I know, I know, Soccer is for pussies blah, blah, blah... I am proud to say that I am a passionate fan for the game (especially Argentina/ Boca Juniors).

I wanted to see how many planeteers cared about soccer, yourr predictions in the upcoming World Cup (which is less than 12 months away). I will probably be going to cheer on my beloved,

Anyway, please chose your top 3 teams that are the most likely to play the finals and why - (i know the groups arent set yet for Germany and it is way to early to predict but this is a draft until the actual teams qualify and are grouped)

My top 3 in order:

Germany - Home
Brazil - Incredibe team (they own us)
Argentina (My Country / Only team from S.A. to have already qualified - by beating Brazil 3-1 I might add)

Here are my 3 though

Germany for sure. Unless Ballack goes down. I love the game as well. I picked Argentina to win it all in 2002 (you know, when they had the good squad) and was disappointed and pissed, never will pick them again.

I always root for Netherlands, but they are major choke artists, this year I will (hopefully) finally have the opportunity to cheer for the Ukrainian team.

Dude Argentina in 2002 had an OK squad... Their current team is better, yes, they were picked to win it all in 2002, but then they got in the hardest group (F). They ended up 1-1-1 only losing to England on a penalty shot and did not move on... That was crap.

By the way....in a related story....did you see in the latest FIFA rankings the US national team has moved up to #6 in the country? We're looking very good with Donovan, Beasley, and company. Our goalkeeping is solid, but I'm a bit concerned about our back line.

But should be a fun world cup....by the way, hopefully USA and Mexico will match up next week in the finals of the Gold cup. The semi match is tonight....which bring up even another topic. My friend and I consider ourselves pretty avid US soccer fans. But here's what has us ticked....the Gold cup happens approximately once a year. Pretty big event actually for soccer. But we cant get any of the games televised by an American broadcasting company. No ESPN, no fox sports, no ESPN2....nothing. I've had to hunt down sports bars that have Telefutura (a Telemundo network) to try to catch the games. Most cable companies (even here in So-Cal) dont have this channel.

And the US soccer organizations ask themselves why soccer isnt bigger in the USA or why the support isnt as big as they think it should be.....well, not televising you're national team in a yearly tournament is a something you might want to look into!

Alright...rant over.

CONCACAF sold all-language rights to the people who run Telefutura, and the costs would outweigh the benefits for ESPN or FSC to buy them.

Sucks, but it's just the Gold Cup. Nobody sends their A teams, nobody really cares too much. Doing well helps you in the rankings, but it's not a big deal.

The NFL doesn't play matches; they are called 'games'. The fact that you would rather watch 90 minutes of little soccer guys running up and down and up and down without scoring a SINGLE goal than watch a Pittsburgh-Indianapolis game or a Packers-Vikings shootout just blows me away.
For the life of me I can't understand how anyone can sit and watch soccer. It's like one long special teams play over and over and over again except no one gets tackled.

WTF is the difference, match = game. Except game is used more often by kids when they go play in the school yard. Just because you don't understand how the game is played, doesn't mean it sucks. I heard a foreign dude bitch about Baseball once, saying that people cheer for no reason and nothing ever happens except for the rare homeruns. Most everyone? What do you mean by that? What defines the "excitement" in sports? For me it's the incredible skill and teamwork displayed by the individuals in order to achieve a goal (score). Football is the ultimate in teamwork (that's whay I love it), the skills though only really show when a quaterback throws an extremelly accurate pass (not saying it takes no skills to play footabll, this is relative). Yes, a good play by a reciever or a CB is also awesome to behold, it's still not as skillsful as some of the stuff we see in soccer, though. Soccer, though, has much more individual skills and much more improvisation by the team, you never know what's going to happen, and when something special happens, it's that much better (in football you have a #of options you can exploit any given play, soccer - unlimited flow of genius). If it's violence we are judging the game by, your favorite game should then be Australlian Football.

Add national pride to the mix of teamwork and individual skill and you have your perfect sport - soccer.

I'd take the odds for a premiere soccer player into the NFL [except for linemen, but especially at WR, RB, QB] over an NFL player anywhere on a premiere soccer pitch.
Much like hitting a MLB fastball or manning a MLB infield, there's a foundation of athleticism with a healthy dose of specialized SKILLS.

Also, I note that they have taken to putting GPS on the midfielders for the women's nat'l team. They log 7.5+ miles in 90 minutes.

