Sports-talk host and model carries spear for KC on latest ‘Survivor’

By TIM ENGLE

The Kansas City Star

You don’t see too much one-on-one basketball or Scattergories-playing on “Survivor,” but if either turns out to be one of the challenges, Danni Boatwright should have it made.

She is only the second Kansas City area “Survivor” contestant (third if we reach out to Marshall, Mo., and count Twila Tanner), and while it’s dicey to predict, we’d guess she’ll stick around longer than the first couple of episodes.

Why? Well, just consider:

■ Boatwright, 30, is tough. T-o-u-g-h. She did two-a-day workouts to prepare for the show, and she got the guys at Cabela’s to teach her how to hand-fish and use a bow and arrow.

In her Tonganoxie High School days, she ran track and played volleyball. And basketball, of course, which she also played with her brothers.

“I would never play her in a game of H-O-R-S-E,” says friend John Vannatta, “because she would embarrass me. And she’d probably embarrass any other guy who would accept her challenge.

“She’s a diehard Jayhawks fan and Chiefs fan. … If you watch ‘Monday Night Football’ with her, wear your earplugs.”

Chris Gough, Boatwright’s co-host on a Sunday morning talk show on 610 Sports, calls her the biggest female sports fan he’s ever met.

■ As you might have guessed, Boatwright is super-competitive. Board-game night at her folks’ home in Tonganoxie, Kan., no longer includes Scattergories because “the girl would claw your eyes out to win,” says Gough, exaggerating (we assume) a bit. “That could be grating on people, but she’s very cunning, so I’m sure on ‘Survivor’ she could use that to her advantage.”

■ She’s apparently nice, too. “Her personality puts her over the top,” says Gough, a reporter for Time Warner Cable’s Metro Sports. “She’s very bubbly. She tries to make friends with everyone in the room.”

Her mom, Vickie Cackler, says: “I always call her a velvet steamroller. She can make you feel really good and happy, but then she can run right over you.”

■ And we might as well mention that Boatwright is gorgeous, which never hurts on TV or deserted islands. She is, in fact, an ex-beauty queen — first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant in 1996 (she was Miss Kansas) and Miss Kansas Teen USA in ’92. She has also had “a huge worldwide career in modeling,” her mom says.

Buff, beautiful, sweet and hyper-competitive? As we were saying, she should do well on “Survivor.”

This season of the show, No. 11, stranded the 16 contestants “deep in the Guatemalan rainforests amid the ruins of an ancient civilization,” according to CBS. The adventure begins tonight with an 11-mile overnight hike through the jungle.

Filming got under way in June and has already wrapped. Presumably two finalists will have to wait until December to find out who scores the top prize of $1 million.

As for Boatwright, she’s been back in Tonganoxie for three or four weeks, but CBS won’t let her talk to the media. Or a lot of other people.

She’s still reporting to work at 610 Sports most Sunday mornings (except when the 10-to-noon show, “610 Weekend Rap,” is pre-empted by Chiefs stuff), but she’s not allowed to go on the air.

Boatwright is single and lives with two 100-pound Rhodesian ridgebacks (those would be dogs). She was married for five years to country singer Wade Hayes (his debut single, “Old Enough to Know Better,” was a big hit in 1995-96); they divorced two years ago.

Cackler, her mom, says Boatwright has been helping out at her store, Evening Extraordinaire, in Shawnee. (It’s a special-occasion dress shop, not an escort service, Cackler points out.) Boatwright is also an independent consultant for a line of health and beauty products, and she still models.

Her goal, however, is to get into big-time sports broadcasting, like on ESPN. “I think her ultimate dream would be working on the sidelines at the Final Four someday,” says Vannatta, executive director of the Miss Kansas USA pageant.

Meanwhile, we’re guessing Boatwright would settle for the Final Two of “Survivor: Guatemala.” With any luck the finale will include a game of Scattergories.

He is from Manhattan Kansas and a K-State fan!. Wow, Kansas is represented by 2 people and they even survived the first elimination!!

I went to HS with her. Her dad taught 8th grade science if I remember correctly. Her mom was my Senior English teacher.

I even sneezed on Danielle in a play. Yeah those were the days.

Didn't shower with her tho.

She dated Stoney Case for a while.

I've never even watched one episode of Survivor. Is it worth watching? I mean, minus the hot girls, is it worth watching? I say that because I can just watch hot girls on Skinemax or on the Internet.

I agree.

When I got married my wife got me into watching the reality shows like Survivor and the Amazing Race.

I didn't have much interest in them till then and NOW I actually look forward to the new season/shows.

It is really fun to watch people try to play the game (either show) and shoot themselves in the foot with words or actions.

Royals announcer hitting two for two in recent weeks

JEFFREY FLANAGAN
Kansas City Star

The Royals may be a mess, but Royals radio broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre is definitely in a zone these days.

Just last week, Lefebvre was named as the “best announcer” in Kansas City by The Pitch.

And now we hear he’s been dating the extremely-agreeable-to-the-eyes Danni Boatwright.

Yes, that’s the same Boatwright who’s on CBS’ reality show “Survivor” that is airing now through December. That’s the same Boatwright who is an ex-beauty queen — she was a Miss Kansas Teen USA in 1992 and a Miss Kansas in 1996 and a first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant in 1996.

Did we mention she’s a model as well? And a huge sports fan? And a Sunday-morning talk-show host on KCSP?

Well, the latter is a stretch, because she hasn’t been allowed by CBS to do that talk show since last spring, before she started the “Survivors” gig. And a Sunday-morning talk show from 10 a.m. to noon won’t exactly make you a household name.

But her resume and snapshots should be more than enough to make Kansas City’s male population envious of Lefebvre.

But let’s back up: First off, is it true about Ryan and Danni?

“We’re very close friends,” Lefebvre said.

Hmmm. How close?

“I don’t know,” he said, with a grin. “How about with a capital ‘C’? ”

And that’s all the no-kiss-and-tell Lefebvre would allow.

But my numerous spies indicate that the two were set up by Mix 93.3 FM jock Kelly Urich last February, and the two have been spotted frequently about town here and in her hometown of Tonganoxie, Kan.

As for Boatwright, she’s not allowed to talk to the media at all, at least until if and when she is voted off the island. (Don’t even waste your time asking Lefebvre about that.)

As for his recognition in The Pitch, Lefebvre said he was a little nervous reading his name there, remembering the times he has been lit up by the publication.

“I’m not sure I can say I’m the best announcer in Kansas City,” Lefebvre said. “But the part of their analysis of me that I enjoyed the most was when they said I could retain my enthusiasm without becoming a total homer. That’s really what I strive to do.

“And the thing I always remember is that even though the team lost 106 games, there’s always someone out there who’s listening for the first time, or who’s listening because they’re fans of a certain player, and you have to give it your best every game.”
