CHIEFS NOTEBOOK

Quinn getting up to speed

Recently signed QB will play Saturday

By ADAM TEICHER

The Kansas City Star

Amid creeping concerns that neither Todd Collins nor Damon Huard will be ready for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener, the Chiefs have accelerated the schedule for their other veteran backup quarterback, the recently signed Jonathan Quinn.

The Chiefs planned for Quinn to take most of the snaps in Saturday’s preseason game against Seattle at Arrowhead Stadium after Trent Green is finished. Green might play the entire first half and perhaps into the third quarter.

“We don’t have much choice right now,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “It’s amazing how well (Quinn has) done. It’s amazing his recall and his ability to step right in and play.”

Quinn joined the Chiefs on Tuesday. He played for the Chiefs for two seasons and in the same offense last year for Chicago.

“I’m as ready as I can be for not being on the team and then getting only two days of practice,” Quinn said. “I’ll go out there, give it a whirl and see what happens. I’m coming in late in the game.”

Collins has a fractured hand and appears to be at least a couple of weeks away from being ready to return. Huard received a concussion in last week’s game, is still experiencing symptoms and hasn’t returned to practice.

The other reserve quarterback is rookie James Kilian, who is a long way from being prepared for a regular-season game.

■ Bell questionable again

Vermeil said linebacker Kendrell Bell may not play against the Seahawks because of concerns over his shoulder. Bell did a limited amount of contact work earlier in the week.

“The player knows when he’s really ready and when he’s not ready,” Vermeil said. “(Wednesday) he jumped in there and he flashed around. You can tell he has movement just like Derrick Johnson does. Those guys are rare. He showed some signs of not wanting to use everything yet and just turning himself loose in the contact area. When we put him in the ballgame, I really want him to be able to do that.”

Asked whether Bell would play in the regular-season opener, Vermeil said, “I expect him to, but we aren’t going to put him out there unless he’s really ready.”

■ Dante Hall didn’t practice again Thursday and said he won’t play Saturday. Hall, the Chiefs’ kick-return specialist, is nursing a sore knee that he aggravated last weekend against the Cardinals.

“(Wednesday) was the first day I felt better,” Hall said. “I was actually able to do something light like lifting on it and working out.”

Hall, who also plays receiver, vowed to be ready for the Sept. 11 opener against the Jets. He also wants to play in the preseason finale next week at St. Louis.

■ The Chiefs said tests to rookie linebacker Kris Griffin showed no damage to his Achilles’ tendon. But Griffin has soreness in the leg and may not play against Seattle.

Chiefs charity

A record $574,274 was raised in this year’s Chiefs Charity Game. The game supported St. Vincent’s Operation Breakthrough.

"Hall, who also plays receiver, vowed to be ready for the Sept. 11 opener against the Jets. He also wants to play in the preseason finale next week at St. Louis."

The difference between Hall and Bell.

I hadn't been worried until this week. Bell sounds like a first class Pu$$y.

I hope I am wrong.

I'm holding off judgment until the games actually count.

Bell goes out & tears up the Jets....no one will be calling him a puss.

Yep. After HE extended an invitation to folks/doubters to "watch" him play last week. Looks like most of the Steeler fans were right about this guy. :hmmm:

There is no way that anyone can tell me that it is a good thing for a MLB to not have contact when he hasn't played in a year. The "We're saving him" B.S. is just that - B.S. IMO. I'd think that Bell has MORE of a chance for injury, once he sees legitimate contact since he hasn't experienced it in so long. In practice they can control it, in a game they can't. :shake:

having so many players out all preseason makes me nervous.

bad things usually happen when you expect a team to just be able to "flip a switch" and turn it on.

almost never works

It's beginning to look like a major mistake to have signed him.

I'm on both sides of the fence here, I want to see Bell play but we know he can play. Give the scrubs some time now and it could be a very good benefit for us in the future.

Yep...read the whole f'n thing. Sounds like DV and CP are protecting the investment. I didn't read anything that sounds like BELL saying he shouldn't be playing.

Asked whether Bell would play in the regular-season opener, Vermeil said, “I expect him to, but we aren’t going to put him out there unless he’s really ready.”

WTF does that mean -- "really ready"? 80%? 100%?

Is that Courtney Love's snatch I smell, or is something fishy going on in Chiefs camp?

Protecting their investment is BS ... Listen I was willing to give Bell the Benefit of the doubt up until this point, but no more if he is out of Saturdays game. If the Chiefs wanted to protect their investment they would hold out Holmes, Green, Surtain, and most of the Offensive line.

Why do you play starters in preseason games??? .... To get them into game shape, practice does not due that. Knowing how this organisation is I am really starting to get suspicious that something may be very wrong. I hope not but somethig is not right. If he is hurt fine tell us up front and we will deal with it (well some will the rest of the board will impload for a couple of days :p ),but this maybe he is or maybe he isn't injuried crap is stupid.

I do not care if he plays at all until opening Sunday.

Then, I want him to play 18 or 19 in a row depending on whether we have a playoff bye or not!!!!

I'm just hoping that "protecting their investment" doesn't equal "covering their asses" for buying damaged goods.

Yeah the whole Bell thing just doesn't add up. From day one he said he could go out this weekend and play. Was that just to get a contract or what? He hasn't hit anyone yet, but now says maybe he will be okay by the opener. Chiefs must have known he had a bum shoulder and just signed him anyway hoping for the best. They should have played the cards right away and been honest with the fans instead of making it out to be a huge signing to turn around the defense. This smells worse than Cortney love's snatch-this is begining to sound like the Dan Williams big toe farce. He got 5 mil and never played again.

Guys, that is why he has a contract like he does... If he cant produce/ stay healthy they can opt out and not lose a lot of money on this guy, it was a risk move to get him. We offered more money to Hartwell, didnt get him...

Bell may not play more than 4-8 games this season, but I dont think there was a better MLB that we didnt try to bring in...

Fine I can deal with that, just don't bs or jerk my chain (the Chiefs Organization) telling me the truth about Bell. This Organisation and it PR Bull**** is getting really old. I don't mind that we tried to go out and improve the LB postition and could only sign Bell and not Hartwell or Trotter. Infact if Bell is injuried fine. Tell me/us. Don't say how great we, the organization, did on the signing just to save face and then not have the decency to stand up and tell us the truth of the matter.

Understood... but do you not think that every organization is this way, shite man, you have countless examples of teams doing the same thing...

my point was ...

covering their salary cap arses with a 2 tiered signing bonus doesn't help us win THIS YEAR. Which is what this offseason was supposed to be all about.

who cares about a dam tiered signing bonus if we are screwed this year

I remember years ago when Albert Lewis was animate his contract negotiations and missed the entire preseason. Then he sat in Carl's "Magic Box" (the GM suite) to watch the home opener. He signed the following day and was immediately in the starter role the next week and had a great season. If I remember correctly, this was the transition year into the Marty days, so although he wasn't new to the Chiefs, he was new to the coaching staff.

I don't know if Bell is damaged goods or not, but I would rather find out in a game that meant something than a preseason game. If he has talent, he'll be able to catch up quick, he's not a rookie. If not, getting his backup the experience time is in our best interest. I know I want to see our best linebackers perform, but I'd rather wait til the regular season if there is a hint of possibly rushing an injury. One can never tell when an injury will occur even if it is vulnerable. One quarter of Bell in a meaningful game is better than one quarter of Bell in a preseason. Let him risk it in a regular season game, not the preseason.

I hope the Chiefs are not trying to hide Griffin from other teams in order to put him on the PS. He'll never clear waivers.
