Mr. Kotter

1. Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum (and Diet Coke...)

2. Beautiful Caribbean women, to admire.

3. A day off from work....Monday, to honor Columbus

Yup, that about does it for me.

1. I'm thankful that he didn't make it to the East Indies, or otherwise I'd be living in Borneo now.

2. I'm thankful that he killed all the Indians so that I don't have to worry about attacks.

3. I'm thankful that his name wasn't something like Dorfenburger, so that the capital of Ohio would seem just kind of odd.

4. I'm thankful that he discovered American before America discovered Europe, because it would've set western culture behind to have Indians riding Conestoga wagons across France and Germany, introducing the tomahawk and the buffalo to Europeans.

You really think teachers are worth $35 per hour? I really, really disagree and so does the rest of society.

Well, we'll have to disagree then. Sadly, you are probably right though.

Of course, that type of thinking is precisely why teaching can't attract the number of quality people that would be necessary to truly make our schools better than they are. Idealism and "job satisfaction" only go so far; low pay is why many quality teachers leave the profession for higher paying jobs--retail management at JC Penney's for instance.

Anyone who thinks teachers only work 8 hours a day, 9 months a years....are mistaken. The poor ones may, but most of us put in many more hours than that. And in the summers, professional development and continuing education usually take another 4-6 weeks for most conscientious teachers I know.

And then people have the audacity to COMPLAIN about the quality of the average teacher---especially in inner-city or urban districts. :shake:

Remember, you get what you pay for.

This is how I like to celebrate Columbus day as well. Do it as Columbus did, f*ckin drunk. Of course I have to work on this day, so it usually makes for some interesting times. However one inparticular time I had a very unpleasant experience. I was minding my own business at work drunk out of my mind, and passed out underneath my desk. I woke up like an hour and a half later with vasoline all over my bum. I never could figure that out, and jesus was I stiff after that nap. I could hardly walk outside to have a cigarette. I'm not blaming teachers for anything. Either the student is going to learn or he isn't. The teacher has little to do with it IMO. Teachers have whined for at least the 40 years I've been aware of it that they are underpaid. Yet there has been no shortage of teachers. Supply and demand at work.

You are right, about some teachers....in some districts.

As a blanket statement and stereotype, you are dead wrong though. Of the 120 member faculty at the school I work at.....roughly, I'd say there are 50-60 high quality, dedicated and hardworking teachers who would excel, and I mean EXCEL in just about any other profession. There are another 40-50 that are very capable but nothing special....and would easily make more money in another job, but remain in teaching because it's comfortable, it's secure, and it's rewarding to them.

Only about 20-25 or so people who migh fit the description/the stereotype you have in your mind. But, their number is growing.

Go right ahead overseas. If that's what floats your boat. I don't think it will make one damned bit of difference to the US. Teaching is one easy gig that pays accordingly. It's been that way for 100 years. Not likely to change soon.

That is true with some kids; but certainly not all.

Many kids benefit tremendously from having a good teacher, versus a baby-sitter. Check the research for yourself, if you don't believe me.

As for a teacher shortage....you are wrong. There IS presently a shortage of teachers in many parts of the country; and it is likely to get much worse....as the baby-boomers are retiring, and fewer kids are going into the profession---and who can blame them?

Second, it's very rewarding. The relationships you build, the progress you see, the difference you can make....are not likely to be replicated in many other jobs.

Finally, I'm very good at what I do. I know you may not believe that....but I am. I've had numerous opportunities to leave for more lucrative jobs, but the security and comfort of knowing that makes it a difficult decision. I know it's foreign to some folks, but I left a six figure sales job with a pharmaceutical/medical sales company to become a teacher....in part, because I hated that job; but in part, I wanted to do something more rewarding with my life.

I find it very difficult to believe you left a 6 figure job to teach in South Dakota. There's more to this story I'm sure. But I don't really give a shit as teachers are paid what they are worth or supply and demand would take care of it.

I was in Texas....worked for Baxter Healthcare, "Scientific Products"....we sold chit to hospitals and clinics in east Texas and western Arkansas.

You want my former supervisor's phone number?

So you disapprove of me spending time BEFORE school hours.....and AFTER school hours.....and 3 minutes one hour, 5 minutes another, 10 minutes a third hour......and my LUNCH Period, personal planning period.....visiting the Planet??? I've actually become very skilled at multi-tasking.

If that is your honest thought, I can't tell you how wrong you are....maybe you haven't mastered the multi-tasking thing, like I have...but having four kids helps you to "juggle" things pretty efficiently.

With selective attention to particular threads, as is my MO....you don't have to spend a lot of time. I check the threads that interest me, but pay little or no attention to the other threads. I'm logged on "all day" but only check periodically.....my e-mail, my messages, and the Planet....about two or three times an hour--during breaks, or down time. If that means I'm here "continually"....I guess, maybe so.

Whatever, Skip. Good night.
