I've never had President's Day off work before. I even got MLK day off this year. When I worked for Motorola I think I got New Year's Day off... then the next holiday was Memorial Day.

It was over the course of that summer that I began to recall the words of wisdom my dear grandmother had shared with me when I was very young. I kept them in mind from that point forward, vowing to never stray from the values that had been instilled in me. I planned on staying true to her memory, in the face of temptation.

That November, my older sister was struck by a trolley and confined to a hospital for the entirety of the winter and a large portion of the spring. She so enjoyed the snow, which made things all the more difficult for her as she sat in a bed and tried to recuperate from her myriad ailments. Signs of improvement were often followed by her condition rapidly declining, and it was a trying situation for the whole family.

I managed to get through the ordeal by expanding my borders, and occasionally absconding with her fiance for what were correctly considered by those who knew about them to be illicit encounters. Eventually, I stole him away from her altogether. Any guilt I may have felt for hurting my sweet, already-downtrodden sister was washed away when I remembered how little I cared for the feelings of others.

With time came changes. I quickly tired of the handsome but somewhat ignorant man who'd been engaged to my sister, casting him aside like an old toy that was of no further use. I had more important things to worry about than appeasing someone who was clearly not worth my time anymore, and told him as much.

My sister succumbed to her injuries the next summer. There was a large funeral. I did not attend; not out of any sense of guilt, but because I simply couldn't be bothered. My parents told me I would regret it, but I responded to their requests by informing them that it was their fault for not supervising my drunken whore of a sister more closely and preventing her from getting into trouble in the first place.

I regaled them with fabricated stories of her shocking, improper behaviour, surely tarnishing my sister's memory in their minds, even if they insisted they (rightfully) didn't believe me. I knew the doubts alone were enough. My grandmother would surely have been proud.

As I look back on that tumultuous time, I realize how much I loved them all.

I have no regrets.
