1. DERRICK JOHNSON, linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson (6-foot-4, 242 pounds) was the 15th pick in the 2005 draft, and there were mixed opinions. Some scouts felt he struggled to disengage from blockers and would struggle at the NFL level. But so far, so good for Johnson. The Chiefs defense was not very good in 2004 but the unit is off to an excellent start in 2005 (12 points per game), and Johnson has been an important part of the turnaround. In two starts, he has 17 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. The former Texas standout is on pace for a 100-tackle season. People in NFL circles have described him to me as a big Derrick Brooks.
