Regular Unleaded - $2.49/gallon

Was behind a lady in a big ol' SUV the other day. It took her $78 to fill up. $78 for a freakin tank of gas! If I'm on empty, mine takes over $30. Ouch.

$2.55ish. I don't know. All I know is I put $5 dollars in my tank the other day, and got 1.9 gallons of gas. That just doesn't look right on the display when you get 5 dollars and can't even get 2 gallons of gas.

Not everyone has an SUV for the heck of it. Some of those that are owned are bought and driven because the owners actually need them.

An SUV is a station wagon with a lift kit and bad gas milage. Anyone that "needs" an SUV would have been better off with a minivan. It would have been cheaper and used less gas.

:spock:

BULLSH*T I have a minivan, and it doesn't come any were close to meeting the needs I have for a SUV. The biggest reason I need one is for bad weather because a snow storm or Blizzard can be truly a life threatening event, at least in this area, and I sure don't want to have to depend on my minivan. Another is the accessibility it gives me to terran that my minivan would get stuck in the first 50ft. There are many other reasons, but those are the main ones for me.

It appears your biased against SUV, but here in Wyoming, and the mountain west in general, we buy them for need, not to cruise around town or the highway looking "cool"

Was $2.45 when I filled up on Monday. Cost me $46 to fill up my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (the tank wasn't quite empty either). The next day, I drove by a gas station and the price went up to $2.55. A dime in one day is overboard. This is economical rape if you ask me, and it seems our government is content with standing back and watching.

It doesn't matter what you drive, you're still paying assinine amounts for this shit. I drove a Geo Metro in college to save on gas money. Used to cost me less than $10 to fill it up once a week. Now it would cost me nearly $18 to fill up the same 7 gallon tank. I knew when I bought my Jeep that I'd be paying a lot more in gas money, but it's been worth having because there's so much more you can do easily with and in an SUV that you can't do in other cars.

2.45 a gallon last night.

I think it is ridiculous myself. In the last 2 weeks gas has gone up 30 cents a gallon and there is nothing on the news to justify the increase. Shoot, in the last year, it has almost doubled with no justifiable reason in my book.

I do wonder why, with Oklahoma & Missouri's gas tax roughly 20 cents a gallon and Kansas' tax being 39.9 cents a gallon, why is gas in Kansas the same price as MO and OK? Seems to me that if the gas companies really need the $ like they say, gas would cost a fair bit more in the states where the gas is higher.

And here's another question - is the IRS going to up their .37 cents a mile reinbursement on taxes? That amount was established when gas was 1.20 a gallon.

I think he's pissed because his SUV owning neighbor backed over his flower bed.
Actually that was in some comercial years ago.

I'm taking some heat here for things I'm not saying, so I'll restate my position in one post rather than the whole thread:

If you drive a vehicle that gets bad gas milage you made that choice. You still have a right to bitch about high gas prices but don't act like you're being hurt more than those who get better mileage, YOU chose to be in a position where gas prices affect you more. You may have made that choice for reasons other than vanity (unless you live in JoCo and have 2.4 kids, soccer mom) but you still made the choice.

Have a hobby that burns up lots of gas? Well, I doubt anyone forced you to drag a huge trailer behind a huge truck. It's all about choices. Once again, go ahead and bitch but don't act like you have some special case.

As for overspending on an SUV the fact of the matter is you can get a car with the same features for significantly less money because people generally view SUVs as vanity cars. They're the new sports car, the hip thing to have. It drives up the price based simply on demand and desire, not increased quality or features.

As for me, I'm looking at trading the 300M down to something else that gets better than 25mpg. I do like the power and the size of the vehicle, but I'm actually having to drive 3 or 4 days a week and I'm not willing to shell out that much for gas. It's all choices.

IMO we will see gas continue to climb until it gets to the point where the avarage American consumer is forced to start convserving. There will come a time in the next few years where used SUVs will be flooding the market and you'll be able to pick them up for next to nothing. Hybrid vehicles will skyrocket in price. THEN you'll see gas prices decline. The oil companies and oil sheiks need/want the masses driving those gas hogs.

Update: Most every station is at $2.55 today. I am sure glad I filled up at $2.37 on Monday.

On the SUV discussion, I have a Suzuki Sidekick 4-door with 4 wheel drive and get 28 MPG in town (110,000 miles on it too). It is not big enough for my family now that my kids (3 of them) have gotten into their teen eyars but was fine until then. Not as big as most SUV's (most probably wouldn't call it an SUV at all) but it gets decent mileage and when I was in Flagstaff, had no problems with the snow or the mountain trails.

Some funny things about the raising price of gas that I have been observing:

1. People that still "put 10 bucks in". Fill that sumbitch up, it's not getting any cheaper.

2. There is a station that is always cheaper than the rest of the stations in town. Its at 29th and Oakley for those of you who are familiar with Topeka. People literally line up 4 cars deep to get gas (unbranded gas ) at this place. However, there is a place not even a quarter of a mile a way that is 1 cent more expensive, but no lines. I laugh at these sheep.

3. Not really exclusive to expensive gas, but people who "even it out" when they are using a debit/credit card. Really, whats the point?

4. People trying to figure out their MPG by using "how much they paid at the pump" rather than how many miles they've driven. I still don't understand that one.

5. People's theories on why gas is high. Always a laugher.

In 1974, during the first oil crisis (let's see if the pups know about that one- gas was $0.50 to $0.60/gal, but in short supply causing long lines at the pump), NASCAR shortened all of the races by 10%, but not the season.
Token gesture? Sure.

In 1979, I was pumping gas during the second crisis, and by law, we had to use the odd/even system. (Cars with odd # plates could gas up only on odd # days, etc.) We were short constantly, many days closing by noon because there was no gas. When that truck would roll in, people came out of the woodwork. You bet your ass all of us at the station filled our cars up as soon as we could.

Prices reached a buck a gallon that year, but our old pumps only were calibrated up to $0.99, so we had to set them for, say, $0.52 for $1.04 price, and just charge double the pump reading. Good times.

Good times.

Along the same lines I recently agreed to go to the NASCAR experience film at the IMAX with the mrs.I did not have a good time but that is besides the point,I just shook my head when the narrator said that NASCAR uses 1 million dollars in tires per race.

I don't know about that but I heard a quick blip the other day on Phoenix radio about problems with not enough jet fuel for the airplanes. I don't know if that was just local there or if this is a problem across the country.
This is what is so stupid. I booked a flight to Vegas from KC for $86. This past weekend it cost me $75 to drive to Noel, MO (way down in the SW corner of MO). Doesn't make much sense.

Nowhere in my earlier post-trip down memory lane did I answer the thread question.
