View Full Version : Geography Party Idea

Rain Man
05-13-2005, 09:41 PM
At some point in the future, I want to have a party where we play songs that relate to all 50 states, and people have to match the song with the state. (Yes, it'll be a wild party.)

I need songs for all 50 states. Help me out here, within the following rules.

1. Top choice is a song that actually mentions the state in either the title or the lyrics.

2. Second choice is a song that mentions a major city in the state.

3. Creative entries are good.

4. We can't have anything by a completely obscure artists. As a rule, let's say that the artist needs to have a platinum record or have a song that reached #1 on the charts.

5. Nothing hokey, like state songs.

6. It's not first come, first serve. If you've got a better song than one that's been suggested, offer it up.

Ready? Here's what I've got right now.

Alabama - Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynard

There's some Indigo Girls song that mentions Minnesota. "The Mississipi's mighty, it starts in Minnesota, at a place that you could walk across with five steps down..." What's the title?

Does Paul Simon mention a state in Graceland? I don't think he mentions Tennessee, but I think he mentions driving across Mississippi.

I'd replace Georgia's song with "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band, and it's not the state song.

But that's me... I like that song better than "Georgia On My Mind."

Pennsylvania, Streets of Philadelphia, Bruce Springsteen
Illinios, Sweet Home Chicago, The Blues Brothers

"I remember back in Kansas when we sang this song at night,we sang
Every Step Of The Way."

Yes,and it also mentions Wyoming.

I saw her standin' on her front lawn just twirlin' her baton
Me and her went for a ride sir and ten innocent people died

From the town of Lincoln Nebraska with a sawed off .410 on my lap
Through to the badlands of Wyoming I killed everything in my path

I can't say that I'm sorry for the things that we done
At least for a little while sir me and her we had us some fun

The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death
Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest

Sheriff when the man pulls that switch sir and snaps my poor head back
You make sure my pretty baby is sittin' right there on my lap

They declared me unfit to live said into that great void my soul'd be hurled
They wanted to know why I did what I did
Well sir I guess there's just a meanness in this world

If no other of my choices get selected I beg of you Kevin that Missouri stays at home with The Rainmakers,Downstream.

Well, me and Mark Twain were having us a ball
Telling each other lies, floating down from Hannibal
With a bottle and a worm and a cane pole
We were fishing for secrets where the catfish crawl
And the Mississippi River's flowing downstream
Meet the Gulf of Mexico somewhere downstream
Meet the Atlantic Ocean somewhere downstream
Gonna meet you in the water somewhere downstream
Well, we picked up Harry Truman floating down from Independence
We said "What about the war?", he said "Good riddance"
We said "What about the Bomb, are you sorry that you did it?"
He said "Pass me that bottle, and mind your own business"
And the Mississippi River's flowing downstream
Meet the Gulf of Mexico somewhere downstream
Meet the Atlantic Ocean somewhere downstream
Gonna meet you in the water somewhere downstream
Well, we're rounding St. Louis and heading for the coast
When we pick up Chuck Berry in a little rowboat
With one oar in the water and one in the air
A lightning rod for a white guitar
And lightning struck once, and lightning struck twice
And I said "If there's a God, He sure ain't nice"
And Chuck said "God is an Indian giver
I don't trust nothing but the Mississippi River"
And the Mississippi River's flowing downstream
Meet the Gulf of Mexico somewhere downstream
Meet the Atlantic Ocean somewhere downstream
Gonna meet you in the water somewhere downstream

For Wyoming, this one by John Denver

"This song appears on three albums, and was first released on the Windsong album, and has also been released on the Country Classics and The Country Roads Collection albums."

Well, Im weary and tired, Ive done my days ridin
Nighttime is rollin my way
The skys all on fire and the lights slowly fading
Peaceful and still ends the day
Out on the trail night birds are callin
Singin their wild melody
Down in the canyon cottonwood whispers
A Song of Wyoming for me

Or this one:

Artist/Band: Rogers Roy
Lyrics for Song: Why, oh why, did I ever leave Wyoming
Lyrics for Album: Other songs

Why, oh why, did I ever leave Wyoming?
Why, oh why, did I ever have to go?
Why, oh why, did I ever leave Wyoming?
Cause there's a sherriff back there,
Lookin' for me high and low,
And high and low

My uncle max in Cheyenne swears he's honest as the sun;
He worked six years in a bathhouse, and he never took a one.
The sherrif finally caught him and no more will uncle roam;
They caught him working in a bank and taking samples home. Oh,

(chorus)
Why oh why did I ever leave Wyoming...

Portland, oregon feat
Loretta Lynn

Well, Portland, Oregon and sloe gin fizz
If that ain't love then tell me what is
Well, I lost my heart it didn't take no time
But that ain't all. I lost my mind, in Oregon.

In a booth in the corner with the lights down low
I was movin' in fast, she was takin' it slow
Well, I looked at him and caught him lookin' at me
I knew right then we were playin' free, in Oregon.

Next day we knew last night, got drunk
But we loved enough for the both of us
In the morning when the night had sobered up
It was much too late for the both of us, in Oregon.

Well, sloe gin fizz works mighty fast
When you drink it by the pitcher and not by the glass
Hey bartender, before you close
Pour us one more drink and a pitcher to go.

And a pitcher to go.
And a pitcher to go...
