View Full Version : I love L.A.

It should be pretty obvious to everyone here, that I am a California boy, one generation removed from Missouri.

Hate New York City
It's cold and it's damp
And all the people dressed like monkeys
Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town's a little bit too rugged
For you and me you bad girl

Rollin' down the Imperial Highway
With a big nasty redhead at my side
Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north
And we as born to ride

Roll down the window put down the top
Crank up the Beach Boys baby
Don't let the music stop
We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more

From the South Bay to the Valley
>From the West Side to the East Side
Every body's very happy
'Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day

I love L.A. (We love it)
I love L.A. (We love it)

Look at that mountain
Look at those trees
Look at that bum over there, man
He's down on his knees
Look at these women
There ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere

Century Boulevard (We love it)
Victory Boulevard (We love it)
Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it)
Sixth Street (We love it, we love it)

I love L.A.
I love L.A.
(We love it)

You do realize that Randy Newman wrote that song as an insult to the "typical" L.A. residents?

Of course, most people either don't know that or don't care...it's funny that LA has unofficially adopted it as its song.

Check out another song by Newman called "Rednecks". Hilarious.

Lived in Newport Beach for a little while before moving to Arizona. :)There is a cool old school Barber Shop in Santa Monica, they still have ash trays in the chairs, talk about boxing and chit while you get your hair cut. That the beach. Other than that, I don't have that many memories of the place. Usually, I am just somebodies guest there.

Theres just no describing that wonderful culture to people that get their Los Angeles knowledge from Boys in the Hood and Menace to Society.

In Scottsdale, you know who is rich. They ooze their finances from every pore of their body.

In Santa Monica... West Hollywood. Hell. Los Angeles... You dont always know. Some of the richest people I ever met looked like pot smoking bums.

I miss how casual and easy going the people are. I miss the culture and the night life. I miss the museums.

Damn. I wanna go home.

Wow. It's amazing how different perspectives can be. I grew up in Missouri and moved to L.A. in '99 and I couldn't believe how uptight people were. I mean, sure, you have your zen/yoga crowd, but most of the people I saw were always in a huge hurry to get places.

Now, my wife grew up in L.A. (during the schoolyear - she spent her summers in Thailand w/her family) and she sees it a little more like you. But she likes life here in MO because life moves at a slower pace.

I do miss some things about L.A. - Mt. biking in the S.M. Mountains, Malibu Seafood, etc.

He has an apartment right off Wilshire in BH, and a house near Westwood.

That is where most of my experiences of L.A. come from.

You forgot to mention the quality of the food in L.A. Never have I been in a place that has as many high quality restaurants with good food choices.

I grew up in Missouri. I spent my first 33 years there. I love Missouri and miss it at times. As of this month, I've lived is Southern California for 16 years. I have not regreted one minute of my move out here. I live in a nice little neighborhood in Studio City. The school system for my 7 year old is spectacular. Every 4th of July our neighborhood has our own little 4th of July parade. We walk through the streets waiving flags all dressed in red white and blue. I am walking distance from a little 9 hole par 3 golf course and driving range, walking distance from numerous great restaurants, Italian, Thai, Sushi, Pizza, burgers and many, many others. I can walk to our puplic library and a park for my 7 year that during the summer has live bands playing at night. I happened on to my own little heaven on earth. I am truely blessed. I too love LA.

Grew up in Pasadena and Riverside. My mom still has houses there and when I go there to check on them, I realize why I never moved back - I F'N HATE SO.CAL!!!
Crack heads, crack whores, traffic, smog, expensive, Northern Mexico, it just blows completely. Decent enough place to visit but I would never live there again. I just wish my brother didn't live there. Only exception, Pacific Beach/Point Loma in San Diego - Great place!

I'm used to the whole everyone mind their own business thing of LA.

heh... I agree with you that everyone seems to be in a hurry. But I've always chalked that up to the knowledge that no matter where you want to go, you're going to have to spend an hour driving there. hahaah. In fact, the concept that I wouldn't have to commute an hour each way to work was foreign to me until I moved here.

Is there anything better than the shacks up and down PCH with fresh, hours old, seafood? siiiiigh. To eat seafood here, I have to drag my boyfriend to hoity toity restaraunts... Or its just not safe. :p

Oh yeah...we had an apartment in Malibu for a couple years about a mile from Surfrider beach and one of my best friends managed The Shores motel so we hung out there a lot. Somewhere high in the desert near a curtain of a blue
St. Anne's skirts are billowing
But down here in the city of limelights
The fans of Santa Anna are withering
And you can’t deny that living is easy
If you never look behind the scenery
it's showtime for dry climes
And bedlam is dreaming of rain

When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning

This is not a test
Of the emergency broadcast system
When Malibu fires and radio towers
Conspire to dance again
And I cannot believe the media Mecca
They're only trying to peddle reality
Catch it on prime time, story at nine
The whole world is going insane

When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning

A placard reads
"The end of days"
Jacaranda boughs are bending in the haze
More a question than a curse
How could hell be any worse?
The flames are stunning
The camera's running
So take warning

When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning

Traffic?? The Broadway curve. I17 in the morning. the US60 until they JUST widened it. The 101 north of Indian Bend.

Pollution?? We've had 103958945 days of advisories. We were a national joke when our sky was more brown than blue. And that was like... What? 3 weeks ago?

Shitty sports? Come on now. The only time this town backed the Dbacks was when we had our WS run. The only time this town cares about the Suns is when they make the playoffs. Don't even make me describe the level of apathy for the Cardinals.

Violent crime? We have more and more dead mexicans in the desert every day. We're the number one city for stolen cars. Road rage involving guns is RAMPANT here. Every month there's a new rapist running around. One town in Glendale has like a child molester every 2 out of 3 houses.

you win with commuting and hollywood.

The housing market here right now is RETARDED. Our public servants can not afford to live in any decent neighborhood. THEY commute 45 minutes just to go save us from fires and bad people.

I stayed there for a week a few years ago and some people took me to the little district, WTF was it called? Nothing world-shaking by any means but it was at least packed with younger party people who came to get down.

After sunset the people all drive away and they roll up the sidewalks in the downtown PHX so the homeless can move around more easily.

LA's murder rate is two and a half times larger than NEW YORK's!

I'd feel safer cruising naked in South Detroit. At least if you're walking on a side street, you'd be slightly surprised if you're robbed.

If you're walking in a bad part of town and someone rolls up in a car next to you, odds are they aren't asking you for directions. Run first, ask questions never.

Often times when friends visit LA for the first time, my wife and I take them on a "Swinger's Tour". We'll go to 3 Clubs, Daddy's & the Dresden, then end up at the 101 for late night breakfast. We've seen Marty & Elaine on several occassions and they're exactly as they appear in the movie.
