Just heard on the radio, press conference coming this afternoon. Barry Alvarez, head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers football team is going to step down after this season to concentrate on his duties as Athletic Director for the school.

Look for Iowa State's Dan McCarney to be a leading candidate for the job next year (just my opinion, not part of the story).

How about Brett Bielema?

Edit: Was this expected at all?

Barry has already hand-picked his Defensive Coordinator for the Wisconsin HC job.

Congrats on a great HC career Barry, you did Hayden Fry proud.

Defensive Coordinator=Brett Bielema.

Bielema is a genious. In 02/03 KSU had one of the best defenses in the nation. Good luck BB.

McCarney sucks, I hate that guy....

But what do I know I'm a hawkeye fan.

I can't stand Iowa State fans thinking they will beat the Hawks this year...

Barry Alvarez will hand the Wisconsin coaching job to Bret Bielema after this season and focus on running the school's athletics department.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported the coaching move, which sources confirmed to ESPN.com's Pat Forde.

Alvarez is in his 16th season as the school's football coach and has also been serving as the athletic director since last year.

Bielema, who is 35, is in his second season as the team's defensive coordinator. He previously was the co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State.

Alvarez is 108-70-4 at Wisconsin with three Rose Bowl victories and seven other bowl appearances.

Sorry Saul should have read your post. I was listening to an interview with the Ohio State football announcer this morning. Real knowledgeable guy, said Barry picked Bielema as HC and since Barry is not only the outgoing coach but he is also AD that pick is pretty much final.

Wisconsin has brought a badass D to the table every year; we'll see how thenew HC handles the offensive side.

Imagine the melt down if they do. Course Iowa St. is usually the destination of all the Nebraska kids who don't get offered a free ride at Nebraska.

Oh but it makes it that much sweeter to see their dejected little faces as they realize they suck hind tit for another year and still have to live in Ames. (j/k Ames is alright I've partied there till I fell down the Hill)

When I was living in Chicago, we were driving back with the kids to KC to see my folks. My son had to pee, so we stopped in Iowa City. I was very surprised at how nice of a town it was - great college town. We kicked around toward the campus. Cool place. I'd love to go to a game at Kinnick some day.

God forbid that they actually go to a school that will give them a solid education.

I'm glad your impression of IC was positive. IMHO you can't find a nicer place to be a student or raise a family anywhere.
If you came for a football game you would have a great time; well-meaning visitors like yourself are always treated with respect. Bring the family, come a couple of hours before game time, eat and drink on Market street. You can usually scalp some tickets. Oh, and since about 1/4 of Iowa students are from Illinois you won't feel lonely!

The ONLY successful Division 1 football powerhouse that can say ANYTHING about their academic standards is Notre Dame.

And they suck now.

that's rather unexpected, guess I heard no rumors. I remember when he was a HS coach and was brought aboard to bring in one of his runners to Iowa. Unfortunately, the kid had a hidden neck problem and had to convert from RB. He had a decent career after.
