Looking at purchasing a 2002 Tundra with the V8 and access cab. The price is right, but I'm wanting to ensure that the V8 has the same reliability and bulletproofness as the venerable V6 that Toyota is famous for. Anyone heard anything bad about this truck and its engine?

The 8 is rock solid. It's the same V8 that Toyota uses for all 4.7L V8 applications. Don't worry about what some call a lack of horsepower, it's still got 320 ft/lbs of torque in a range that you can actually use.

BTW it's also used in all the Lexus 4.7L V8 apps
Here's what uses the 4.7:

4Runner, Tundra, Sequoia Land Cruiser, GX470and LX470

Not to hijack your thread but: I just bought me a new truck this week. A Tundra was one model I considered as well as Ford F150 and GMC Sierra. I even looked at those Nissan Titans but I didn't want to go over 5 liters on engine size due to the gas prices and the forecast of them going higher. I ended up finding the truck that was calling my name. A 2003 F150 flareside that is bright and shiny Chiefs red. It is a 4.6 liter V8 Triton and I think it's got plenty of power. :) You should be alright with the 4.7 liter V8. ;)

The only bad thing I've heard about the Tundra is that it rides like sh*t with a load in the bed. If you aren't using it for anything heavy duty, I think they are good trucks.
