Should be one interesting game. Im happy with how we have played so far this year and grown... definitely going to be a showdown tonight.

Im not expecting a win, but I sure would like to be pleasantly surprised.

The Irwin Center sucks. The most stale basketball environment in the Big 12. It won't be half as intimidating as Mizzou Arena was for KU.

It's a good clash between maturity and unbelievable raw talent.

You cant compare Mizzou arena with anything when KU comes into town when you talk about hostile environments.

I think Texas wins by 6.

Rick Barnes is a sh*** coach and can't motivate his team, but the crowd should do that for him today.

KU has no one to match up on Tucker. He'll go off.

KU has to shoot really well from outside to win this game. They can't rely on their superior athleticism like they have recently.

Texas plays only seven players. The have no depth, so they have to play a zone for 40 minutes. Between Rush's ability to penetrate and Chalmers and Robinson's outside shot, I like KU's chances.

The crowd will not play a factor.

ku might be able to win on depth alone

just start running and attacking the basket ... the longhorn big guys down low will get tired and start having to foul..... game over.

Dunit35
02-25-2006, 03:19 PM
If Texas only has a depth of 7 and KU doesn't just plain attack the basket I will be super mad. Get them in foul trouble and take command of the court. Rush, Wright and Kaun should just take it to the hoop and create fouls.

Three Keys, IMO:

1. Limit turnovers.

3. We'll need some threes.

Otherwise, their big guys will keep us down.

I'm thinking our big guys will work them over. We have 5 guys 6'8" or taller and 3 of them are 235# or more. We can bang and afford the fouls but they can't.

I'm just not confident our big guys coming off the bench can really handle them....unless we force them to loosen up, with the outside shooting.

I think it's somewhere in between... we played really well at times regardless of the level of competition, but at the same time I'm not sure why anyone would have been that confident going to Texas, especially when Texas was out to do something about their crappy play.

Seriously, they took him out for the most part, by us not able to hit the outside shot, we were toast from the opening bell. They pretty much let the teams play, it wasn't as physical as I expected.

That 3 point shooting was major difference.

Things I learned tonite from the game...

-Rush was afraid to shoot the ball
-The way TX played tonite, I dont think anyone could have beat them
-KU can't play against a zone defense
-I still hate Brad Buckman
-Dick Vitale referred to Roy Williams or the ACC at least 25 times through out the game
-Our big men had no answer for Aldridge
-KU got their asses kicked, but I see payback coming from the Big12 tourney

Rush looked horrid. Couldn't handle the pressure. But the main thing what that when a team like Texas shoots above 50% their going to be hard to beat. Any team that shoots as well as they did is going to be hard to beat.

A good lesson for KU though. Let's see what they can do after this.

I'm happy to throw in my two cents as I was one amongst us who thought KU would hang with Texas and probably beat them tonight. Texas was dead on tonight, and I was affraid of that after the two poor road games they played.

Rush was a non-factor. Wright was a man. He had no help, though.

KU is going to struggle against a zone. I don't think they're as bad of a three-point shooting team as they showed tonight, but not much better.

The loss sucks, but I wouldn't put too much weight on it. Texas needed this win more than KU did. Still it would have been nice to have been competitive, but as many of you have mentioned, I'm not sure how many teams would have been competitive against Texas tonight.

Well sucked to watch tonight, but it doesn't hurt as bad when you expected to lose. It'll be nice to remember how they left in their starters til the one minute mark next year when they come to the Phog without Tucker, Aldridge, or Buckman. I hope we beat them by 50.

