View Full Version : Too many forums?

OK, so the DC forum made sense because there were a bunch of annoying political threads and those people were pretty active and exclusionary. I was a little dissapointed to see that forum created because now I hardly ever actually go over there to participate, and I was one of the crossover people that actually enjoyed rapping political AND talking football.

But now it's getting crazy, and a lot of these forums have just a couple posts a day and even though the topic is cool, they aren't very active... I can think of a couple of the 'music' threads that would be over 100 posts if they were over here, and we all would enjoy them... So why exclude them? Same thing with the Gilbert Brown Zone, and the Tech stuff...

I'm just voicing my opinion. If everybody likes the mulitple forum format, then I'll shut up. But I seem to recall that there was about a 50/50 split and a big debate over creating the DC forum in the first place. Now I look and there is a new one being created all the time.

DRAFTPLANET??????? Why the hell would we want to boot FOOTBALL TALK off the main lounge? I think it's getting a little dumb...

That's the only one I really don't understand. All the political crap was really starting to annoy people. The board is 100% better off with it not being on the main page.

I know the subject of the draft forum came up and it got a lot of support. Now that it's the only thing football related to talk about, it seems like a bad idea.

Personally, I don't care. It's one extra click, and if you're not smart enough to find it you probably don't have anything worthwhile to add anyway.

I guess I'd be cool with keeping DC, since a lot of people were annoyed... And of course, the pic lounge helps people who are at work not get busted. I'd even say that the "tech" forum serves a purpose because those threads drop quickly on the main forum and it sucks if you're one of those guys and you have to search for a particular thread....

But I think, Gilbert Brown, Draft, and Music should get put back on the main lounge. Those kinds of threads used to be really popular back in the day I think they helped make Chiefsplanet a really cool place. Now, if you have something to talk about, you have to figure out where to put it, and GOD FORBID you put it in the wrong place or you get yelled at or it gets moved, and instead of discussing the subject it becomes an argument over where you SHOULD have posted it.

I thought the Draft Forum was a good Idea to to keep information about players. I didn't think its creations ment that we could no longer have draft discussions on the main board, I get pissed when they are moved to that fourm.

I thought it was a place for people who did research on players could keep that info without it falling off the first page, kind of like a reference book.

See THAT would be cool... But eventually we're gonna have so many forums for common topics that the Main Page will end up a series of nothing but complaints and gay jokes...

I have no problem with the multi-forum format. Most of the bulletin boards I participate on have about twice as many. They are good for organization. As fast as threads advance in the Lounge, if a thread goes unposted on for even a few hours, it'll easy slip past notice and you may have to sift through five or six pages of threads to find it again. I think threads on the Lounge are more likely to be consigned to oblivion earlier than in some of the other forums, simply because there's too much work involved to search for them.

Yeah, but the flip side of that coin is that only 1 out of every 80 people even LOOK at the cool threads on the other boards. And for good reason. There isn't any action in those forums (except DC) and even that's not as hot as it used to be. During peak hours it's not uncommon to have over 100 people viewing the Lounge and just a half dozen or so on the alternative threads. All it's doing is bringing the boards overall popularity down by putting potentially good threads somewhere where most won't ever bother to see them.

The idea of multiple forums always sounds appealing because it gives people a sense of organization, but I've always thought it was a bad idea. As easy as it is to hop from subforum to subforum, people just don't do it that much. The halcyon days for this place were when nearly everything was in a single forum.

It would be the best of both worlds if threads could be created with a topic category tag and users were able to either view all threads as if they were in a single forum or filter them to only look at "music" or "football" or "politics" threads, if that was all they were interested in.

ChiefsPlanet used to be different from all the other forums, not just because of it's "almost anything goes" moderation policies, but because such a wide variety of topics were all intermingled in a single, crazy, free-for-all of a forum. It still has the same moderation policy, but it's moving in the wrong direction with all the subforums. IMO

I agree that draft talk should be in the main forum. It is football, after all.

As far as the music and tech forums are concerned, I do not really care. The tech forum was originally created to keep “help me” threads from falling off the page. Seems to me the sub-forum serves that purpose. But if no one looks there, it might as well slide off the page.

I would prefer that the picture forum remain separate. Work issues.

As jspchief pointed out, if you are not smart enough to find a sub-forum, you probably are not smart enough to contribute anything useful anyway.

In fact, as long as the DC Forum remains permanently separate from the Lounge, I have no strong feelings on the sub-forum issue.

Really, if we had the IGNORE THIS THREAD option I have been begging for there would be no need for any sub-forums.

1) The Draft forum was created BY USER REQUEST. Feel free to discuss the draft in the main forum. After a thread starts to stagnate, it will be moved to the Draft forum. You've NEVER BEEN confined to talking about the draft only in that forum. That forum is provided as a service to those of us who don't want to wade through 4 pages of poop threads to find a thread about Tamba Hali that's only THIRTY HOURS OLD. We talked to some mods from other boards (namely Taco) and were told that the Draft-only discussion forums at those sites were some of the most popular they have.

2) The idea that any of these forums are "unused" or "slow" is a complete MYTH. The MusicPlanet forum alone is one of the fastest growing on the entire board. Considering that it's an exclusive forum, that's fairly interesting.

3) All discussions are allowed in the Lounge (see #1). Tech discussions, Draft discussions, and other discussions that satisfy sub-forum criteria will be moved for organization's sake. This has been requested by MANY users so that things are easier to find. This may change once the search function works, but right now search is about 75% worthless.

4) The Games forum (now CasinoPlanet, due to it being almost exclusively dedicated to gambling threads) has been moved out from under the Lounge to free up screen space. This again was done due to USER REQUEST, and because the forum itself has little action during the offseason. It was not removed, just moved.

5) The GilbertBrown Zone was created at the request of the owner of that forum.

6) It's unlikely we'll create any further sub-forums. These were the ones that have been most-requested. However, we are considering the creation of a whiners-only forum, since whining seems to be the most common activity around here lately.