IMHO is no way a soccer player could walk into an NFL skill position without ever having played. Only 1% of college studs get into the league. The game is so fast, so furious, and so vicious that unless you have been preparing for it you would not be able to pick up the offense, make your body football smart, etc.

Soccer is all about endurance; most NFL players could not run for an entire soccer game due to the danger of dying form sheer boredom and lack of action (sorry, couldn't help it). The pro athletes that would probably come closest to being able to run up and down and up and down and up and down etc. etc. etc. would be NBA players.

I have no doubt that they'd get bored, because they'd never get anywhere near a position to make a difference.
Both sports take speed and skill, but in football, you run with your feet and handle the ball with your hands. People are used to that dynamic. People aren't used to manipulating objects with their feet or foreheads. The aspects of speed and scheme aside, the skill of cradling a football in your arms, or catching one on the fly are far less foreign to the average soocer player than competent dribbling, passing and shooting are to the average football player.

And from personal experience. I played soccer almost exclusively from age 7-8 on, and being from the suburbs, there are a number of the same kids year after year and you get to know them well. And some of my best friends in soccer [with sponsored travelling teams by this time] dropped out to play football come 9th grade [we didn't have a HS soccer team yet]. Those friends went on to start for, and eventually captain a piss poor team and turn it semi-respectable [back to back years at 0-10 before they got there, .500 or slightly above by their Sr. years]. One was starting MLB. Another couple were starting WRs. One returned 3 consecutive punts for a TD one homecoming game.

I knew them growing up. I knew they played soccer winter [indoor] spring and fall. I know they never talked of football until HS. And I know they turned out to be stars on the FB team in short order without much of a change in demeanor or body composition.

I also know one of them [reported by his dad when I ran into him at the grocery store], went on to play semi-pro soccer out on the coast in that league Rod Stewart ginned up in the early 90s.

If America has a "national team" (is that what the Olympic soccer team is?) I don't think many people would give a crap if they won or lost.

If you like soccer great but please don't call me ignorant because I don't care for it, because I find it boring, or because I simply don't attach any national significance to it whatsoever.
It might seem sacreligious to you but I , and most Americans, don't care whether our 'national team' wins or loses or ties 0-0. I wouldn't care if the US didn't have a team in fact I wouldn't notice. I don't know or care how often or where the World Cup is played.

Maybe I can add something to this.......

I grew up thinking the same things many posters have said about soccer today. Pansies (faking of injuries still ticks me off), boring, etc....

But that all changed when I started playing the game (when I was about 25 or so). For those who think it's for pansies....I played over 10 years of football (past High school) and never broke a bone until I played soccer (twice).

It's really tough to compare the two sports though. Different types of athletes, but I will say that in no way is soccer just "endurance". There's a lot of foot-eye coordination that is a very hard skill to become an expert at (much like hitting a baseball or curveball).

There's a lot of things going on away from the ball during a soccer game. There's set plays (much the same as basketball or football). It IS physical. And what the stars do with the ball (speed, bending, passing 40 or 50 yards exactly where they wanted it to go to, etc. is amazing.

BUT....and not to start another argument....I still say that NFL players have the best combination of physical, speed, toughness, endurance, etc. skills of any professional sport. (I still have an argument with my friend that NFL players are "tougher" than NHL...but that's another story). When a 6'6" 250lb man can run a 4.5 40 yd dash, cut, turn, and level a 6'2", 260lb running back....or get his pinky broken....get it cut off and return to the game....nuff said.

This is really apples to oranges though.

Both are fun to watch sports, but I'd miss my honeymoon for a chiefs game.....probably not for the US National soccer team (but I still enjoy both)

Metro... You really think the Ukraine can do something on the international level vs WC talent?

vs.

Turkey
Greece
Denmark
Albania
Georgia
Kazakhstan

They have only played (in my eyes) -
3 ok teams

Turkey 3-0 /
Greece 1-1 / 1-0
Denmark 1-1 / 1-0

The other thing you have to realize is that even though some teams went far in 2002, you have to throw that out the window and have to use what they have done lately....

Ukraine might have a good team, but put them in a groups 1, 4, 6, 7, 8 of the Euro Qualifying and they dont make it to the WC this year....

