I've been watching this unfold live on MSNB for a while now. It seems a Jet Blue Airbus was deploying it's landing gear and the front gear came down 90 degrees from normal. In other words, instead of the front gear and it's wheels pointing from the front to the back of the plane, the wheels are pointing from wing tip to wing tip.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ has a live video feed and MSNBC is covering the landing live. The plane is supposed to attempt a landing any minute now.

I would sh*t if i was a passenger on it.

And pissed myself too. I'm sure theres going to a lot of screaming going on in just a bit when they attempt a landing. Let's just hope the landing doesn't include a fiery conflagration of humanity.

Start praying, this could get nasty. I can't imagine any way for this to get down safely.

The good news is, the rear gear is deployed properly which will keep the engines and fuel tanks from smacking the ground. I'm betting the front landing gear snaps off and the nose of the plane will just slide down the runway.

I would imagine the cell phones on the plane were busy sending thier familys and loved ones final messages if they don't make it through this alive.

There's some guy on there right now that said this happened with a Boeing 747 and the plane landed safely. It just left a big ass skid mark down the runway.

CNN reports that it dumped fuel in the Pacific Ocean.

They will be extremely lucky if fire doesn't sweep through the entire cabin.

True. The experts also said if landed correctly there is a good chance it will be ok.

CNN is full of shit. They have said repeatedly that this plane does NOT have the capability to dump fuel. They have been circling the airport for a long time burning off fuel. They say the plane could stay up in the air another 2 hours easy without running out of fuel.

Brock

It's a single aisle aircraft. There is no fuel dump.

My brother told me (he was a mechanic for TWA) that it is illegal for them to dump fuel.

And that they have to burn it off. To accerlerate this process they fly with the flaps down and such.

Also they build the planes so the can't dump fuel anymore.

Thats just what he said. It makes sense, since the tv keeps saying the airplane is trying to burn the fuel they have.

Experts?

Anyone can see it will coast down the runway on its rear wheels and begin doing donuts the moment the front landing gear touches down....

Seriously though, wouldn't they just lube the hell out of the middle of the runway with some foam or somthing so the front doesn't grab?

No. Wide body aircraft such as the 747 and 777 can dump fuel. Sometimes it is necessary to reduce the weight of the aircraft in order to land, such as when an immediate return to the departure point is forced by mechanical malfunction.

Scary to watch. Those sparks looked like they could lead to something much worse.

I'm amazed that the gear withstood that punishment. Even now it's still supporting the weight of the front of the plane, after being dragged at high speed down a runway.

As good a job as the pilot did landing that plane, I am hoping that all of that circling around bought enough time to get the old BAC low enough to pass any breathalyzer those kooks out there in California would administer.

I was at work when this all happened. Just watched the video on CNN. Did you notice that the wheel rims on the gear got burned almost completely off?

Huge kudos to the pilot/copilot. One wrong twitch and that plane could have turned into a fireball on the runway.

Doesn't matter. That's called happenstance, chance, or coincidence.

When you get behind a car, you have control over your vehicle.

When you get on an airplane, you have control over nothing.

What are the chances the express elevator malfunctions?

I not only drive my car myself, but I also service it, or determine who services it if I don't do it myself. I can, with 100% certainty, know that the oil is changed, and changed correctly. I can stand there while they rotate the tires and make sure the lug nuts are tightened so that my wheel won't fall off when I'm out on the freeway.

Sorry, but the airlines are notorious for cutting corners, especially when it comes to maintenance, and the only body responsible for holding them accountable has no accountability.

Heh. The express elevator is always working on a plane :)

I hear what you are saying, but I fly so damn much that I gave up worrying about it long ago. I've flown on some really rinky-dink airlines in my time. I've had some pretty tense moments flying, mainly over the Pacific, but nothing that serious.

One time, we were going into a VERY stiff headwind, and the pilot misjudged his fuel vs. wind speed. We were flying from a non-stop from San Fran to Beijing. He had to land the plane in Tokyo. Not really all that big of a deal. I'm sure he could have made it, but he wasn't altogether sure. However, It was better than him running out btw Tokyo and Beijing and having to ditch the plane in the Sea of Japan...........

I've flown a few places, including across the Atlantic (to Amsterdam). But I haven't flown since we lost an engine on takeoff a couple of years ago in Chicago. The engine housing/cover actually came off the plane and the engine died, leaving us with only 1.
