Apparently, the NFL would rather its coaches dress more like Bill Belichick and less like Tom Landry.

According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, 49ers coach Mike Nolan recently petitioned the NFL to allow him to wear a suit on the sidelines during games ... and was turned down.
"To me, it's professional. I think it's respectful," Nolan said. "There was certainly no deal, no one came to me, there was nothing to gain. I wasn't trying to put the spotlight on me. But what I was trying to say, there's somebody in charge and this is what they look like."

Not in the NFL they don't. In the NFL, the guy in charge is wearing league-sanctioned team garb. According to Nolan, marketing issues were the reason the NFL denied his request to dress up on Sundays.

Nolan said another reason behind the request was a desire to honor his father, Dick, who worked the 49ers sidelines from 1968-75 in a suit and tie.

"I must say looking at the pictures of my dad — they are all around my office — I thought, 'I'm going to do that,' " Nolan said. "But they are not going to let me."

Dave

Though I look for any excuse to not wear one.

I think it's kinda silly, but this is the same league that wouldn't let Manning wear different shoes for one game to honor Unitas and threw a fit when Plummer wore a 40 on his helmet. The league is very big brother-like in it's demand for uniformity.

well I'm sure that athletic apparel companies pay big money to the NFL and to individual teams. It's a contractual issue for sure

The NFL doesn't sell them.

Did I read that correctly that marketing contracts prevent them from approving his request?

Sounds like the bitch is with those contracts, not with the NFL for living up to those contracts.

I'm sure the NFL would fine you. IIRC, when they were gonna fine Plummer last year the fines doubled each week. Sure, that first 4K or 8K fine is hardly noticeable to a millionaire. But, by week 16, I bet it starts to make a dent.

$32,768,000 by Week 16 if it starts at $1,000. Definite dent.

You make it sound like the apparel companies grabbed the NFL by the throat and made them sign those contracts...

As much as I don't have a problem wit wearing the suit I thnk the anger is misplaced, If you want to be mad at something then it should be the narrow stipulations put in a logo\clothing contract. You can't just break a contract of that nature because you feel like it.

There is also some other stuff how how this player couldn't do this one game or this another. I like that the league is strict with its uniformity. I think it is a small part of what makes the NFL such a great league. If you were to open that door just a little bit then I believe it would open the flood gates for players like Owens and Sapp to go even more out of their way through their dress to make the whole game about them.

Sorry people but i really can't jump in the let him wear a suit band wagon.
Reason being different occupations have different rules of how to dress, not to wear tee shirts, you must wear safty shoes, no surfing the internet, i even worked at a place where you 'had' to give to the Unitied Way.
Knowing this is a rule by the NFL either do what they say or find another job. Pure and simple. If not wearing a suit and tie is that big a deal i say to the guy, "quit dude, and don't let the door hit you on the ass." I've known many people through the years that bitch and bitch about their jobs. I always tell them find another job and quit if its that bad. Usually never happens.

I don't understand how you can act like these sanctions were forced on the NFL in the contract. I'm sure the NFL knew what they were doing.

I am not saying they did not know what they are doing and I don't think anything was forced. But I can't muster up anything to get mad at them because they didn't think of a suit clause.

This kind of contract is uber lucritive im sure....and having a suit was not part of the game. I have no idea if they thought of the whole suit thing or not at the time.

Excuse me but ... I don't watch football to see what the coaching staff's latest fashion statement is. I watch football to see the action ON the field.

In other words ...

WHO GIVES A TINY LITTLE RAT'S ASS!!!???

Our newspaper had a little blip today that said that Nolan is now negotiating with Reebok to wear a suit. We may see that Reebok suit yet.

Its called a company dress code policy. Many companies have them. Deviation from them can bring stiff penalties.

I'd be more sympathetic to the NFL's postition if Nolan was wanting to wear a polo shirt made by someone other than the ones who had paid to the the "official polo shirt of the NFL".

However, last time I heard Brooks Brothers or Joseph H Banks weren't competing against each other to get on the sidelines. . . yet.

I'd agree with you if he was dressing too casual, but i doubt many companies have dress codes where your penalised for being too smart, unless its some kinda safety thing.