Now that that's out of my system, thoughts on the game. I thought Texas would win, but I am surprised that we were blown out, because this Bill Self team just doesn't get blown out. Our D is usually enough to keep us in games even if we aren't shooting well. I thought we gave good effort and hustle for most of the game. Two things happened that spelled doom for KU, one that I predicted and the other that I didn't see coming whatsoever. We did not shoot well from the perimeter and they shot lights out. That was critical especially in the 2nd half when we couldn't penetrate against their zone. The other thing, and I guess I have to give Rick Barnes a little credit here, they did a masterful job on Julian Wright. In KU games recently, Wright has been abusing teams with his uncanny passing ability in the low post. I guess Barnes watched all of that film and stressed to his guys to be ready to jump the interior passing lanes every time Wright got the ball. It was a very effective strategy. It's not the only reason they won, but it sure didn't help. I didn't think it was the best-called game I had ever seen, but it wasn't the worst either. We got some calls early in the 2nd half, but they got several calls driving the ball into the low post that really hurt. Some of Texas's playmakers that game, especially in the first half, made difficult shots even when they were well defended. That's the mark of superior talent.

I thought that individually, Kahn and Giles played some nice minutes in the 1st half, especially on D, but folded in the 2nd. Rush had one of his worst games, offensively, and defensively on Tucker, mostly in the 2nd half (tucker only had 2 pts at te half). Chalmers and Robinson did not force as many turnovers as they had recently. I know that Tx isn't immune to that, since Memphis forced a lot of turnovers against them when I saw them earlier. OSU got a lot of TO's too.

As far as our seeding and ranking go, I think we drop probably 2 or 3 spots in the Top 25, to 21 or 20, no big whoop. Doesn't mean too much right now. Seeding wise, it's a huge difference here. If we won, and won the Big 12 Tourney, I think we could've made a case for a 3, but getting blown out makes us look a little illegitimate I think. The selection committee really uses 4 criteria: RPI, Strength of schedule, "quality wins" and "bad losses". Unfortunately for KU, since we lost by 25, it will be considered a "bad loss" by the selection committee. Any loss by more than 20 is a bad loss for them, just like TX's losses to Duke and Tennessee will be considered bad losses, even though those are good teams. That and the OSU loss kills their chance at a 1 seed. For us, we are ok on the first two criteria, but since the Big XII is down this year, we don't have a lot of quality wins to trumpet. Oklahoma is probably the best, and we did that barely in our gym. You might count California too, since they've come on recently. One other thing the tourney committee loves is how you are performing late in the season as opposed to early. That helps KU a lot. The most recent Bracketology had us at a #5. I think this drops us to a 6. If we win the last 2 games vs. CU and K St, I think we maintain that. The only way to improve our seed now dramatically is to win the Big XII Tourney and maybe beat TX in a rematch. That would give us legitimacy. I think if we do that, we are a #4 seed. If not, we stay at 6, mostly because of our lack of quality wins. I'd rather be a 6 than a 4 or 5 anyway, though. That 5/12 game is historically a b****, and if you're one of those 2 seeds, you gotta play the #1 in Round 3. Given the separation of the upper echelon this year in college BB between the top 4 teams and the rest of the field, I'd much rather play the #2 than the #1.

Rock Chalk!!! :KU:

A few quotes:

First - Austin, Texas — “Worse than Baylor” is the chant that emanated from the University of Texas student section in the closing minutes of the Longhorns’ 80-55 victory over Kansas on Saturday in the Erwin Center.

Response: “We know we’re not worse than Baylor. They know we’re not worse than Baylor,” KU sophomore Russell Robinson said with a shrug. “We just have to refocus. After a big loss like this, there’s nowhere to go but up.”

I like the confidence and sense of reality.

“There’s always hope. We can still win the league,” Robinson said. “It’s just disappointing because we felt we were playing so well lately. We were on a 10-game win streak. Things were all going right. Tonight, we just didn’t do the things we can do. If we play again, we’ll be ready.” - Russel Robinson

“We’re a young team. We were not ready for the pressure,” Giles said. “We’ll be ready next time. It’s something we can learn from. We’ll get better as we go.” - C.J. Giles

Good Morning Jayhawk Nation .......

A few thoughts here for our wondermous rival fans ......

On last night's loss .......... Hold on to that cherished moment as long as you can. We are a young team still learning, there are going to be bumps in the road along the way. This team has already done better than I had expected of them.....

Seedings ...... sure it is nice to get a higher seed, but just getting in is better than most of our confrence will do. As we win, it becomes a sweeter and bigger slice of cake . To get a lower seed and win in the tourney, esp. if you go far is nothing to sneeze at.

