I've been downloading MP3 sets from Beaker Street (http://beakerstreet.com/MPEG/mpegs.htm) lately. A ton of 5-hour shows in their entirety, all free.

You more, ahem, mature types may remember Beaker Street as the big underground music program based in Little Rock, AR back in the early 70's. Lots of obscure 60's-70s rock.

Wow, I'm impressed!

I'd have you know that Kamelot is what is known as Power Metal, and they're one of America's shining examples of the form. I prefer their albums "Karma" and "Epica." Great stuff.

I agree with you on Dragonforce, which I'm coincedentally listenign to right now:) They don't really write the best songs, but I find them fun on occasion because of Herman Li's INSANE guitar work.

How does that one compare to "Valley of the Damned?" I thought Valley was alright, and Herman Li is an amazing shredder, but it lacked variety. "Heart of the Dragon" was my favorite track on it. These guys do it about as fast as I've ever heard it done, without sacrificing melody! They're faster than most thrash bands! Surprisingly, one guy on Amazon compared them to Lost Horizon, who I don't think they sound even remotely like. Another reviewer said they don't sound close to anyone else in power metal, but I personally think they sound a lot like Highland Glory.

They only sound like Lost Horizon insofar as both play power metal, imo, yeah.
I've got all three of Dragonforce's albums because, despite being extremely cheesy with occasionally lacking songwriting, they're guitarists are amazing beyond words and they're fun.

Valley of the Damned is my least favorite of the three. Inhuman Rampage right now is second for me. I haven't spent enough time with it to know if I like it better than Sonic Firestorm. The 2st track off of the new album, "Through the Fire and the Flames" is awesome though. The music video (with solo battle!) is on various internet sites like YouTube and Yahoo.

Penumbra _ “The Last Bewitchment”
Pretty generic symphonic goth metal. If they would lose the growling male vocals and feature the ethereal female voice, they might carve out a small spot in the Gaz rotation. As it is, they are destined for the Recycle Bin.

Opeth _ “Deliverance”
More black death metal. Geez, I am so tired of hearing these guys swallowing their voices in an attempt to sound scary or demonic. Regardless of the instrumental ability [and there is considerable ability here], this has no chance at all of making it into regular rotation. Get back with me when Opeth issues a karaoke version.

Opeth _ “Damnation”
The death metal rockers go commercial alternative. Go figure. Interesting stuff. Certainly more my cuppa than the screeching & howling backed by crunching guitars. Neither incarnation will be a regular in the Gaz rotation, but I may download some Opeth-Lite tunes.

Opeth is my favorite band in the world, so I'm going to defend them here. Now, it's obvious that harsh vocals aren't your cup of tea, but I know literal hundreds of prog rock guys who can enjoy them now because of Opeth.

The two albums you listened to were perhaps the worst ones to get into Opeth. They were a double album set released months apart (Like System of a Down's latest albums) Deliverance was meant to be an all-out heavy beast of a recording, and Damnation was an excuse for Mikeal to use up what then was a large surplus of acoustic passages.

Give em a second try, and listen to one of the two albums that sum up thier sound the best - "Blackwater Park," (which put them onb the map) and "Ghost Reveries." (Thier latest, and first on a large label)

Actually, that's true.

But one band is commonly accepted amongst metal circles as amazing (Opeth) while the other band is commonly accepted amongst metal cirlces as an embarassingly bad example of popified black metal with an irritating vocalist.

In summation, CoF are terrible, and possibly hazardous to one's health, while listening to Opeth is a worthwhile musical endeavor.

Ask anyone who knows anything about music at all. CoF are terrible. They're only good to the undiscerning ear of MTV2 viewers who are searching for something dark and atmospheric, but have no idea that anything with artistic merit can fit those criteria. (This is because real black metal doesn't have an audience enough to sell hundreds of thousands of copies of a record. CoF take BM infuences and shove them into thier obtuse, popified mess of music and make it just accessible enought o get MTV2 airtime and sell gold records.)

