I am over it, but you cannot tell me that comment makes any sense. Teams have to be able to pass as well as run to win games, and you know it. Why stick up for an idiotic remark?

but before
I went to a baptist church
one thing we were always asked
"who wants to go to heaven"
everyone raised their hands
"who really wants to go to heaven"
every raised 2 hands
"who wants to die"
everyone put their hands down
its called sacrifice
its called being commited to something
thats what makes you a better man
you have to give up something to get something in this world
theres a difference between commitment and convenience.
thats why we have 7-11s
i'm not a convenience sort of guy
i want commitment
people want it easy
life is not convenient
its about the guys that are commited

I know it's hard to believe but that is historically and factually accurate. When Vermeil first came to the Chiefs I was amazed at how many people weren't aware of Vermeil's legacy with the Eagles. In short, he played Martyball before Marty invented Martyball.

Wow... that just reeks of play not to lose.

Looking at the stats

2004 Jets

Runs attempted 527
Passes attempted 438

2005 Jets

Runs attempted 384
Passes attempted 470

2004 Chiefs

Runs attempted 496
Passes attempted 561

2005 Chiefs

Runs attempted 520
Passes attempted 507

What I see here are the same tendencies...winning teams (2005 chiefs, 2004 jets) are more apt to run than pass. Losing teams are just the opposite.

I think the most telling stat is that the 2004 Jets and the 2005 Chiefs had nearly the same number of runs attempted.

Wow... that just reeks of play not to lose.
That just reeks of "taking one comment and blowing it up".

Running the football in the 4th quarter does not necessarily equal "play not to lose". Look at that 2nd Denver game... we threw the ball, threw the ball, loosened them up, then in the 4th quarter LJ ran all over them and finished the job. We weren't playing to lose then.

Of course that comment reeks of playing not to lose. That's why it's imperative that Herm Edwards has the same type of arrangement that Dungy does Indy. It doesn't mean that we are destined to lose this offense, but it does mean that left to his own devices, Herm would build a Martyball team, just as Dungy would. It's Carl's job to make sure that doesn't happen.

I'm a supporter, don't get me wrong. I'm in his camp now. But... I guess I wasn't used to a rambling, at times downright strange press conference like that. If I had never heard of Edwards before today and heard the press conference, I don't think I would have been impressed.

Haha... you people are great. If you run the football at the end of the game, it's playing not to lose. If you throw the football you're being too "cute".

Here's how it works... and this is exactly what Herm said today. If you win, you did it right, if you lose, everybody criticizes you. That's how it works. Look at how many people rode Al for throwing late in the first half of the Dallas game, or called this play or that play too cute, there are a billion examples of this. But I guarantee you that if we get in that same situation next year and Herm runs it three times and we have to kick a FG, then he's playing too conservative. There is no right answer, except to win.

Haha... you people are great. If you run the football at the end of the game, it's playing not to lose. If you throw the football you're being too "cute".

Exactly...

I don't think coaches, coordinators, quarterbacks, running backs, game situations, or anything else matters - the play calling will always be reviled.

I'm guessing by the "teach the players to play defense" comments that Gunther is gone now?

Haha... you people are great.

You find a single time where I have ever criticized us for throwing the football.

When Vermeil got here he made a point that we were not going to try to let it come down to one play. That we were going to be aggressive on offense. That's obviously not Herm's way. DV's initial press conference was all about being aggressive on offensive. We need to make sure we don't lose that DV-AS mentality on offense, which is the reason why Herm needs to be Dungy'ed. That doesn't mean that Herm is going to suck as a HC, it means that we need to try to max. Herm's positives and minimize his negatives, just like the Colts have done with Dungy.

His philosophy for KC is... Win. Win by scoring points and not letting them score points.

Brilliant (cue commercial)

Now ... NOW ... I see why KC wants him.

A. Teicher: "What will you say to your players the first time you meet with them?

Herm: "Well, you're not going to be there because you're not invited, so I'm not going to tell you. The players can tell you if they want, but I'm not telling you."

I'm a supporter, don't get me wrong. I'm in his camp now. But... I guess I wasn't used to a rambling, at times downright strange press conference like that. If I had never heard of Edwards before today and heard the press conference, I don't think I would have been impressed. You have evidently forgotten Gunther as head coach, no one worse in press conferences IMO than Gun as far as HC's or former HC's in the NFL.

i thought he did a good job. i'm 100% behind him. anybody watch the comments on espnews? they think there is more pressure for him to win here than in new york.Yep, they have the Yankees to fall back on. In KC, the Chiefs are the only game in town.

That just reeks of "taking one comment and blowing it up".

Isn't that what this place is for? :p

I know what he's saying... it's obviously not going to be 90% pass until we get a lead and then 100% run after that.... and if LJ keeps his 5 or 6 yards a carry next year, we could just run it all the time anyway. ;) It's just a bit different hearing it from Herm, as opposed to all the conservative banter Jets fans have been spewing.

Besides, I haven't believed anything a coach has said since "the Big 12 is a running school, so we aren't going to change how you win games in the Big 12."

When you're Herm and perhaps don't like risk, it's easier to fall into the trap of doing too little, and when you're Al and you're always trying to keep the other team guessing, it's hard not to get too cute.

I'm not trying to crucify the guy on his first day.... it just stuck out to me. Of course we're all going to criticize the playcalling..... after all, we could all do their jobs ;)

"If you're going to WIN championships..you've got to have Championship defense"
"every team I've ever coached has had good defense"

"you pass to score, run to win..but you HAVE TO PLAY DEFENSE"

"
You have to score early, control the game with the run and play defense"

Oh god my worst fears! Marty has returned!

Having finally listened to the press conference, I just have to laugh.

Herm is a football coach. He said all the things that football coaches say.

To say he was rambling, or somehow not articulate, is to forget the sometimes mystifying ramblings of Dick Vermeil, or worse, the insanity of Gunther Cunningham...

Herm is first and foremost a motivator. At least the players buy into his ramblings, they certainly can't buy into his coaching acumen.
