TAMPA -- Two Carolina Panthers cheerleaders were arrested early Sunday morning at a Tampa nightclub.

According to a police report Kristen Lanier Owen, 22, and Angela Ellen Keathley, 26, were arrested after an incident at Banana Joe's in the city's Channelside district at 2:10 a.m. One cheerleader was charged with battery, the other with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The police report claims the two cheerleaders were having sex with each other in a stall at the bar when other patrons got angry they were taking so long in the bathroom.

Owen and another person started arguing and Owen hit that person in the face, according to the report. Keathley was escorted from Banana Joe's and the police report said she was so drunk she could barely stand and described her as rude and belligerent with police.

Other Panthers cheerleaders bailed Owen and Keathley out of the Orient Road Jail late Sunday morning.

The cheerleaders made the trip to Tampa on their own. Cheerleaders are on the sidelines only at home games. Team officials at Sunday afternoon's game said they were aware of the report, but declined further comment.

Eleven hours before kickoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two Carolina Panthers cheerleaders were arrested for an incident that took place after they had sex with each other in a bathroom stall, records claim. One was charged with battery, the other disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Fellow Panthers cheerleaders, who were bailing them out from Orient Road Jail late Sunday morning, would not comment.

Witnesses say the incident began 2:10 a.m. Sunday when the two cheerleaders were having sex in a stall at Banana Joe's in Channelside when patrons got angry they were taking so long in the bathroom, an arrest report shows.

The Tampa Tribune is withholding the names of the cheerleaders because of a potential identity issue. Police reports contained names of cheerleaders, but officials are checking into whether one of them gave a false identification.

The cheerleaders left the stall, according to reports. Owen and another person started arguing, and Owen struck that person in the face with a closed fist,according to the report.

One of the cheerleaders was escorted from Banana Joe's. So drunk she could barely stand, she was ``rude and belligerent,'' using foul language and being uncooperative to police, the report shows.

A crowd gathered.

Police tried arresting her, but she refused to place her hands behind her back and struggled with an officer trying to place handcuffs on her wrists, the report says.

Kristen Owen, daughter of Kim and Renee Owen of Charlotte and granddaughter of T. J. and Jacque Owen of Elizabethtown, has been selected to the "Top Cats," the squad of cheerleaders for the Carolina Panthers football team.

The selection concluded 10 days of intense auditioning which began on March 12 with approximately 200 women trying out for the squad. Preliminary auditions were based on dance skills, physical fitness, presentation and showmanship. Semifinals consisted of performing a dance routine taught by Top Cats choreographer, Nicole Price.

"While we are looking for squad members who have a passion for the Carolina Panthers and the game of football, being a Top Cat involves more than just cheering on the sidelines," said Tina Dietrich, the Carolina Panthers' cheerleading program manager. "They must also have the personality and poise to serve as ambassadors for our organization in the community."

Kristen and her entire family have a passion for the Carolina Panthers and the game of football. Her father, Kim, played college football at Appalachian State University, and her grandfather, affectionately called "Pawi" by Kristen, coached high school football for 30 years.

All finalists participated in an interview with the Top Cats' staff and attended rehearsals prior to finals. They addressed a panel of judges and answered one philosophical question before performing an intricate dance routine.

The age range for the Top Cats is from 18 to 30. Top Cat squad members work in a variety of professions ranging from banking to engineering to teaching to law.

Kristen graduated cum laude on May 14 from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Theatre. She is presently doing television commercials for several automobile dealerships and for Pizza Hut in Charlotte. She also plans to participate in the Miss North Carolina pageant this fall.

After a short break, she plans to return to school to pursue a post-graduate degree.

Alleged Panthers Cheerleader Brawl Sparks Mystery
Panthers Cheerleader Victim of Alleged Mistaken Identity in Florida Altercation

Nov. 7, 2005 — - A weekend bar brawl involving a cheerleader for the Carolina Panthers has sparked charges and questions over an apparent mistaken identity.

Panther cheerleader Angela Keathley, 26, and another woman whose identity remains a mystery to police face charges for a bar brawl at Banana Joe's in Tampa, Fla., early Sunday. Police arrested Keathley and another woman who identified herself as fellow cheerleader Kristen Owen after authorities said they got into an argument in the bathroom at the bar.

