I really think this year he will get in the HOF.

Other that Reggie White & Troy Aikman who are sure thing to get in, I am a believer that DT gets in this time.

I don't mind at all, just keep an eye on it, because sometimes my avs get bizarre.

Here's to a Chiefs victory and a great play tomorrow so I can get another avatar rolling.

Nine-time Chiefs Pro Bowler Derrick Thomas sustained fractures of the vertebrae in the neck and back Sunday in a single-car accident on interstate 435 near Woodland Avenue in Kansas City, North, that killed one person and injured another, team officials announced today.

Dr. Jon Browne, the Chiefs' team physician, said Thomas has paralysis in his legs and said he would be transferred to a medical facility in Miami as quickly as possible. He refused to speculate how much paralysis Thomas will have or when he would be moved.

Asked for his prognosis, Browne said: "It takes time to check these things out. Improvement can come slowly or in rapid bursts."

Thomas and another passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene, were thrown from the vehicle.

Teammates and friends gathered at the hospital today. Peterson and Chiefs coach Gunther Cunningham were joined by Steve Palermo, a former American League umpire who was shot in 1991 and suffered partial paralysis.

"Do not rule anything in," said Palermo, a Kansas City resident and friend of Thomas. "And do not rule anything out."

"This type of injury, it's impossible to know how it's going to turn out, but Derrick is a fighter," Palermo said.

A source close to the family, who asked not to be identified, said that as Thomas was treated at the scene, he was conscious and said he had no feeling in his legs.

Later at the Liberty Hospital emergency room, Thomas, 33, reportedly still had no feeling in his legs.

A close friend, who also asked not to be identified, said physicians made a preliminary diagnosis that Thomas was suffering from a broken vertebra in his back and that his spinal cord had been damaged, but not severed.

Physicians also said he may be able to walk again, though not play football, the friend said.

Reports from the Missouri Highway Patrol identified the man who was killed as Michael D. Tellis, 49, of Kansas City, Kan., a friend of Thomas' who once was a business partner in a limousine venture.

A third man, John C. Hagebusch, 34, of Raymore, suffered minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to Liberty Hospital but was not admitted. Only Hagebusch was wearing his seat belt, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Chiefs President/General Manager Carl Peterson would not confirm the nature of Thomas' injuries, only their severity.

"He has been seriously injured," Peterson said. "The extent of those injuries are still being determined. He is alert, comfortable, stable and will be in the hospital in Liberty overnight.

"We are following the dictates of the medical people and will provide you with information as it becomes available to us. We ask for Kansas City fans and fans everywhere for their prayers for Derrick."

Joe Crossett, Liberty Hospital administrator, said members of Thomas' family had asked the hospital not to discuss his injuries in detail.

Other members of the Chiefs organization reacted to news of Thomas' accident with shock.

"It's devastating to me," coach Gunther Cunningham said Sunday night. "Forget about the football aspect of it. He has given a lot to this city and to this organization. It's a tough thing to deal with."

Teammates also were stunned.

"I'm shocked," tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "It's unbelievable."

"I've just been praying for him, his family and for Mike and his family," said fullback Tony Richardson.

Peterson, who was attending the NFC championship game between the Rams and Buccaneers in St. Louis Sunday, tried to leave early to return to Kansas City, said Chiefs public relations director Bob Moore. However, weather prevented Peterson from catching a flight in.

Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt also planned to return to Kansas City from Jacksonville, Fla., where he awarded the AFC Championship trophy that bears his name to the Tennessee Titans.

Thomas was reportedly on his way to Kansas City International Airport to catch a flight to St. Louis for the game, where he had sideline passes.

According to the police report, Thomas was driving about 1:30 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle on the snow- and ice-covered road. The car traveled into the median and rolled several times.

Thomas' 1999 Chevrolet Suburban looked as though it had rolled at least twice, said tow truck driver Jerry Thomas, no relation to Derrick Thomas.

"The roof was smashed down in on it, I'd say at least 8 inches on the driver's side," Jerry Thomas said. "The hood was squashed down on top."

The vehicle's right rear tire and brake drum was ripped off as well, Jerry Thomas said.

The grassy median where Thomas crashed rests along a serene, deserted stretch of I-435.

Thomas arrived at Liberty Hospital about 2:30 p.m. and was conscious when he came in, said Crossett, who briefed reporters about 6:30 p.m.

Physicians had not operated but had conducted diagnostic tests on Thomas, Crossett said, declining to specify the nature of the tests.

Thomas was with family members, Liberty Hospital physicians and Chiefs doctors. Thomas' mother, Edith Morgan, was in Orlando, Fla., earlier Sunday and didn't learn of her son's injury until she returned to her Miami area home later in the day. She was attempting to reach Kansas City Sunday evening.

Crossett would not characterize Thomas' spirits.

"We've had a number of calls, and there are a number of his friends and family here," Crossett said.

Thomas' sister was among the visitors.

Other visitors included Dennis Thum, the Chiefs' executive vice president and assistant general manager, Jon Browne, team physician, and Joe Waeckerle, a trauma specialist who works on the sidelines at Chiefs games.

Teammates Marcus Spears and Bracy Walker and former teammate Tracy Simien also were at the hospital.

Thomas has been one of the NFL's most dominant pass rushers. He could single-handedly dominate games and became feared by opponents for his ability to not only rush from a quarterback's blind side, but also for his skill in creating turnovers.

Thomas had a league-record seven sacks in a 1990 game against Seattle. He had six sacks in a 1998 game against Oakland.

Thomas had 20 sacks in 1990, putting him fifth on the NFL's single-season list.

His production slowed the past two seasons, and he was even benched during running situations in 1998. But he was still respected by opponents, who game-planned to account for Thomas on every pass play.

I think it started with a blood clot in his leg that made it to his heart eventually. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