There's a lot of things going on away from the ball during a soccer game. There's set plays (much the same as basketball or football). It IS physical. And what the stars do with the ball (speed, bending, passing 40 or 50 yards exactly where they wanted it to go to, etc. is amazing.
My most prized skill remains to this day is the ability to bend a corner kick INTO the goal mouth direct. Not the most useful skill past age 10 or so, as any competent goalie is gonna stop me [and any competent ref knows that a corner is, by rule, an indirect kick]. But it remains my solace that I was 'bending it like Beckham' when Beckham was in diapers.

Second most prized is my ability to state that I've NEVER missed a penalty kick. Not in practice, not in a game, not in overtime, NEVER.

But then, with the tactical and logistical advantage, it blows my mind that any competent player ever misses a penalty kick. It's like shooting free throws with a basket the size of a manhole cover.

I'll be d@mned. You are right. Not sure if we were applying FIFA rules, or some form modified for the league I was reffing, in the late 80s, or if the rules have changed since then but I distinctly recall learning that a corner was considered an indirect kick for my certification, because I thought 'hmmm, I guess all those goals I scored way back when shouldn't have counted.'

Thats what I meant... the only Rugby I watch is when the Pumas play (our National team). I have one of their authentics shirts, I where it as proudly as my Boca, National Soccer, National Basketball, and Chiefs jerseys...

Pumas are on the way up, World cup after next there might even be more than 5 teams capable of winning it.

Huh, when did I say anything like that? I've said in numerous threads that I don't think Ukraine will do shit once they qualify. I can play both sides though, Greece won the Euro last year and Turkey finished 3rd in 2002, Argentina on the other hand...

I thought you said they would do well...??? Nevermind...

As I said Greece and Turkey are OK teams...

Once again you cant go off 2002 (4 years ago), they have a different team.... and to tell you the truth, they had the easiest path to number #3 I have ever seen in my WC days:

29-JUN-02 DAEGU (Korea Republic) Korea Republic vs. Turkey 2:3 (1:3)
26-JUN-02 SAITAMA (Japan) Brazil vs. Turkey 1:0 (0:0)
22-JUN-02 OSAKA (Japan) Senegal vs. Turkey 0:1 a.e.t (0:0, 0:0)
18-JUN-02 MIYAGI (Japan) Japan vs. Turkey 0:1 (0:1)
13-JUN-02 SEOUL (Korea Republic) Turkey vs. China PR 3:0 (2:0)
09-JUN-02 INCHEON (Korea Republic) Costa Rica vs. Turkey 1:1 (0:0)
03-JUN-02 ULSAN (Korea Republic) Brazil vs. Turkey 2:1 (0:1)

The only team they played was Brazil and they lost twice to them???? I understand Brazil won it all, but they played no one in the top 25 in the world to get there... :hmmm:

Also, Greece resume after the Euro win in 2004 is so bad... no wins in A matches not including their sorry EURO qualifying group...

22-JUN-05 FRANKFURT/MAIN (Germany) Greece vs. Mexico 0:0
19-JUN-05 FRANKFURT/MAIN (Germany) Greece vs. Japan 0:1 (0:0)
16-JUN-05 LEIPZIG (Germany) Brazil vs. Greece 3:0 (1:0)
18-AUG-04 PRAGUE (Czech Republic) Czech Republic vs. Greece 0:0

Uhhh... and Argentina is currently 2nd in the world, not sure why you are comparing them to the 2002 team that was good (1-1-1 in the hardest group of the WC) to our 2005 team that is 10 times better... so You can say what you will about the last WC, but if you compare the teams that one and the other had to play Argentina has had a Hard path...

Embarrassed their country in 2002.

At the time yes, but after you look at who they had to play for their first three games you can understand why they had a hard time qualifying... We only lost to England 1-0 on a Beckham penalty kick...

1 National Team Sweden 3 1 2 0 4 3 1 5
2 National Team England 3 1 2 0 2 1 1 5
3 National Team Argentina 3 1 1 1 2 2 0 4
4 National Team Nigeria 3 0 1 2 1 3 -2 1

Sweden was a great team, England had Beckham and Owen, Nigeria was the current African Champion...

Also, it's funny how you bring up rankings right after saying the ranking process sucks. Argentina is definately up there, but it's not very hard to get #2 when you play people like Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela with the type of soccer players Argentina produces.

Im not taking it personal... and yes we have the top 5% talent ever year... we produce the best soccer players in the world on a consistent basis....

