If a CB is running toward his endzone in coverage, and intercepts the ball on, say, the two yeard line, and his big momentum carries him into the endzone, what is the result? Possession on the two?

Demonpenz
12-19-2005, 01:52 AM
you get on the two or whatever the forward progres was .

HMc

I think the result better be him running out of the endzone before he gets tackled.

So it'd be a safety if he got cleaned up in the endzone?

HMc

So, extending the logic, if the same thing happened on the 50, and he ran back to the 40 and got tackled there, they would get the ball on the 50?

HMc

EDIT: post referred to luv2rite's which was suggesting the result might be touchback.

I thought that might be the case, but then you're giving the CB an incentive to run into the endzone when he doesn't really need to. Unless the refs subjectively judge whether it was his momentum or his choice to run in.

no you said his momentum carried him in. if you intercept a ball at the 50 and fall back to the 48 you get it on the 50

Okay, I'm gonna be brave and say no, it would be on the 40.

What is it about a touchback? Something about going back to the 20 yard line.

If he runs it in on his own free will, don't they get it on the goal line then?

Yeah, when i said "run" i meant run as in momentum. Imagine the guy is doing his 4.4 40 yard dash toward his own goal line in coverage, then gets the pick. Well if he's at the one or two, he's going into the endzone whether he likes it or not.

I think you've answered the question.

Demonpenz

eh they might give you the touchback.

It's not going to be a touchback unless he takes possession in the endzone. Now, if he's airborne, catches the ball, and lands in the endzone... I would assume that's a touchback. But, if you're on the ground, grab the ball, and run into the endzone... I think you'd better get the f*ck out.

But, like I said... don't take my word for it. I'm barely better than a girl when it comes to this stuff. I came here to learn... and stayed because they didn't kick me out.
But if he runs it in due to not being able to stop foward momentum, wouldn't it be the same thing? Is there a certain way to judge, like more than two steps and it's not foward momentum, or is it up to the refs?

Okay cool. I meant your latter example - taking a pick on the run (like at full throttle) at your 1 or 2, towards your own line. What would you do? You can't stop in one yard, it isn't possible. Maybe you just don't take the pick.

I think if it is determined that his momentum carried him into the end zone then it would be a touch back. However, I'm not certain.

HMc

Who gives a shit about his forward momentum? The man took posession of the ball in the field of play. He better find a way to turn around in two yards time.

So you'd bat the ball away and not take the pick? Cos you aren't stopping in two yards.

Or toss it back to someone before getting in the endzone. That happened during the Denver game at home didn't it? I remember asking dad what it was about. I can't remember where they ended up at. The refs did say he was down in the endzone before passing it back though.

HMc

I think you take the pick and turn and run like hell.

You mean into the endzone and out again? Or doing the U turn in 2 yards?

If guys can turn from full speed in two yards then they need to be teaching the wide recievers who have trouble even planting two feet in two yards to make catches on the sidelines or in the endzone.

What's really funny about this thread is I bet if this happened in a game, the "professional" announcers would flip flop more than this conversation has.
You're definitely right about that. Another good thing about this thread...I actually could contribute to it! :)

I'm pretty sure it's possesion on the 2. About 5 years ago in a Raiders Seahawks game a Raider player intercepted a ball and his momentum carried him into the endzone and it was called a safety. Seattle ended up getting the ball back because of that and winning by a point I believe.

The rule was changed after the season.

Examples of Non-Safety:

(a) Player intercepts a pass with both feet inbounds in the field of play and his momentum carries him into his own end zone. Ball is put in play at spot of interception.
