I know im not a fan of Kawika, but this rose to my attention right here and thought it was worthy for discussion.

Keith Bullucks stats :
2000 Tennessee Titans 16 33 25.0 8 0 1 8 8.0 8 1 0
2001 Tennessee Titans 15 51 30.0 21 1 2 21 10.5 21 0 3
2002 Tennessee Titans 16 125 99.0 26 1 1 5 5.0 5 0 6

Kawika Mitchell stats :

2003 Kansas City Chiefs 12 21 17.0 4 0 1 3 3.0 3 0 0
2004 Kansas City Chiefs 15 72 58.0 14 1 0 0 0.0 0 0 3

The point im makin is lookin at the comparisons of there 2nd year, i know Gun might of still been in KC in 2000 but in 2001 in his first year under Gun Bulluck only had 51 tackles.

Now the other thing i pointed out is look at Mitchells, it look as if Gun has a pretty good effect on LB's cause in Mitchells 2nd year and first playing for Gun he put up better numbers then Bulluck did in his 2nd year.

Could we quite possibly see another repeat here ? Could Gun turn Mitchell into a pretty good player as he did Bulluck.

I don't know enough about Bullock or his early career in Tennessee to predict either way based on that. But I do think/have thought there's a chance with Mitchell. This would certainly be the best situation for it, with a former all pro now playing on his right, a first round pick on his left and a couple of all pro DBs added behind him, in addition to his second year away from Robinson/with Cunningham. And I say "away from Robinson/with Cunningham" because a part of me thinks one is perhaps as important as the other.

There's one thing I will say about the Gunthinator...he always coudl turn chicken shit into chicken salad when it came to LB's.

royr17,

I've been thinking the same thing and am really interested in how out LBs play this year. I'm expecting vast improvement from all of them, not just the ones that are new this year.

I'll go on record as saying I like Mitchells potential. I think he could be a star.

If the record is any indication, along with Gun working with Mitchell in the off season then I'd say that there's a good chance Mitchell could be a good player. Let's all hope so!

I sure as hell hope so!! If Gun can mold Kawika into that level of player, we'll kick some a$$ this year!

Not everyone is going to be a top FA or first round draft pick. I'm fine with Giving Mitchell a shot, at least this year if he goes to shit Bell could go to MLB.

If you watched him in the first few games last year, then skipped to the last few games....You would think we got a new LB.
The transformation had begun and I hope it continues.

I'd settle for Gun making him into a good LB. Solid players at all D positions is what we should be striving for. Surtain/Knight/Bell already are above solid level.

If he could mold Kawika into a football player just think of what kind've freak he'll be able to mold Scanlon into. :)

I know college FB is only college, but didn't Mitchell win a Butkis award?

I heard good things about Mitchell coming out of college and then it seemed as though everybody jumped of the bandwagon when he didn't play well his first couple of years. now this is his year to prove what he do. no excuses this year. i can't wait to see what he does with opportunity

I saw dramatic improvement late last year.

I love to parade these stats out. He had 29 tackles and two sacks the last three games of last season.

Sorry guys, i just dont see anything in him so far. He looked like a little wuss in that Patroits game last year. Ive never seen such pathetic attempts at making a tackle.

Using that game as your example does little to discredit the arguments seen here -- that Kawika was playing well in the last few games -- because the Patriots game was in Week 11.

I said this before and will say it again. He did look better his last 4 games, we can only hope improvement continues with him, if not move on to the next in line.

The MLB job is Kawika's to keep or lose ...... It's Time to Shine or Ride the Pine.

Couldn't have said it better myself

I also saw improvement at the end of last season. Unfortunately, it was very late last season. If Mitchell [with Gunther’s help] can build on that, I think he can be an adequate MLB.

Of course, I have a soft spot in my heart for Boomer and hope he makes it at MLB down the road. But I believe that Mitchell is currently our best bet at MLB.

Cautiously optimistic.

Gun doesn't have a history of building stars at the LB spot, but they are generally very solid. If we can solidify the linebacking, that will be a great piece of the puzzle to revamp our D.

Exactly. Gunther got solid production out of guys with names like Simien, Dumas, Simmons, and McDaniels. No, they weren't "stars" but how many Ray Lewis types play for the league's best LB corps in New England?

Exactly.
