Man dies after online game marathon

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 Posted: 1102 GMT (1902 HKT)

SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) -- A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

You know, that sounds an awful lot like those hoax stories that were going around a few months ago about a guy dying at the computer....

Well, I guess the fact that you were the one to post this article proves that it wasn't you. Damn. I'm out twenty bucks.

This is actually relatively common in South Korea. This guy isn't the first South Korean to die from too much gaming. They are insane about their video games over there.

Uh... yeah, but man, you think your mind or body or something would get tired. I have a hard enough time playing video games when I'm tired, I can't imagine doing it for that many hours. I've never heard of doing it until you die before....

You could try it and find out what happens.

Of course, not eating OR drinking during that time period could be hazardous. I wonder if he drank ANYTHING?

I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have to get up more to go to the bathroom.

If I'm gonna die from overexertion for 50 hours. I can think of something else I would be doing. After 50 hours she would probably be dead too.

You are just too cool. I am, however, using my daughter's laptop with its crappy little keyboard that is hard to type on and this peice of shit boxor (?) instead of a real mouse. That's what cost me the one minute. but carry on.

If he wanted to be remembered forever, he would've made that little 'dying Pacman' noise as he fell.

Of course if gochiefs was a real gamer he would be down at quakecon right now instead of on the Planet. Especially since it is in Texas...

This story illustrates exactly what is wrong with many news agencys. They just leave you hangin' and don't answer the really important issues that the story brings up. I mean, did the guy win the game or was his game character destroyed?

He probably paused it leaving the guy who was playing with him on hold for eternity. You'll hear the story of him dropping dead in another 12 hours.

Quit his job to have more time to play games? Why didn't he just do it at work?
