RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The wait continues for Mike Maslowski.

Hours after he participated in a workout for medical clearance, Maslowski was not on the practice field Friday morning as the Chiefs started their second day of training camp.

“Patience,” coach Dick Vermeil told his linebacker, who has been out for 1½ seasons with a knee injury. “He’s starting to play again after coming off an operation that no NFL player has ever had before, so we’ll learn as he will learn.”

That same workout, conducted Thursday night, did produce good news for three other Chiefs. Linebacker Scott Fujita and receivers Marc Boerigter and Chris Horn returned to practice after missing offseason workouts and minicamp.

Vermeil said Boerigter, who’s also coming off a knee injury, will start off with one hard practice a day, then will be monitored in two-a-days.

Maslowski’s future is less certain. Vermeil said he was held out because he wasn’t “quite 100 percent there.” He’s battling three players for a spot at middle linebacker, including Kawika Mitchell, who has earned kudos from the coaches for his offseason strides.

“I think he controls the timetable,” Vermeil said of Maslowski. “It’s really early in camp; we’ve got a long ways to go and four preseason games to play. We just want to do things right for Maz.”