But when you play England (also has top 5% talent), Sweden (top 10% talent) and Nigeria (fastest mf's I have ver seen) in your first group it is very hard to win all 3, no one did that in that group... there where more ties than wins/losses...

Rankings due suck, but Argentina is a clear #2 in the world behind Brazil at this point, let me elaborate:

FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 - USA not qualified (2004 National Champions around the world on the international scale):
8 teams

Argentina ends up in the Finals vs Brazil - #2 place finish

World Youth Championship 2005 - (USA loses in round of 16) 32 Teams

Argentina ends up in #1 place

Copa America 2004 (USA did not Qualify) - 12 teams

Argentina ends up in the Finals vs Brazil. Lose on Penalties - #2 Place

Olympics 2004 (USA did not Qualify) - 16 teams

Argentina ends up #1 with 0 goals allowed throughout the whole tourney...

In the last 2 years Argentina has ended in #1 or #2 in the last 4 tournaments that include teams other than just S. America, where they play #1 quality opponents around the world. This is not counting the qualifiers where Argentina has already qualified for 2006 by beating Brazil in their last game...

Im not sure how USA merits a #6 placing, that is my argument about the ratings... they are flawed, but there is enough evidence to show that Argentina deserves the #2 spot and Brazil the number #1, everything below that I cant explain why they are ranked so high or so low...

World Youth Championship 2005 - (USA loses in round of 16) 32 Teams

Argentina ends up in #1 placeThe US beat Argentina and won the Group of Death without conceding a goal. One very bad game full of terrible luck against Italy in the knockout round does not erase that. Besides, these are U-20 teams, not full national sides. This has no bearing on this argument

Copa America 2004 (USA did not Qualify) - 12 teams That's like saying Argentina sucks because they "did not qualify" for the Gold Cup, or AC Milan sucks because they "did not qualify" for Copa Libertadores.

Olympics 2004 (USA did not Qualify) - 16 teamsWe didn't qualify because the retarded qualification system meant our U-23s had to go to Azteca and win in order to do so. Again, U-23s... Iraq is not a world power because of their good showing in Greece, and lots of quality soccer nations didn't make the Olympics.

Your post makes total sense; of course you can dislike a team while respecting the country. My comment did not come from anything you said but rather my own feelings. Five seconds before I made that post I had been on MSNBC reading about the subway drivers who are now afraid to do their jobs.
I probably had no right/reason to make that statement here anyway; it borders on political.
Again, nothing you said in any way reflects that you don't support the people of England.

I thought the US can participate in Copa America, Mexico and Costa Rica qualified...??? I might be wrong but I think they can... Not sure why Colombia played in the Gold Cup this year??? Not sure how they qualified... were they invited...??? They did nothing that I know of to merit such...

It looks like Metro finally figured out how to quit taking the bait so I guess I'll dismiss myself a little early today and head on out into the Phoenix sun. Have a good weekend all.

I love when people resort to this once they realize they got owned. Reminds me of c4me and Kotter (the old version).

OK Psi, so tell me who has the US played to merit a #6 position in the world... when they no one (except Mexico) there is a reason only 3.5 teams come out of the CONCAF (out of 34 participants) and 4.5 teams come out of South America (out of 10 Participants)

Who has Argentina played to merit #2? This argument is silly, let's stop while we are ahead.

I never said we deserved the #6 spot (somewhere in the 10-ish range would be much more appropriate, IMHO), but your reasoning for why Argentina deserves #2 and the US doesn't deserve #6 was flawed, at best.

This poll is worthless without a "Gaz" option. Not to mention an option to vote that the sport is a pussified sport.

As well as the option to vote that BigRedChief is so insecure in his "masculinity" that he feels the need to prove how big and bad he is by badmouthing a sport on an internet forum.

Argentina played in the last 5 months:

Brazil (2) 1 win, 1 loss
Germany (2) both times in Germany - 2 ties
Mexico (2) 1 win, 1 tie

Thats 4 games vs TOP 5 talent in the last 5 months... going 2-1-1 only losing to #1.

And coming in 2nd @ the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 where the champions from the regions compete...

But you are right this is silly... :harumph:

I love talking soccer with you guys though... you guys follow it well...

Point taken, I still dont think US deserves a TOP 10 spot... TOP 15 yes... TOP 10 hmm not so sure..

Gotta run, but it was nice PSI, you made good points on my crap...
