Martz visits Raiders
Ex-Rams coach has 'get-to-know-you' chat

Mike Martz is the latest unemployed coach being linked to the Raiders after he paid a visit to the team's Alameda headquarters Thursday.

However, senior personnel executive Michael Lombardi, characterized the East Bay stopover as more of a "get to know each other" visit than a formal interview, adding it was very brief.

Elsewhere, though, the presence of the former Super Bowl-winning St. Louis Rams' coach, was being described as being linked directly to Oakland's head coaching job, the lastopening among nine that originally existed at the close of the 2005 season.

There is raw logic involved in thinking Martz would be included in the Raiders' thinking. His Rams' offense was so explosive it was billed "the greatest show on turf."

The Raiders have always preferred coaches with an offensive background, and Martz's teams — both as a head coach and offensive coordinator — took offense to a new level.

Between 1999-2001 the Rams averaged 32.6 points a game, winning one Super Bowl and losing another — winning with Martz as coordinator in 1999 and losing in 2001 with him as head coach. In his first five years before this past season, Martz's teams made the playoffs four times.

But after the fifth game this year, health issues forced him to the sidelines. He was unable to coach the remainder of the year because of endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the heart.

After the season, he was fired with a year left on his contract. He later reached a settlement for what is believed to be half of his final year's salary ($3.25 million).

Martz contended he was fully recovered as long ago as early December, and his agent, Bob LaMonte, has insisted his client is now stronger that he was before illness struck.

Martz formally interviewed for the New Orleans Saints head coaching job that ultimately went to Dallas offensive coordinator Sean Payton. He has been mentioned as a possible offensive coordinator for several positions.

He told the Associated Press recently he was in no hurry to rush into just any job.

"It's just time to let things settle," Martz said. "I think eventually it will work out."

Although Martz has not interviewed, the Raiders' interest in him dates back more than three weeks.

The day Norv Turner was relieved of his duties as Raiders coach, owner Al Davis said he would be interested in Martz, primarily as a coordinator, but under any circumstance would be concerned about his health.

"I would have to really think about it," Davis said. "Mike has always been of interest because he is dynamic. He is not afraid. But there is a fear there right now of (the) physical. I don't know if we are ready to accept that."

Martz, at one time, insisted he had no interest in a coordinator's position.
