Eagles’ Pinkston to miss season nfl news

Receiver out after rupturing Achilles’ tendon in practice

The Associated Press

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Todd Pinkston ruptured an Achilles’ tendon in practice Friday and is out for the season.

Pinkston injured his right ankle when he was tripped up on a route down the sideline. He remained down for several minutes before limping to the medical tent. A few hours after the injury, the team said he was out for the season.

The injury is a blow to the Eagles, who aren’t deep at wide receiver. Receiver Terrell Owens, day-to-day because of left groin inflammation, did not practice Friday morning.

“We feel bad from a team standpoint for Todd,” coach Andy Reid said. “He worked very hard this offseason. He was having a heck of a camp, and it’s a shame this happened.”

Pinkston, a six-year veteran, averaged 18.8 yards per catch, third in the league.

Reid said third-year pro Greg Lewis will move into Pinkston’s spot on the first team. Last year, Lewis had 17 receptions for 183 yards in limited action and also caught a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

■ COWBOYS LOSE SPEARS: Dallas rookie defensive end Marcus Spears could miss a month after spraining his right knee and ankle and pulling his groin during a team drill.

Spears was hurt at the end of a running play during the team’s first practice Friday when a lineman was knocked down and rolled up on his leg. After remaining down briefly, Spears had to be helped up by teammates before limping to the sideline.

Cowboys owner Jones said team doctors told him that Spears would need four weeks of rehabilitation for the sprained knee, during which time the other injuries also should heal.

■ DRUMMOND BACK WITH LIONS: After missing the first week of training camp in a contract dispute, Pro Bowl kick returner Eddie Drummond was back on the Detroit Lions’ practice field Friday after signing a one-year, $1.4 million contract a day earlier.

Drummond established himself as one of the league’s best kick returners last season, returning two punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns in 11 games.

■ RAIDERS’ PORTER OUT: Injured Raiders wide receiver Jerry Porter will not play in the team’s preseason opener against San Francisco while he recovers from a pulled hamstring.

Porter, a sixth-year receiver, was hurt during a team scrimmage Monday. He limped off the field, and an exam revealed the damage.

■ BOLDIN OUT 2-3 WEEKS: Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin is expected to miss two to three weeks of practice after breaking his nose.

Boldin was injured Thursday when cornerback Aaron Francisco inadvertently hit his head, causing Boldin’s helmet to slam hard into his nose.
