I fail to see a good rationale for a division winner getting a home game over a wild card team. I think that that the first round games should be seeded according to record.
For example, consider the following situation.
Division Winners:
Buffalo 14-2
Cleveland 11-5
Jacksonville 10-6
Kansas City 16-0
Wild Cards
New York Jets 12-4
Houston 10-6
The current situation would have KC and Buffalo on byes, while Cleveland hosts Houston and Jacksonville hosts the Jets.
I propose that first-round seedings should be based on record, with the division winner automatically winning the tiebreaker. So the actual first-round games should have the Jets hosting Houston, and Cleveland hosting Jacksonville. What do you think?
