View Full Version : YES! Ringwald Mulls 'Sixteen Candles' Sequel

LOS ANGELES - Could it be time to put more candles on the cake? Molly Ringwald said she's in discussions to make a sequel to "Sixteen Candles," the 1984 movie about the obstacles and embarrassments a teen girl faces on her birthday.

The film, directed by John Hughes, shot Ringwald to teen stardom, but she hasn't appeared in a major role in many years. She said she's been appearing in theater, small TV and film parts and raising a daughter, now 18 months old.

Ringwald, 37, said she had been approached repeatedly about doing a sequel, but recently read a script that she liked and wanted to star in the movie.

"I've turned it down for years. I couldn't see how it would work," she said. "Now, it seems right."

Ringwald was reunited at the MTV Movie Awards on Saturday with
Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and Paul Gleason, three of her co-stars in 1985's "The Breakfast Club," directed by John Hughes.

Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez didn't show.

"They're in Africa with Dave Chappelle," Hall joked.

Here's my thing on this:

I remember this movie when I was a teen and connected to some of it like many of you. It should be appreciated by anybody who grew up in the 80s, a timeless favorite...HOWEVER,

We all saw her tits already in the post "Sixteen Candles" years, didn't we? After that, who cares anymore... :D

Exactly ... that's what they do in movies now.

If they did a sequel and somehow didn't bring back the players like Anthony Michael Hall, Donger, John Cusak, Jake and his hot girlfriend... the sister and her husband/family... it just wouldn't fly.

Hell, it likely won't fly anyway, but the only chance they have is to bring back a lot of the old characters.

I suppose issues are a possibility.

Age: 39

As I remember correctly, the movie had none of the following:

1. Swords
2. Explosions
3. Bare boobies
4. Car chases
5. Gun fights
6. Horse chases

On the other hand, the movie had plenty of the following:

a. Feelings
b. Relaaaationships
c. Endearing chaaracters
d. Lovable protagonist

It has been forevermore branded a "Chick Flick" in my book.

Since this thread is now hopelessly hijacked, I'll give some love to one of the great unsung teen comedies of the 80's - Better Off Dead. Cusack was great as the loser and Booger was amazing as the druggie friend (Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?).

Oh ... what about One Crazy Summer ... or St Elmo's Fire? Two great flicks... St Elmo's could border on chick flick status, but it's still greatness.

All those movies like Oxford Blues, etc were really good.

One Crazy Summer. Classic 80s film.

Anyone remember Odd Jobs?

Yep. I've never seen so many sport jackets with the collars flipped and sleeves pushed up in my life.

As funny as the lines are, I've always been tickled by the offbeat take of the movie. Particularly how the kids were in rapt attention with the teacher's lecture and actually groaned their dismay when class was over.
And the mom boiling bacon.
And the dad getting an Aardvark coat for X-mas, and the neighbor gettin the same coat!!!

"Lane, it has raisins, you like raisins" (as the dessert slowly saunters off his plate)
"One of them speaks no english at all, the other one speaks Howard Cosell."
"Gee Ricky, I'm sorry your mom blew up."

That movie had two comedy icons in it - Booger and Porky.

Although not quite as good, One Crazy Summer was also a great flick in the same mold as Better Off Dead with Cusack playing the hopeless loser. Bobcat Goldthwaite was at his best in that film.

Truly, a sight to behold. A man, beaten. The once great champ, now a study in moppishness. No longer the victory hungry stallion we've raced so many times before, but a pathetic, washed-up, aged ex-champion.

Of course the ultimate 80s teen angst movie = Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Jeff Spicoli.
Nude Jennifer Jason Leigh AND Phoebe Cates.

Oh hell yes. :D

"Dude, my dad's a TV repair man; he has this ultimate set of tools. We can fix it"

"You can't fix this car Spicoli!"

Since this thread is now hopelessly hijacked, I'll give some love to one of the great unsung teen comedies of the 80's - Better Off Dead. Cusack was great as the loser and Booger was amazing as the druggie friend (Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?).

For fans of Deadwood, the newspaper guy, AW Merrick, played the principal in Bueller.
Better Off Dead is one of my favorites.

This is a great thread. The last 3 1/2 years of my life have been centered around movies from Disney, Pixar and similar. I was fearing I was losing my ability to quote lines from 80s flicks.

Time for a thread dedicated to Fletch, Spies Like Us, Caddyshack, Vacation...
