CHIEFS MAKE NINE TRANSACTIONS, TRIM ROSTER TO 75 PLAYERS
Aug 30, 2005, 3:28:29 PM

Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club has made nine transactions in order to comply with the NFL’s first mandatory cutdown deadline. The Chiefs have trimmed their roster to 75 players, including 10 NFL Europe roster exemptions.

The Chiefs placed LB Shawn Barber on the Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP) and FB Robert Holcombe on the Reserve/Injured List. The club also waived T Thomas Barnett, WR Nathaniel Curry, S Shaunard Harts, WR Darrell Hill, P Nick Murphy, S Willie Pile and WR Richard Smith. Each team must finalize its 53-man roster on Saturday, September 3rd and can create an eight-man practice squad beginning on Sunday, September 4th.

I just looked at the depth chart.

FS 1.Wesley 2. Woods
SS 1.Knight 2.Bartee 3.Connot

I assume they'll cut Connot. He sucks. But that leaves us with Woods. I was hoping they'd get rid of him because his salary is too large. WTH?

My guess:

SS: Knight and Bartee

FS: Wesley and Woods

yep. Wesley was our SS last year, and then made the transition to FS with the addition of Knight. So Woods was our FS last year, and Bartee will backup Knight at SS I guess.

Or, if something were to happen to Knight, Wesley would prolly move back to SS and Woods would then play FS.

So they must think that Barber will play again since they didn't just cut him outright?

After 6 weeks he can come back, and they can get him ready for two weeks after that without him counting against the roster if he doesn't play. So essentially we'd get him back around midseason if all goes well, which by that time either we'll have injury issues to address and he can step in or someone will suck and he can take over, or if neither of those cases happens we can cut him or place him on IR the rest of the year if he's still injured...

Cruz is a FB, Brown is a RB.

I thought Cruz has looked decent, so was guessing he would make the team at least initially to backup TRich. Plus he has been playing a lot of ST.

And Brown will be cut next week. McKenzi Smith has looked really good, and playing a ton of ST, esp. returning kickoffs. I believe this sets up Horn to get the ax, with Smith our RB3 and KR2.

Well Bartee has apparently been one of the better safeties in camp, he does have an INT.

But, personally, I don't want to cut him for special teams reasons. He's fast, and he can actually tackle. I hope we never have to worry about him playing, but he's a quality ST defender. I think that plays a part in the decision.

Well they haven't in past years I don't think. Last year they did, but that's because we had to shove Beisel into a starting role, Boerigter was hurt, Kris Wilson was hurt, etc, etc. Lots of problems, weren't able to put all our biggest and fastest guys on the field.

The guy was asked to play a position, corner, that he wasn't suited for.
Because he was left there, and sucked at it for so long, some people have blind hatred for him.

The fact is, if he had never been asked to make the transition to corner, but had been allowed to play the position that is natural for him, he would not be so despised today.

wrong answer, when a player retires the player/team has several months before they have to turn them in

IIRC it's like 18 months

if wood retires we could wait and turn the papers in after june 1st next year and (i believe) still spread the hit out over 2 years.

I'm suprised at all the outrage over Harts. I never saw anything out of him to make me think he would ever be anything but depth. As someone else said, he's not noticeably better than Woods, and he's a much smaller cap hit.

As for "safety of the future", I didn't see that from him. But even so, I bet Harts and Pile don't get grabbed by anyone else.
