Panthers release veteran wide receiver Gardner
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers on Friday released wide receiver Rod Gardner, who disappointed after being acquired from Washington in a July trade.
The former first-round draft pick of the Redskins had just nine receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown through the first 13 games of the season.
"It was a situation where there are other receivers ahead of him on the depth chart and it became fairly apparent to us that he would not be in our long-term plans," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said. "We felt like this was the right opportunity to give Rod a chance to catch on with another team."
Even with No. 2 wide receiver Keary Colbert struggling, Gardner failed to make an impact during his time with the Panthers and never displaced Ricky Proehl as the team's No. 3 wideout.
The Panthers replaced Gardner on their roster by signing fullback Casey Cramer from the practice squad.
