View Full Version : Surtain gets ran over?

Some beeyatches on another board are saying that Surtain gets "ran over" all the time. Is there any justification to this? Seems to me I've heard nothing but good things about Surtain in the media.

Not to get off track here, but this isn't exactly a prime example of textbook tackling.

He got the job done here, but how many times have we seen DBs get run over when attempting to make these kinds of hits?

I'd say that's the best way for a 180 lb DB to take on a 215 lb tailback.

He got the job done here, but how many times have we seen DBs get run over when attempting to make these kinds of hits?I don't know, he kept his head up and put his shoulderpad right into Tomlinson's hip. I'd be more apt to agree if he'd gone low, say for the ankles. Those are the ones that always bug me, where you see the DB go down, wrap his arms around the RBs lower leg, and the RB just runs through it.

Anyway, we're talking about one tackle. That's not much of a sample. The guy's a consensus top-10 corner who hasn't had less than 50 tackles in a season for 5 years playing on a good defense (so his numbers aren't inflated), I doubt there's much of an issue with ability to bring people down..

Perhaps you'd prefer the Eric Warfield special?

"Here, let me dust off your shoulderpads and point you in the direction of the endzone."

Heh.

Ill take knocking the guy's legs out from under him over that any day of the week.

What PS did in this particular instance was very effective, and he may well be able to do it consistently.
I can't say with any certainty because I don't watch the 'Phins very often.
It is, however, not fundamentally sound.

But like you, I'll take that any day over Hicks SP dusting.

Gochiefs, do you know anything about football? That is what our defense looked like last year. That is why we sucked. Shame be upon you for even trying to defend that kind of tackle. WRAPPING UP is the way to bring people down.

Surtain squaring up and trying to wrap up would probably result in him getting run over. Most Cb's take the legs out when tackling a RB.

No, last year our defense looked like that except that there was no one in position to wrap-up, cut legs, or even smile as the RB turned up field.

The form on that tackle is outstanding. This is the sort of tackle that only works when the runner does not see the defender. 9 out of 10 times, LT would have made Surtain look silly, Barry Sanders style. This run was designed to go inside, and LT had to bounce it outside. Not wrapping up on tackles = trouble more often than not. See how he ducked his head, looked like he was afraid of contact. Can't wait to see LJ plow this guy.

Sidewinder is right, Surtain should have used his arms to wrap up. The first time a running back bounces out of one of those shoulder tackels, this whole board will be pissing themselves in anger. Shawn Barber's game tapes are proof of what happens when you don't use your arms when tackling.

I don't know if that's how Surtain normally tackles, so I'm not making anything of it, but that tackle was fundamentally poor.

I think some folks are whining over nothing. That tackle reminds me of Dale Carter. And sure, Carter got beaten every once in awhile. However, when he was in his prime with the Chiefs (mid 1990s), He was considered one of the top 2 CBs in the NFL, Deon Sanders being the other. But it was the general opinion that Deon didn't like to tackle while Dale was good at it. I'll take that anyday.

I can't wait to see your Pee Wee football defense try to stop Priest Holmes.

I'm sure Charles Woodson would have squared up and taken him out, right Larry?

And for the record, Surtian has a reputation as a solid tackler for a corner.

I could picture Warfield, he woulda probably ran alongside with LT, closed the angle towards the sidelines, and push him outta bounds. Warfield is too much of a pu**y to knock a guys legs out.

I'm just pointing out that GoChiefs "exhibit A" is a demonstration of poor technique.

I am not saying that Surtain is not a sure tackler.

I am commenting on this one example presented in the thread only.
