I hate to help with the hijacking of a good thread, but Costner's best role was in "Wyatt Earp". It's overshadowed by the Bubble gum-ish "Tombstone," but it is a great movie and he does a perfect job of playing Earp through his life.

True story: I was at the gym earlier this year just before Episode 3 came out and saw Hayden at the gym. I'll pretty much talk to anyone, especially when they ask for a spot. But I was speechless. I couldn't care less about his range, I've enjoyed watching a lot of his movies, same with Nicholas Cage, he has no range either but I've enjoyed a lot of his movies.....the purpose of a movie is to enjoy it, if you don't like the movie because the actor doesn't have range than that's a bad reason to dislike it....unless he is trying to act past his range and does poorly at it

Are you speaking of the guy who played the guy who went through a wormhole to another planet with the guy who is married to the actress that starred with him in the movie where she got amnesia?

Or are you talking about the guy who was in the movie about Guadalcanal with the guy who played the mentally retarded guy in the movie where he wants custody of his son?

FAX THE SOMEWHAT CONFUSED AGAIN

I'm talking about the former. He was also in that movie with the woman whois now one of the hottest (in all senses of the word) actresses in Hollywood before she made it big in which she was dressed in a very skimpy lace thingy in bed in which he ripped it off her. Costarring in that movie was the guy who was in the movie in which he was engaged to a character played by a singer from the 70s, 80s and 90s, who fell in love with his character's brother, who had a wooden hand and was played by the guy who went on to star in the movie about alcatraz, also starring the guy who used to be James Bond.

Okay, I know I'm probably going to get skewered and burned for heresy for saying this ... but ...

Hugely popular, hero to millions, American pop culture icon ...

... without an ounce of acting talent:

John Wayne
(or Elvis Presley, take your pick)

You've never seen The Searchers or True Grit, have you?

Not to say that he was a great actor, but to say he had no acting talent is assanine.

Hayden Christensen, by far. Single-handedly ruined what could have been "salvagable" Star Wars movies. Horrible in "Life as a House". Horrible in everything. More wooden than Bill Pullman.
Haven't seen "Life as a House" but I agree. Even in the last, and best, new Star Wars... he was really bad, IMO.

I really like most of his stuff. Some of his recent good ones have been the one about the speed junkies, the one about the guy with the large package, and the one about the kidnapped president's daughter.

I enjoy the one where he is a bridge builder in Africa and is forced to deal with a couple of nasty lions.

I always forget about that one. Good flick.

Yes, to both, and neither served to sway my opinion. If anything, his acting in True Grit reinforced it.

The reason he won the Oscar for True Grit is because he played something different than usual. Granted, his acting in that was not on the same level as in The Searchers (the one he really should have won it for), but it was not his typical role. And The Searchers, well, I can't think of anyone that could have played that role any better than he did. And that certainly was not a typical Duke role, it was darker and more serious than the characters he usually portrayed.

Of course my old man would say that, "The knock on John Wayne was that he only played John Wayne, but nobody played John Wayne better."

Yeah, he had a few departures from his more stereotypical characters. What I think made him (or appeared to) a great actor was that rather than the writer's writing a movie, then casting John Wayne, so that he had to modify and conform to the characters that were written, they instead began with the idea of John Wayne as the lead role, and wrote the characters and stories to fit his acting style and personality.

I always thought Wayne's best performance was his last - The Shootist. Probably my favorite John Wayne movie, too.

That was certainly the case some times, but not always.

I was entertained by Varsity Blues, and even Fast and the Furious.
... any movie with a whipped cream bikini has entertainment value.
But you are right, he is awful.

hehe enjoyed both of the Fast and Furious movies. But he does suck. There are a lot more memorable characters in Varsity Blues though.

That one gets a special mention. His performance was better in that than in a good deal of his films. Of course I have a certain prejudice towards the film given that he plays a man dying of cancer, and in real life he would do just that not long after. So there is an emotional side to it (or at least there is for someone who views The Duke as a hero). Of course, that didn't exist to the level it does now that he has passed away, and even were it not for that, it would still be a great film. I have to put it into my top 5 favorites for sure, maybe top 3, depends on what day it is with me.

I think that guy who played Batman once, and played a blind guy, who recovers his sight for a brief time.. is a really stone-faced, boring actor.

Except for the time he played Doc Holliday, which was brilliant.

He was in a movie with a guy who was in another movie trying to get a guy to join up in some spy stuff, but the movie had alot of twists. The guy that guy was trying to get to join up was in a weird movie where he was on the phone throughout the whole movie. The guy that guy was talking to kicks ass.

No doubt. Wins by a freaking mile. He's so bad that it's a standing joke among just about everybody how bad he is.

Bad acting aside, he was wise enough to take a cut on the profits of Matrix, making him top 5 in wealthiest Hollywood scum. MOst of the other top 5 are listed in this thread.

BEN AFFLECK

I have promised myself never to watch another movie he appears in in a major or semi-major role.
Couldn't agree more.

I also think Jack Nicholson sucks as an actor. He's talks the same way, uses the same facial expressions, same basic demeanor in no matter what role he's playing.

Thought he did a decent job in the one where he was the hotshot reporter who was making everything up, the one that co-starred the girl who got raped by Casper while passed out, and later made some mouth love on that one dude's junk, the one who hates Roger Ebert. Also co-starring the guy who's presently training the guy who loves the Corps, huah!!
