KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An Independence teacher has been charged with possessing child pornography.
Friday afternoon, Jackson County Prosecutor Mike Sanders announced that Jeffery P. Rosetta, 40, of Independence, has been charged with 17 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution. Sanders has requested a $100,000 cash only bond.
Rosetta is a teacher at Pioneer Middle School in Independence.
Investigators say on Feb. 8, 2006, Rosetta "possessed obscene material ... that portrays what appears to be a person under the age of 14 years as a participant of sexual conduct." They also charge that Rosetta submerged the images in water "with the purpose to impair its availability in the child pornography investigation of the defendant by the Independence Police Department and The Cyber Crimes Task Force, an official investigation and thereby impaired and obstructed the prosecution of Jeffery P. Rosetta for the crime of possession of child pornography, a felony."
On Nov. 18, 2005, an undercover Special Agent of the FBI known as M.D. observed explicit images of hardcore child pornography. M.D. established an undercover account.
On Dec. 1, 2005, investigators sent an administrative subpoena to request profile information for the suspect, including account transaction history, accounts associated with the suspect’s account and accounts that paid into the suspect’s account. The next day, the company identified Rosetta. The FBI notified Independence detectives.
On Feb. 7, agents of the Federal Cyber Crime Task Force interviewed Rosetta. Jackson County Prosecutor’s probable cause statement said Rosetta refused a request to search his home computer. A search warrant was issued Wednesday. During the search of the residents, detectives recovered 20 photographs of children, 12 of which depicted child pornography.
