The Eagle is our national bird. The Star-Spangled Banner is our national song. E Pluribus Unum is our national motto. We've got lots of other national stuff, and that's not even counting all of the state birds, state minerals, state mottos, and stuff.

I don't think we have a national food, though. What should our national food be? I'll take suggestions here, and will add a poll to this thread when we have a good list, assuming that we don't reach consensus beforehand.

A few potential contenders might be apple pie or chocolate chip cookies. Could a drink be our national food? If so, carbonated sodas can make a claim. In honor of our multicultural heritage, I might also suggest pizza. What else do we have?

McDonalds

Ah. The burger and fries. That is indeed a strong contender.

Pizza is actually an American food. It is a broad misconception that it was invented or created if you will in Italy. I think Fried Chicken would have to be considered on the national food list.

What a load of crap. Everyone knows fried chicken was invented in Africa.

Rain Man

Fried chicken. Good, good.

What about ice cream? Could ice cream be a contender? When I think about it, I think of county fairs and people cranking ice cream makers while barbershop quartets sing.

Would we consider an iconic name-brand food? For example, a Hershey bar. That's about as American as you can get.

Oh! Oh! Or Bazooka bubble gum!

Hammock Parties
10-08-2005, 10:34 AM
What about potato chips? Oreo cookies? Coca-cola?

I still think the Hamburger might be the best choice.

Where was barbecue invented?

I was thinking Pizza before I even saw it mentioned by Kevin in his initial post.

My first thought was the hamburger.

Pizza is pretty good too (well, it is better than pretty good to eat. It is a pretty good idea for this pole though)

Rain Man

Steak and a baked potato would be a good option, too. With Texas toast.

Hmm, maybe this should be the National Meal rather than the National Food. Or maybe we can have categories for both.

THIS Germany?

Not likely. They're broke and without a gubment/ruling party (as of a couple weeks ago anyway.) They'd be lucky if someone payed attention to them long enough to start an argument...

I've heard it said that BBQ is truly the only "American" food, and beyond that other countries have tried to do it, but with nowhere NEAR the success we've had. Most other foods that are "American" are rooted in something else. Something we've taken and bastardized into what we know it as now.

Gotta be corn and turkey. most other foods are too regionlized to a 'national'

even though Californians probably 'smoke a bowl' instead of a turkey.

I'd rather smoke a bowl than a turkey.

My college roommate would do both. A smoked turkey tastes great. Tastes even better when you're baked.

Your mother doesn't approve of you doing drugs, Brian.

Lighting it was probably a b*tch, too.
