EAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) - A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam, for wearing a Broncos jersey.

The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday -- two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a "stinking Denver fan," Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.

The incident occurred in Kelly's ethnicity class. Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.

"If he felt uncomfortable, then that's a lesson; that's what (the class) is designed to do," Kelly told The Denver Post. "It was silly fun. I can't believe he was upset."

Vannoy was wearing a No. 7 Broncos jersey on Friday, because he is a fan of John Elway, the Broncos' retired Hall of Fame quarterback.

Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test, and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.

"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks (school quarters) and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."

Kelly, who wore a Ben Roethlisberger jersey Friday, and his principal, Thomas Karczewski, didn't immediately return messages left on their school voice mail Monday.

Big Beaver Falls Area School District Superintendent Donna Nugent said she was aware of the situation, but said confidentiality rules prevent her from commenting specifically.

"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.

"I think stripping him down, smearing him with vaseline and stringing him up to the football goalposts will be appropriate," she added.

Gee I wonder what's gonna happen if I wear an opposing team's Jersey into a School full of Steeler fans right before the big game?? duhhhhhh. Prevent the confrontation before it starts and don't wear the damn thing unless you're prepared to take some abuse. Just because a teacher gave you some sh** and you can get him in trouble for it doesn't mean you do. That just means the students will give you MORE sh** later.

Yep, should have never happend. Teacher needs to be punished. This has nothing to do with what kinda team fan he was, it had to do with the teacher singling someone out. A teacher tried to do that shit to me once in high school. I told em **** you, and i walked outta his class, i got busted for it, but i wasnt going to let him show me up. After that, teacher never ****ed with me agian.

OH MY GOD A TEACHER MADE HIM SIT ON THE FLOOR?? Heaven forbid.

In High School the coolest teachers I had were those that actually did stuff like this. We had one guy who once took two days out of class to teach us how to play craps. He also routinely would pick students up out of their chairs and even wrestled a couple who decided to make some snide comments in class. He singled students out every day but he did it in funny ways. He made it a point to single you out if you sucked on an assignment or had a dumb answer to a question.

Everyone in the class did well because we didn't want to be the target of his heckling. It's not the same thing here but then again no one was ever dumb enough to wear an Elway jersey right before the Chiefs-Broncos game.

He would have done something a lot worse than this I guarantee it.

This kid is just a crybaby, plain and simple.

It's all about choices, Mr. kcxiv.

First, never allow your child to enter a room full of poop fans wearing a DT jersey unescorted.

Second, one is attending school to learn - not antagonize the educators regardless of their team affiliation.

Third, donkey kids have learned to cheat on tests from their heros, so, this is merely another example of ironical justice at work in the world.

I used to get paddled with a wood paddle with holes drilled in it by our shop teacher whenever the wild hair got up his butt.

My Principal used to whack my knuckes with a wood ruler for doing stuff in elementary school.

I think we have gone way to far to the easy side of the street. My kids are nowhere near as adventurous as I was when I was a kid. Even though I try to prod them along, the village side of the street is always making it harder on me and easier on them.

Truth of the matter is, don't wear the jersey unless you are willing to put up with the hazing.

Teacher may have been a bit out of line by todays standards, but by no means was the kid abused. He should have proudly taken it.

Whenever it was time for the paddle, any of us that had it coming lined up and bent over like the juvenile delinquents we were.

A few points:

A 17-year-old high school student...a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School...
Isn't he a bit old to be a Junior?
The incident occurred in Kelly's ethnicity class.
A f**king ETHNICITY class? WTF? Is that a joke?
Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.
Duh. He's a Donkey fan who's a 17 year old Junior. Of course he didn't get it.
Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test...
Something tells me stupidy might have something to do with why he left some things incomplete.
and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.
And how did that happen you enormous cooter?
"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks (school quarters) and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."
Oh, so you're not scared, you're pissed. You could have started by taking it like a man.
"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.
Some Monistat will stop the kid's itching.

Not trying to be funny, but honestly, this kid got off light.

1) The kid is obviously an idiot if he thought he could walk into school (in Penn) wearing a Broncos jersey the Friday before the AFC Champ Game and not catch some grief.

2) He's extremely lucky one of his peers didn't take action. Kids can be cruel, to say the least. I grew up in STL, and remember this kid that transfered to my school the Monday after the Cardinals swept the Cubs in a weekend series. Dude shows up wearing a Cubbies jersey and talking smack.....I think we all know what happened.

3) Kid was in a class on Ethnicity. If the kid wasn't such a pansy-ass, he might have learned the lesson the teacher was trying to teach the class....How we as a society tend to treat people like garbage just because they look, talk or act different, or have different beliefs.

