View Full Version : This could be bad news for Denver..

As noted a while back, the last five Super Bowl winners ranked among the NFL's top four in red-zone defense. None of the other statistical categories on either side of the ball produced that kind of uniformity when looking at recent Super Bowl winners. I have entered the numbers into an Excel file and sorted for more than 15 categories on each side of the ball.

Red-zone defense rankings of remaining playoff teams: Seattle (2), Carolina (3), Pittsburgh (10) and Denver (28).

A look at recent Super Bowl winners and where they ranked in this category:

2004 Patriots (3rd)
2003 Patriots (4th)
2002 Bucs (1st)
2001 Patriots (3rd)
2000 Ravens (2nd)
1998 Broncos (3rd)
1997 Broncos (10th)
1999 Rams (23rd)

Note that the 1998 Falcons ranked sixth in red-zone defense, only to lose to a Denver team that ranked third. The 2004 Eagles ranked eighth and lost to a New England team that ranked third. The 1997 Packers ranked ninth and lost to a Denver team that ranked 10th. Those 1999 Rams prevailed with a No. 23 ranking, perhaps in part because Tennessee ranked 20th that season. - Mike Sando Tacoma News Tribune

For the last 10 years (*minus 2003) the winner of the AFC Championship game lost to miami in the regular season

*2003 patriots beat Miami twice

Interesting.

You think Jerome Bettis has had that little factoid ran past him this week?

Those are some interesting numbers.

They did show up last week though, that was the play of the game, Champ's INT in the red zone.

What I want to know, is how healthy is your boy Alexander?

Where is the spin on this, Donkos?

You can't have a good defense with a lousy red zone performance.

He's supposedly 100% normal right now.. He needs a good game or he could get tagged as a wuss..

Alexander affirms his readiness for Sunday | Subscribe

Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander practiced again today, leaving little doubt about his availability for the NFC title game Sunday. The concussion he suffered last week appears to be causing no problems.

"I’m feeling a lot better," Alexander said today after practice. "Every day I get a little bit better and it’s exciting."

In other news, Seattle continued to practice without WR Bobby Engram, WR Darrell Jackson and DT Rocky Bernard. Each remained "questionable" on the injury report.

Impossible. Taco just told me earlier today that Denver's red zone defense is why they win games.

Guess who is on the cover of this weeks SI?

None other than Jake the Fake! :D

I don't remember ever making that claim. Got a link?

I remember saying that our TEAM is why we win games. I believe we've got the best all around TEAM in the league.

They must be regional then. I can't find a picture of it, but the Plummer one says the same thing, "Stepping Up Under Pressure".

I suppose there's a Jake Delhomme cover somewhere with the same caption.

Regional covers.... what a great way to try and beat the curse! Now if all of them suffer a Carson Palmer type injury in the 1st quarter... enter Rod Sterling... dee dee dee dee... dee dee dee dee...

Actually, it keeps the curse alive indefinitely. Whoever loses will blame SI anyway.

Joe, I gotta hand it to you. Your boys did a great job this year and I am happy for you. Your team deserves to be in the SB.

he sounds like he's in game mode already. I love it. The one time I went to Arrowhead to watch the boys was one of the best days of my life.... and we lost to the Texans nonetheless. I couldn't imagine watching them in the BIG game. Unreal. I almost want to root for Seattle...just for Joe. But I have money on the BUS and the Steelers.

I'm pulling to double up from last weekends earnings. And... I'm going to my uncle's for a super bowl party and he's a die-hard Steelers fan, so that also sways my vote for Pitts. If the chiefs were in there... I sure as hell wouldn't be letting people in my house who were rooting for the opposing team.

The claim above is totally BOGUS. If they were the best all around team in the league they would be representing the AFC in the SB.

I don't remember who the AFC has in the SB other than to say that I'm sure it's NOT denver.
