My cousin "obtained" a beta of the soon-to-be-released OS from Windows. I dunno if it was a bad CD or his machine or what, but it took like 3 hours just to get halfway done with the install. At that point we decided to quit.

The reccomended system requirements are 512 MB of RAM and a 64-meg video card. He's running an XP 2500 with 256 MB of DDR.

More interesting info here:

No. They actually haven't released requirements to my knowledge, but according to the article, 512 is "reccomended." I still don't know why only have 256 MB of RAM would cause the install to slow to a crawl.

It says here that 512 MB or greater of RAM memory is required. For example, Windows XP would only work decently if you have 256 MB or greater. My XP runs just fine on my hardware, since it's a 512 MB.

Basically, whatever you're getting, make sure your system requirements are doubled than the requirements in order to get positive results.

Maybe because this is their next generation, hell xp wants 256, you would think common sense would tell you the next one would want more... And what self respecting nerd, would only have 256 of memory anyway??? And if he is not a nerd, why is he trying out vista beta???

He is a nerd. A bigger one than me. He's just a low-end nerd when it comes to PCs.

Oh, no doubt. I was chiding him about the size of his virtual wang every day I was up there. I think I'll buy him some RAM for his birthday.

1st rule of using Microsoft...stay back at least 1 generation, and most of the bugs might be fixed.

1st rule of being a Microsoft Certified Trainer... stay ahead of the freakin' curve, learn about the bugs and new features because somebody won't have a clue how to deal.

The early betas are always pretty raw. Cuz may have gotten his hands on an unchecked build with EVERY piece of possible code available. Build it all out, then pare it back to a smaller size in the checked build. I'm installing mine on a 3.0 Ghz box with 2 GB RAM, on a Virtual PC. I'v set aside some time next week to do my install. Document, document, document.

And as for gochiefs, "Screw You" comment - thanks for letting me yank your chain.

The only reason M$$$$soft is coming out with vista is competition from MacosX and Linux . Mac for graphics/video gui and Linux for security.

Just download Suse or Redhat if hardware supports it. Your downloading a $1,000 operating system that isn't crippled like BillyBillionaire-OS.

My opinion differs somewhat.. I think the only reason they are coming out with a new OS is $$$ they have to have something new to sell. Here is my theory win98se was solid, ME Sux, xpsp2 is solid, vista will suck so you might as well wait till the os that will come after vista. The only issue I would like to see xp fix is spyware and adware. Although if they did that I might be out of a job.

ROFL Yeah... there's no such thing as an unsecure UNIX based operating system. Keep on drinking that Kool-Aid.

Dr. Jesper Johansson, one of Micrsoft's top security gurus, has a shirt he wears at conferences - "My Other Server Is Your Linux Box".

I can lock down an XP box or a Win2k3 server tighter than most people can ever lock down a Unix machine, Linux machine, or BSD.

I know - I didn't write the book on Windows Security... but I was the Technical Editor.