Chalk this one up as a whiny-ass :deevee: kid looking for some attention.

My nickname in school was Chiefman because on an elevated campus you could see my fat ass wearing my Chiefs parka all the way from the other side of the school. This was in the height of Seattle doing well in the AFC West. I took shit from students, teachers, bus drivers, dorks, geeks, chicks, cafeteria workers, janitors, and librarians. So I have every right to say, dude you are a F*CKING PUSS. Man up. Have some pride in the fact that your team sparks enough concern in other folks enough for them to buck up and talk some shit. I expect nothing less from a Donko fan.

He never actually beat anyone, but got in their face and spit all over like a drill sergeant. Amen! When I was in middle school, I had two different teachers that made this teacher tame. One would threaten to beat you senseless if he caught you not paying attention. He never actually beat anyone, but got in their face and spit all over like a drill sergeant. The other teacher used to make anyone that got below a 75 on tests sit in front of the class on a stool with a dunce hat. Yes, a dunce hat.
Middle school? you got off easy. My kindergarten teacher threated to shoot us w/ BB guns, stick us out the window and slam it on us, and some other crazy shit. psycho bitch. And I still liked her more than my speech teacher in college. :harumph:

It can't be more humiliating than wearing an Elway jersey in the first place.

Pennsylvania student who wore Broncos jersey to school to get Elway recliner

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. The Pennsylvania student who was forced to sit on the floor for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey to school will soon be sitting in style.

Bassett Furniture has sent Joshua Vannoy a recliner that was designed by former Broncos quarterback John Elway.

Vannoy wore the Hall of Famer's number-seven jersey to class January 20th, two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers played the Broncos in a playoff game. His teacher forced him to take an exam sitting on the floor.

A Bassett Furniture spokeswoman says Elway heard the story and felt "no Broncos fan should have to sit on the floor." She says a "huge Broncos fan" like Vannoy will enjoy the red leather chair embossed with Elway's autograph and his number seven.

The honors student hasn't been back in school since the incident. His lawyer says the boy and school officials are meeting today to arrange his return.

What a whiney little baby!

That said - just another reason to hate Bassett furniture. Ugly furniture and they have a deal with ELway...

Not anymore, he's getting a new chair. All jokes aside though this is part of the problem with society in general. Growing up in High School is tough enough on kids already but when teachers join in the fracus than you have what happened to Columbine. The teacher should be ashamed of himself and fired immediately. Just cant have that kind of garbage coming from adults.

If anything teachers are nicer and more sensitive today than ever. This episode is such a non-event. I can understand it getting the parents upset, and resulting in a stern discussion with the principal, but the run this story has gotten is absurd.

I remember a lot of teachers making fun of students in school. Sometimes they deserved it, sometimes they didn't. Sometimes the students actually zinged them back and embarrassed the teacher instead. This kid is a wuss.

Beaver Falls is Joe Namath's home town, that is the ex-Jets QB that used to date Suzy Kolber.

I think the teacher should have been able to see if the kid was taking it in fun or being embarrassed.

I am surprised the kid obeyed the teacher and got on the floor. The teacher was wrong to do that if it was not taken in good fun.

When I school the stupid people 'round here, I let up if I see that they are not rolling with it.

The kid is lucky in one sense, if he had wore that Elway Jersey at that one school in South Dakota, the teacher would have tried to get milk out of his titties, and that would be worse than sitting on the floor.

Screw the poor little student. If you can't take a little ribbing then life is going to be a lot harder on you than that class was.

Besides, he IS a stinking denver fan.

If that kid crys at 17 wait till he's 40. He knew the school policy, wear Broncos gear and sit on the floor-lol. Thats funny I don't care who you are.

It was a lesson, right? Ethnicity? Sounds to me like the teacher was trying to make a point on how hard it is to get something accomplished when everyone is antagonizing you. The little boy is definitely a true Denver fan.

Student forced to sit on floor for jersey transfers

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania student who complained that a teacher forced him to sit on the floor during a midterm exam for wearing a Denver Broncos John Elway jersey has left the school district.

Brian Vannoy said his son, Joshua, faced continued harassment and silence from students at Beaver Falls High School.

"He doesn't feel wanted," Brian Vannoy told the Beaver County Times. "I just want him to be happy in school."

The 17-year-old junior enrolled at a new school Friday, but his father would not identify the school. Vannoy returned to school on Jan. 30 with an escort.

Vannoy wore the jersey of retired Denver quarterback to class Jan. 20, two days before the Steelers beat the Broncos in the AFC championship game. Teacher John Kelly, a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, forced him to take the midterm sitting on the floor and encouraged other students to pelt him with wads of paper.

Big Beaver Falls Area School District officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.
