Brighton line up deal for Rodman
Brighton Bears have confirmed they are in negotiations to sign 44-year-old former Chicago Bulls legend Dennis Rodman on a short-term deal.
Rodman is in Britain for the Celebrity Big Brother television show and the Bears have spoken to his agents.
"There is a very real chance this could happen," said Bears coach Nick Nurse.
"Most people here only know him for his lifestyle but he's probably the best defensive player the world's seen over the past 20 years."
In a 14-year NBA career, Rodman won two championships with Detroit and three with the Chicago Bulls.
"The Bulls team he played on was probably the greatest in basketball history and, after Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, he was the third most important player on that team," said Nurse.
"This will be seen as a publicity stunt and, yes, we want to attract people who might not ordinarily be basketball fans.
"But the main reason for doing this is to give basketball fans the chance to see one of the all-time great players playing here in the BBL."
Rodman led the NBA in rebounding for a record seven straight years and was twice voted the best defensive player in the league.
His last NBA appearance was for Dallas Mavericks in 2000, but since then he has played in several minor leagues, most recently playing in a one-off game in Finland in November.
Depending upon how long he lasts in the Big Brother house, and the success of Brighton's negotiations, Rodman could be in line to make his Bears debut against Milton Keynes Lions (21 January), Guildford Heat (28 January) or Birmingham Bullets (2 February).
