The 12th Annual Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards Banquet was held June 13 at the Tulsa Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center. The black tie event was packed with sports enthusiasts and others interested in the charitable evening.
The 2005 Emcee was former professional football great Lynn Swann, the Keynote Speaker was Sports Illustrated writer Steve Rushin, and the Honorees were golfer Amy Alcott and Kansas City Chiefs lineman Will Shields. The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards are given in recognition of America’s premiere athletes who have excelled in their sport and have shown by their actions a desire to help others. Their outstanding personal involvement and success in their chosen work have made them heroes in the eyes of the world.
Henry Iba was an unparalleled success as a coach, a leader and a citizen. The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards were created to recognize and honor one female and one male athlete who best exemplify the high degree of citizenship in the image of Henry P. Iba.
Swan, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was born in Alcoa, Tennessee in 1952. He was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first round draft pick as a wide receiver in 1974. He caught the game-winning touchdown in the AFC Championship as a rookie, and was Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl X in 1976 and played in three Pro Bowls.
At the time of his retirement from pro football, he was named to the All-NFL Team of the 1970s, held five Super Bowl records, including career receptions, career receiving yards, career touchdown receptions, yards in a game, and the highest punt return average in a game. In 1991 he was named to the NFL’s Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Team.
At age 8 Amy Alcott would push golf balls into sprinkler heads in their lawn. At age 9 she was convinced that she wanted to be a golfer.
She has now played for 30 years in the LPGA and has won 32 titles worldwide including five majors including the U.S. Open and 3 Dinah Shores. She was admitted to the LPGA Hall of Fame in 1999.
Steve Rushin joined Sports Illustrated as a reporter in 1988 after graduating from Marquette University. Three years later, he became the magazine’s youngest Senior Writer. He is a four-time finalist for the National Magazine Award and his work has appeared in The Best American Magazine Writing, The Best American Travel Writing and The Best American Sports Writing anthologies. Since 1998, he has written a weekly column for SI called “Air and Space,” which was a finalist for the National Magazine Award in 2004.
A native of Bloomington, Minnesota, Rushin now lives in Connecticut his wife, Rebecca Lobo.
Will Shields was an All-State choice at Lawton High School and then attended Nebraska.
With the Kansas city Chiefs, he has started 191 consecutive games dating back to a contest at Houston in 1993, the longest streak in team history since 1968. He owns the second-longest starting streak among active NFL players behind QB Brett Favre. He was selected to his 10th Pro Bowl in 2004, the most in Chiefs’ history. He earned second-team All-Pro honors from the AP.
He is a ten-time Pro Bowler in his twelve years in the NFL.
Off the field, Will is an amazing humanitarian. He and his wife, Senia have been recognized nationally for their community service. Together with the help of their three children, they run all foundation activities with no paid staff.
