I figured Washington would never release Gardner. They waited it out, and got something for him.

This is what KC should have done with Johnnie Morton.

Gardner is still a young guy with potential.
Morton is already on the downside in his career.

The right situation for Gardner might tap into his potential.
There's no upside for Morton, so why spend anything to get him?

This is what KC should have done with Johnnie Morton.Yeah, teams around the league were clamoring for Morton. That's why San Fransico had to pay out the nose, and give him the vet minimum for two years.

an unconditional draft pick.

Wouldn't that be a "conditional" draft pick?

Without the trade, Washington would have released Gardner, a former first-round choice (2001), but a player who no longer fit into coach Joe Gibbs' plans. The draft choice that the Redskins will receive, presumably in 2006, was not immediately known.

Great move for the Panthers. They're having a nice offseason. Gardner will be a solid #3 for them.

Morton signed pretty damned quick with San Fran.

I'm just saying...

I'm just saying...If a couple days short of 3 weeks qualifies as "pretty damned quick" to you, who am I to argue.