I think one of the reasons that CoF sometimes escapes the generic label is that, as you observed, there isn't a large audience for black metal, so people who are well-versed in bm will recognize CoF for what it is, pop-commercial black metal, but people who aren't well-versed in that particular subgenre of metal will see them as a bit less common.

I wouldn't say that Creed has done little or nothing to the music scene. It's true that they were rather simplistic, canned hard rock (yes, they were hard rock, though I like to call them "polished grunge"; they just weren't really metal); but they were among the first to blend that grunge sound with the 80s metal sound, and bring the over-the-top arena performances to the genre, and they did spawn a generation of imitators. They were definitely trend-setters in the "polished arena grunge" scene, along with Nickelback. Make no mistake, I'm not a Creed fan (though I'm not a Creed hater either), but it is a bit hasty to deny the influence they've had on the modern hard rock scene.

Hey, I just posted a simple emoticon. You came to CoF's defense using an almost apples-to-oranges comparison between CoF and Opeth. Had you not done that, I probably would have left it alone.

I wouldn't really call Green Day, relative innovators of thier sound, generic. That said, I find nothing wrong with pop music.

Mostly Autumn – The Last Bright Day
Goth rock Lite? Pretty enough, but it did not hold my attention.

Day of Fire – Day of Fire
Alternative rock. The playing is okay [the opening bars of “I Am the Door” and “To Fly” were particularly promising], but I did not warm to the singer’s style or voice [at least one of these is a prerequisite]. Not a keeper.

Midnattsol – Where Twilight Dwells.
Goth rock. Not quite as muscular and aggressive as Evanescence. Think Xandria or Within Temptation. More operatic in tone. If I did not already have a bunch of Xandria on hand, I might pursue this band. As it is…

Nightingale – 1
Metal. Ahhh…a metal group with a singer in stead of a screamer. More melodic than most metal and somewhat lacking in the raw guitar power that makes metal ring for me. In fact, I suspect that some hardcore metalheads might refuse to own this as metal and might stuff it in the Hard Rock box. So far, no tune has made enough of an impression to make it into the Gaz rotation.

Gaz

Nektar – Remember the Future
Progressive rock. Kinda repetitive. Nothing exceptional in the playing or singing. Don’t think so.

Black Abyss – Land of Darkness
Metal. Reminds me of Kiss’ “The Elder.” Adequate instruments with awful singing. Not even close.

Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Alternative country. My goodness, what a voice! The songs are a bit odd and can be off-putting, but Case’s amazing voice carries it off. You folks who turn you nose up at anything with “country” in the title need to give this a listen. A prince [princess would be more accurate, but spoils the metaphor] amongst frogs.
You can sample Neko Case’s albums at emusic.com. And you should do so.

Time Machine –Evil
Goth rock. Pretty good stuff, if you like the genre [and I am coming to appreciate it more as I listen]. Orchestral backgrounds over some driving guitars and drums. A nice mix of slow, drifting “woe is me, I am alone and mortal” and fast, driving “woe is me, I am alone and mortal” tunes. Worth a second audition.

Vision Divine – Stream of Consciousness
Progressive Metal. The whole point of prog music is showing off musical chops. This album has some nice guitar work, but it falls far short of Dream Theater. There is room for lots of bands under the prog umbrella, but I found nothing special about Vision Divine.

Seventh Key – Seventh Key
Rock. Straightforward rock with some blues influence in the lead guitar [so what else is new?]. They sound like a bazillion other rock bands. There are a couple of good tunes [“Missy” is okay]“, but nothing stands out above the pack.

Jeff Scott Soto – Lost in the Translation
Rock. More decent rock that does not rise above “okay.” I do not particularly care for the singer, so the songs would have to be above average to keep my attention. The songs are not bad, but they are not significantly above average. If I had some free downloads, I might score some Jeff Scott Soto. Since it will cost me hard cash [well, hard charges in my credit card], I will wait for something a bit more exceptional.

