Savannah State beats Wilberforce to end long skid
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Savannah State snapped a 65-game losing streak Friday night, beating Wilberforce 63-59 in its season opener.
The Tigers finished 0-28 last season and were the second winless NCAA Division I team in the last half-century. Savannah State joined Prairie View, which went 0-28 in 1991-92.
Savannah State was 4-24 two years ago, but the Tigers had to forfeit the victories because they used an ineligible player. Their last victory that counted came against Bethune-Cookman, 60-50, on Jan. 22, 2003.
The NAIA Bulldogs (1-1) took a 54-51 lead with 2:19 left in the game on a layup by Dwight Cass.
But Savannah State (1-0) responded with a 12-1 run in which Joseph Flegler scored six points and Javon Randolph (20 points) added five -- all on free throws.
John Brideway led Wilberforce with 10 points.
