Oh please. If Art Shell really is a "damn fine coach" why hasn't he gotten another head coaching job until now?

He was fired 12 years ago by the Raiders. And this is the first head coaching job he's had since??

Probably not a bad move for Al. Shell put a better team on the field for Al than all but Chucky since Shell's hiring/firing. I am a bit suprised that Shell went back. I was under the impression that he was pretty bitter towards Al when he came to KC to coach our OL.

I never really understood why he never got another shot as a head coach. He was successful during his tenure with the Raiders and has been an outstanding assistant for years. I think he just got passed over and became everyones token minority interview. Oakland could of did a lot worse than hiring him back.

Out of all the coaches that were hired this offseason he is easily one the best. I would take him over anyone not named Edwards or Childress.

I actually think it's a good hire. Better than some of the guys they were interviewing anyway. He's got a great record, only had a losing record once and several playoff appearances. Does go to show how the NFL is a good ol boys network. You see some of the idiots that get hired while this guy goes unhired with a great record on a team where the owner is always hanging over your shoulder.

Shell was 54-38 with two playoff wins with the Raiders.

I'm sure Greasy Al will take that.

I think a lot of his staff is already built. The DC, Rob Ryan, was retained before even hiring the coach.

I thought Ryan was picked up by another team once Norv was fired. For some reason I thought another team scooped him up. I've also been drinking- which probably means I'm wrong

I had alot of respect for Art Shell until now. Talk about zero pride. You not only go back to where you were fired, you take a job no one else seems to want, bailing Al Davis out at the same time.

Yeah, cause nobody wants to be an NFL head coach. (Except for virtually every assistant coach in America.)

Art would have been smarter to sit on his pride and never be a head coach again. Everybody would respect him and the Hall of Fame for proud people would have featured his bust.

Quite possibly. Gotta be tough knowing you weren't the first or second choice.

Ya, it does appear that he was the last choice. but considering all the recent hires, having the Raider pedigree can only help getting some sort of integrity back to the team..

It's pretty impressive when you think about it though, on the down low for years and then boom! HC...

He deserves it.

Sh!t.

He did wonders with Trezelle Jenkins. Hard to blame him there. It's not like another OL coach turned Jenkins into a player. Even Michelangelo couldn't sculpt well with Play Doh.

The difference between when he left the Raiders and was re-hired by the Raiders is time. Memories fade, people begin to believe in themselves and feel that they can turn a team around. To bad that Al will never be turned around. I used to work for a guy that Al makes look good and he was a total asshole. Al is the pattern for all true assholes.

Art can't possibly have a record worse than the Raiders had last year, so unless he really pisses in his own soup he should have a solid two year run. It might be longer if AD bites the dust between now and then, but if I were Art, I'd be saving as much of the paychecks as I could as a contingency plan.

I kind of have to think this is a pretty good move for the Raiders, Shell has been a good coach and was a decent HC for them. Feel bad that Shell had to go back there to get his second shot at HC.
