Ambrose Signs a One-Year Contract with Chiefs

On Friday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs signed 13-year veteran cornerback Ashley Ambrose to a one-year contract. The veteran cornerback played the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints and he’s expected to battle Dexter McCleon for the nickel spot on this roster.

Though it was not a surprise that the Kansas City Chiefs signed Ashley Ambrose, he's not Ty Law. Ambrose who has spent 13 NFL seasons playing for a host of teams including the Saints twice, Colts, Bengals and Falcons, is good insurance to soften the blow of losing Julian Battle for the season last month.

Battle had surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles Heal and will miss the entire 2005 season. The Chiefs are still waiting word from the NFL office about the suspension to veteran cornerback Eric Warfield. We've heard that the NFL is considering a lesser suspension of two games instead of the four game suspensiion that most fear will be imposed on Warfield. To his credit, Warfield has met all the guidelines imposed with his plea bargain arrangement in with prosecutors in Johnson County, Kansas.

But that does not mean the NFL will reduce the anticiapted four game suspension for the Chiefs starting cornerback but at least they are looking at lowering it two a pair of games and that would be good news for the Chiefs.

Ambrose has started 141 games in his NFL career and picked off 42 passes. He managed to grab three in each his last two seasons in New Orleans and that’s the kind of production the Kansas City hope he can match this season with the Chiefs.

The signing of Ambrose might signal the end of talks with representatives for free agent cornerback Ty Law. But Warpaint Illustrated has learned that the Chiefs still have an interest in Law. Stay tuned for more details on that topic later today.

Law Still an Option for Chiefs

Shortly after agreeing to a one-year contract with veteran cornerback Ashley Ambrose on Friday afternoon, it appeared that the Kansas City Chiefs would end their flirtation with Ty Law. Well that might not be the case.

When Kansas City officially made the announcement that they had come to terms with 13-year veteran cornerback Ashley Ambrose earlier in the day on a one-year contract, many thought that this signing would signal the end of their pursuit of cornerback Ty Law. Well, that’s not the case according to our source.

Warpaint Illustrated has confirmed that the Kansas City Chiefs still have a strong desire to bring in the veteran cornerback for a visit before training camp. According to a league source, Law is still a couple of weeks away from being able to take a physical.

Last week he worked out in Jacksonville in front of the Jaguars coaching staff but they were not impressed enough to make him a concrete offer. In fact, the workout was not extensive and observers indicated that it was more of a walk-through. His appearance on the field did nothing to accurately test his readiness to practice at full speed; yet alone start the season at 100%.

Law who made claims earlier in the week that the Chiefs had made him a $40 million dollar contract offer were not accurate according to our source. The offer that Law was referring to came from his agent Carl Poston and not the Chiefs. Poston told the Chiefs if they agreed to that price; that would seal the deal for Law’s services. Obviously the Chiefs rejected the offer and instead made the trade for Patrick Surtain.

At the crux Ambrose and Law news, it appears that Kansas City is still looking to make even more changes in their defensive secondary. Surtain is the only lock at cornerback as the Chiefs still awaiting news from the NFL on Eric Warfield’s pending suspension for his off the field incident last year. Warfield could be suspended anywhere from a pair of games to as many as four games. The hitch appears to be how many of his off the field incidents will be counted as strikes by the NFL.

Still we’re told that even if Warfield is available to start the season and the Chiefs do indeed sign Ty Law that Warfield would move to a back-up spot. He’d become the teams first nickel back off the bench and that means Ambrose and veteran Dexter McCleon will fight it out for a roster spot.

I would think Ambrose would have the advantage in this situation because of his play-making abilities plus the fact he’s 100% healthy. Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Dick Vermeil has made it very clear that he’s not happy that McCleon who had surgery to repair his shoulder in the off-season. McCleon used doctors outside of the arms reach of the Chiefs medical doctors and McCleon did not participate in any of the OTA or Mini-Camp sessions.

McCleon has struggled to say the least the last season and a half in Kansas City and it would appear by keeping him they might lose out on fifth round draft pick Alphonso Hodge and rookie standout Justin Perkins. Both have shown great promise in the teams’ workouts and are the type of players the Chiefs would be foolish not to develop. With four veterans ahead of them each could spend a year learning from some of the very best to play the game. Hodge reminds me a lot of Kevin Ross and Perkins appears to have some of the same physical skills to those of Chiefs great James Hasty.

As for Law, he is still the most imposing free agent left on the market and it’s interesting to see the Chiefs continue their pursuits of the former New England Patriot standout. Law, if healthy, would be the final piece to the Chiefs defensive puzzle. By signing Law and moving Warfield to the inside to cover slot receivers, not many NFL teams on the Chiefs 2005 schedule are going to have success passing the ball against the Chiefs defense; especially when you factor in the abilities of their starting safeties; Sammy Knight and Greg Wesley.

Either way you have to give credit to the Chiefs for trying to improve their team before they head to River Falls four weeks from now. The fact they are still players in the Ty Law sweepstakes despite signing Ambrose on Friday; means they are convinced they have a shot a legitimate shot at signing him. Based on the wheeling and dealing they’ve done this off-season; nobody can argue with their chances of landing the three time Super Bowl champion cornerback.