To the MU and KSU fans who want to cheer about a KU loss, feel free, it's the only ritual you have to do, which doesn't happen as often as you like for it to. You only wish your team could be as successful as KU. Yep, jealously runs amok in Pussycat Nation ( this includes both Tiggers and Kittens ) . We understand why you hate to see KU win so often and laugh when KU lose's. We understand that it suck's to be a 2nd / 3rd tier team in the confrence year in and year out. ( Oh wait, MU is a 4th tier team this year, right, KSU is slightly better. ) So enjoy your team of failure. We understand you get GREAT joy by a KU loss, it's the only thing you get to cheer about.

With All of our love,
Jayhawk Nation .

P.S. Good Luck Rival fans, See you in the NCAA Tourney......... Oh wait, I guess we won't, that's just isn't remotely possible unless some team hands you the BIG 12 Confrence Tourney .

Certainly nothing like that could happen again, like say, in the first round of the NCAA's...

Good luck clearing the first round in the NCAA's this year.
That would be progress for you guys, and learning is what college is all about.

Hey, Mizzou sucks this year at basketball, there's no doubt.
But as I recall, we're 1 and 1 against KU this year right?

It won't happen again in the first round of the NCAAs, because gutter dwellers like Mizzou won't be there.

I'll be happy with 2nd round this year and a good effort in the 3rd.

Progress? Apparently someone has forgotten we are a mere 3 years removed from a Championship game appearance and back to back Final 4's. Typical of a Mizzou fan to ignore those facts. Talk about selective memory.

Yep, we split this year. Congrats.

Pointing out individual losses that have nothing to do with Mizzou is probably not the smartest. If you want to talk head to head, let's do it. If we want to start comparing tournament resume's and all time wins-losses, let me know. You're gonna lose either way so, I guess I can see why you'd grasp onto one loss by your rival. You're entire program's biggest highlight in the last year was KU losing to Bucknell. That is truly pathetic.

MU fans will always revel in any loss by KU. KU fans will always revel in losses by MU. The difference is KU's goal is always to win a national title, while MU's goal is to win at home against KU....MU's goal is to hire a competent coach...MU's goal is to finish in the top 4 of the Big 12...

Well, this year they are shooting 1 for 3. Great year MU.

Mizzou sucks. K-State sucks. KU is not leaps and bounds better than either of them. The Big XII is really sad. Even Texas isn't that great IMO.

Here is to not seeing another Big XII team in the Final Four, again. :shake:

What a surprise, MU loser fans piling on.

Quite sad when someone gets more pleasure out of another team's failure than his own team's success.

As for the game, we got f*cking rocked. Their forwards were all better than anyone on our team. We got pushed around.

I knew we weren't as good as advertised, but I never thought we were that bad.

Who exactly are you talking about? Skip Town?

I really, really hate this generalization bullshit.

Yep. He's got this thing with Skip. But this generalization is typical of MU fans. They live for 2 things: 1. To beat KU (and storm the court) and 2. To wait for KU to lose (and rub it in).

Well all they have to do is wait till the first of March. It is like anything else on the calander, Christmas is on the 25th, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of the month and KU loses early in March.

Heh, how short a memory you must have. Have you forgotten KU's Elite Eight 2 years ago? Or perhaps you've forgotten the National Championship game 3 years ago? And the Final Four the year before?

Kinda makes your joke sound dumb. :p

As long as they are alive and kicking in MID March when the NCAA Tournament starts, that's fine with me.

It reminds me of...
BUCKNELL!

I can't wait for basketball season to end.
It's a trail of tears.
Tigers will be back someday.
(Whistfull staring into space...)

Can't wait to watch KU croak in the NCAAs again.
It's a sure sign of spring.

Holy shit look, another fair weathered Mizzou fan that has nothing to look forward to anymore but a KU loss. Sounds like you're an MU fan when or if they win and nothing else.

I know, it must really suck when the only excitement you get is by watching KU lose, which isn't often.

Here's hoping MU stays the course.