Police said the woman who identified herself as Owen gave the authorities the cheerleader's address. But according to her parents, Owen -- a first-year cheerleader and recent college graduate --was not even in Florida at the time of the altercation.

"She was out of town in Columbia, South Carolina, at a wedding," Renee Owen, Kristen's mother, told ABC News affiliate WFTS in Tampa. "She did not go to Tampa this weekend."

Complaints About Alleged Bathroom Sex
The events that led to the arrests began when bar patrons complained that two women were engaging in sex and tying up a bathroom stall. Police said "Owen" punched Keathley in the face and was charged with battery. Keathly was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

"There had been a physical altercation between one lady and another bar patron, all over the use of a stall or something that happened in the bathroom," said Tampa Police Lt. John Newman. "According to the report, there was quote, unquote some sort of sexual activity going on in the stall."

Authorities first learned that the woman was not really Owen after she posted bond. Police said they will try to identify the mystery woman with fingerprints and help from the NFL today.

Meanwhile, the Owen family says they may file a defamation lawsuit against the unidentified woman.

Two Carolina Panthers cheerleaders were charged after their arrest at a bar where witnesses told police the women had sex in a restroom.

Renee Thomas, 20, of Pittsboro, N.C., and Angela Keathley, 26, of Belmont, N.C., were taken to Hillsborough County Jail early Sunday.

Witnesses said the women were having sex in a stall with each other, angering patrons waiting in line to get into the restroom at the club in the Channelside district.

Thomas was charged with battery Sunday after allegedly striking a bar patron when she was leaving the restroom, then landed in even more trouble after police said she gave officers a driver's license belonging to another Panthers cheerleader who was not in Tampa.

Thomas, who made the trip to Florida for Sunday's game between the Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was released from jail on $500 bail before police learned she was not the person she claimed to be.

Providing police with a false name is a misdemeanor. However, Thomas was charged Monday with giving a false name and causing harm to another _ a third-degree felony punishable by probation or a jail term of 1 to 5 years, said police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

Meanwhile, detectives are trying to determine how Thomas gained possession of the driver's license of the third cheerleader.


Keathley, charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, was released on $750 bail about an hour before the Panthers played the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium. The cheerleaders were not in town to perform at the game.

According to a police report obtained by the CBS TV affiliate in Tampa and the Charlotte Observer, Angela Ellen Keathley and Renee Thomas were arrested following an incident at Banana Joe's, in Tampa's Channelside district, at 2:10 a.m. ET.

The cheerleaders were kicked off the team Monday for violating a signed code of conduct, Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton said. The two violated a rule that bans conduct that's embarrassing to the team or organization.

In the police report, witnesses claimed Thomas and Keathley were having sex with each other in a stall when other patrons grew angry that the two were taking so long in the bathroom.

Another woman waiting to use the bathroom got into an argument with the two, and Thomas hit that person in the face, according to details of the report posted on TampaBay10.com, the CBS TV affiliate's Web site.

Keathley, who was escorted from the nightclub, was so drunk she could barely stand, the report said. Police described Keathley as rude and belligerent with police.

When Thomas was arrested, she gave police the name of another Panthers cheerleader -- Kristen Lanier Owen, the Observer and TampaBay10.com reported. Thomas, who was charged with one count of battery, might face additional charges for lying to police, once they confirm her identity.

Keathley was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing or opposing an officer.

Other Panthers cheerleaders bailed Thomas and Keathley out of Hillsborough County jail later Sunday morning, TampaBay10.com reported.

The cheerleaders made the trip to Tampa on their own -- the squad performs on the sideline only at home games. Panthers officials at Sunday afternoon's game said they were aware of the report, but declined further comment when contacted by the Observer.

According to the Panthers' official team Web site on NFL.com, Keathley is a registered nurse and second-year member of the TopCats. Thomas is listed as a student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and first-year member of the cheerleading squad.

Keathley, charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, was released on $750 bail about an hour before the Panthers played the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium. The cheerleaders were not in town to perform at the game.

I encourage the Chiefs get these cheerleaders (or many of their own) to perform in this manner on the field during halftime and TV time-outs.
