James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead at 1:30 a.m. ET Thursday in his apartment in Lutz, Fla., a suburb of Tampa, Debbie Carter, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Thursday.

A death investigation is under way, and the spokesperson said that the county medical examiner's office or the hospital at which James Dungy was pronounced dead would have a ruling on the cause of death.

James Dungy officially was pronounced dead this morning at University Community Hospital in Tampa.

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa. Indianapolis plays at Seattle this Saturday.

Awful how life can change in an instant like that. A lot of us know the experience. Those of us with children can only imagine the horror.

Tony's such a good guy.

As for football, maybe the Colts being in cruise mode will make it that much easier for him to take the time off that he needs to deal with this.

Wow, what a shock. I, too, think Indy has to win it all now and dedicate it to his son, although I'm sure Dungy would give up his whole football career not to lose his son. Condolences to his family. :(

I saw a special on him, his son and the Lynch family. Tony's son used to live with John Lynch and his wife when his dad left Tampa to coach Indy. Lynch was also James' godfather and it turns out he's actually a decent guy off the field.

Dumb and dumberSo is there a thread posted here everytime someone's child dies?

The only reason this is news to any of us is because of the link to the NFL. Deberg makes a comment in relation to that link, and every goes up in arms. There was nothing offensive about what he said, especially considering the fact that no one here has any ties to the deceased.

I just think you guys are trying too hard to catch someone saying the wrong thing, and looking for something to feign outrage over.

Too many people on this board like to get there labias all twisted up over shit like this. They act like this is HumanCompassionPlanet. Then next week, half the people that are outraged with be taking rude pot shots at at someone for having a differing opinion on football. Or making some stupid comment about hurricane Katrina cleaning up the gene pool.

Indeed. Everything I've heard or read talks about how he's all class.

His greatest professional achievement will forever be tainted by the memory of losing his son. I don't know how he's going to take care of his family, arrangements, and still be able to prepare this team for a super bowl run.

Sad.The only thing that matters is how the important people react. Tony Dungy doesn't know or care how we are reacting. He's got more real life issues than worrying about if some football BB is showing the proper amount of compassion.

James, 18, found in apartment; assistant Caldwell takes over Colts for now

TAMPA, Fla. - James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead of an apparent suicide early Thursday, the sheriff’s office said.

James Dungy’s girlfriend found him when she returned to the Campus Lodge Apartments at about 1:30 a.m., Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

“Based on evidence at the scene, indications are that this death appears to be a suicide,” Carter said. She said an autopsy was pending.

You can forget about ever seeing that back up on the web. It went from, "This profile is undergoing routine maintenance. We apologize for the inconvenience!" to "Invalid Friend ID. This user has either cancelled their membership, or their acccount has been deleted."

Just as well. It was very troubling to his family, I'm sure.

James Dungy was probably rebellious or something.

I really hope it wasn't a suicide.

"Based on evidence at the scene, indications are that this death appears to be a suicide," Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. "There is no evidence to contradict that at this time." Police said there was no note found.

Yeah, I knew it was likely a suicide, but I was just hoping they found some evidence to where it wasn't. I can't believe Dungy's kid did that. He must have been going through a lot that no one knew about or something. Very sad. Dungy is great people.

A reporter on the radio said he hanged himself and that some troubling details, which he declined to spell out, are going to become public. Maybe that's the stuff you guys saw at myspace.

I am so sorry for Tony Dungy.........Loosing a child is more than most parents can deal with, but a suicde would be worse IMO. My prayers are with him and his family.

This is horrible news.

My folks and I used to be neighbors with the Dungy family back when Tony was here with the Chiefs. We were all close friends, and I'm sure my parents will react with as much shock as I just received when I read the title of this thread.

From your old friend and neighbor, condolences for the untimely loss of James.

Just a bunch of wannabe gangsta stuff, a lot of marijuana and gang-related pics. Nothing too serious on the surface, but now....

The MySpace page had a Randy Moss background. James' face was covered by a black bandanna.
The mouse pointer was a pistol.
Had about 6 or 7 different logos related to pot: Stoned Mickey Mouse, Adidas pot logo, etc.
Some gang (Bloods??) related hand signal logos.
A bunch of rapper stuff.
FU in several places.
Personal stuff: born in Pittburgh, 6'-7", religion: Christian:other
A few notes from some friends, about the most revealing was "I haven't seen you in forever"
The site looked pretty new, maybe a month old, but maybe a half dozen friends shown. At least 3-4 hot chicks.
Some race related references.
Some references to football, but none to his dad.
Screen name: Dungy, several friends called him James.

Really sad. RIP James Dungy.

This really is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. Not just because he was Dungy's son, but anyone deciding to commit suicide this time of the year is extremely sad. Why would anyone want to do something like this to his or her family? Committing suicide is hard enough on families and friends, but like others have already said, this will ruin all of their future christmas' and if the colts go on to win the SB, this will always be the first thing Tony thinks about, not his team's enormous accomplishments. Doing something like this at this time is incredibly selfish. I'm really hoping that more evidence comes out to indicate it was something other than suicide, because I just can't imagine why anyone would want to do this to their family at this time of the year. Just so sad.

Teenagers are by nature selfish and stupid. Sometimes, sadly, that can be fatal.

Yep he wanted it to hurt his family. Merry Christmas Mom and Dad-bang!

I don't like Dungy but I would never wish this on anyone-it would be a loss I could never overcome-let alone continue to coach a Pro team.