SheDaisy – Fortuneteller’s Melody
Counrtry. Country pop, to be more accurate. Pop backgrounds and lots of close harmony. They have nice voices that blend well and the songs are pleasant. Pop music for grumpy old farts disgusted by the current state of pop music. Guilty as charged.

Dude, do you know any OLD Iced Earth, like circa 1995? I am trying like hell to remember a song by them and can't do it. Looking at the Discography isn't helping.

"...offer me good omen...make the sacrifice, the hour's close at hand..."

ARRGH!
There are two bands that, by all acounts of my musical preferences, I should adore - yet I don't listen to either. Those bands are Dream Theater and Iced Earth. I can't help ya on that one.

Oh, and on Psycroptic: instead of saying "they can't be all that bad," you'll be asking "they can't be this good; no death metal band can!" Their album "The Scepter of the Ancients" is thier best, but their new one "Symbols of Failure" isn't far behind.

Alogia – Secret Spheres of Art
Progressive Metal is how I would describe it. Some very nice driving backgrounds, but the singers shrill voice gets on my nerves. Different, but not all that likeable.

Tactile Gemma – Tactile Gemma
Weird. Just…weird. Breathy female vocals [fresh from “English as a Second Language” class] over odd, disjointed instruments. “Within Temptation” on Valium and magic mushrooms. Interesting, but not pleasant.

Driven – Wreckage
Prog Rock. After the unsettling “Tactile Gemma” experience, this seems very down-to-earth. The singer is lacking the voice quality department and the instruments are fairly ordinary. Kinda boring, not to put too fine a point on it.

Draconian – Where Love Mourns
Goth Metal. Soaring female vocals and gargling male vocals over symphonic backgrounds. Dispense with the ludicrous “dark” male vocals and this genre could get a chunk of my attention. However, I tune out the moment the “evil and scary” male voice kicks in, so I remain on the outside looking in. Fans of the genre [Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Xandria, so forth] might find some gold amongst the dross.

Driven – Phoenix Rises
Hard Rock. Okay, this is more like it. I hesitated to give “Driven” another shot after the Wreckage album, but this is some nice driving rock. Gone are the artsy prog pretentions. This is a definite possibility.

Solarized – Driven
Rock. Bass. Lots and lots of bass, with a bit of a Southern flavor. Redneck “Black Sabbath.” It tweaks my nostalgia button a bit, but is not sponge-worthy, in the musical sense.

Silent Voices – Building up the Apathy
Metal with a big old dose of Progressive influence. I realize this will be considered heresy by the hardcore fans, but they remind me a lot of an apolitical Queensr˙che. Not that there is anything wrong with that…

A Dream Within A Dream
The Raven
The Cask Of Amontillado-The Alan Parsons Project

Alan Parsons re-recorded “A Dream Within a Dream” on the “A Valid Path” album. Parsons’ last album [A Valid Path] was a lot more in the electronic vein than the pop sensibilities of the previous Alan Parsons Project releases. Still, mediocre Alan Parsons is still better than most other pop music out there.

I have enjoyed a couple of tunes from bands new to me:
• Course of Nature – Caught in the Sun

Given some of your past comments, you'd probably enjoy the entire Course of Nature CD.

Alan Parsons re-recorded “A Dream Within a Dream” on the “A Valid Path” album. I like the remake as it also weaves The Raven in with it as well.My understanding is that the electronic influence came mostly from Parson's son who plays on the project as well.

Now playing
for all the Stones haters/couldn't get into the Stones
Aftermath.

The Stones' first flash of all-out brilliance is just as apparent on the U.K. version of this album as it is on the U.S. edition, despite their major differences. Here, there's no "Paint It, Black," but there's "Mother's Little Helper," the long version of "Out Of Time," amazing cover art, and the jaw-dropping "Under My Thumb."
