

Saturday is $37 all you can eat and drink and hopefully live music this year.Sounds good to me. :thumb:

I might even be able to help with the music. I have a buddy that does the acoustic solo thing and he's pretty damn good. He really knows how to work the party crowd (plays at bars around here). He's a Chiefs fan, so he might be willing to travel.

All intentions are to do it all. It will depend on if I come alone, with my wife, or with the guy I share tickets with. My tentative plan is at least Saturday if I can't make Friday.

What is the current arrangement for food on Sat? Are we supposed to bring our own, or is it like a catered/admission thing or what? If you want to talk food, you can send me a pm. I'd be happy to help any way I can. I won't give you my teriyake recipe though. It's from scratch and it's a closely guarded secret. It may die with me. :)

It's a great time....will be cool meeting you.

You knocked down 18 beers last night. I'd say that's a healthy start. I don't think I had 18 beers last night. Course, like I said, I went to work this morning.

Come to think of it we were the last two to crash the morning before the 37 Forever party.

13K actually. They didn't do the bedrooms.

Your parents need to be thrown in jail. They're robbing somebody (assuming that's actually slate). Wainscoting, floors, and granite counters? All for $13k? Nice. I hope they got a backerboard installed as well.

Call me in 5 years and tell me if it was worth the $13k.

I don't know my work schedule (that's why I wasn't there last year) and it's the week of one of my sister's 40th birthday. I've heard she may be putting together a family thing in LA, but I don't know any details yet. She's also SoL if I have to work. :(

But I probably won't be able to say yea or nay before September. It's kind of strange to put faces to names from the board. Raiderhader looks nothing like what I thought he might. And up until the tailgate, I had no idea KS Smitty was a woman!
