He wants to stay in KC, we just had to dump slary to get under the cap for now. People (Green, Gonzo) will restructure if a new CBA doesn't get done soon.

What does the fact that Marty drafted him have to do with anything?

This isn't even close to the same thing as Donnie. The Chiefs had the cap space back then to sign Donnie, they chose to lowball him.

This is because of the players association and the CBA.

I understand why people on this board are pissed off because of Will Shields being cut.

Most people LOVE the guy, and count me in as one of them. I loved what Will did for this organization. I think I can stand proud and say, he is one of the fewest Chiefs I've seen in my time that provided this organization with so much loyalty, and wore his heart on his sleave during his time here. He established great relationships with the organization and the fans. Will is a great guy, and I too am hurt by this move.

However, there is a flip side to the coin. And that is business. He is cut primarily for business purposes and for the beneficial sake of the team.
In all honesty, I know A LOT of you are pissed off, but really, I have to say, this is a good move for this organization. And I am not speaking directly from a business standpoint.

I would like to provide common logic, so all emotions aside. We have to think team. I've stressed this earlier in previous threads, Will Shields is a great guard, he defined the position, but, if cutting him enables us to utilize and balance our dollars and cents more to benefit the team, then by all means, Im in support of this move. If cutting Will Shields gets us under the cap, and enables us to pursue a defensive lineman, then by all means that IS more important than having him here. In easier terms what Im saying is, you have 3 SOLID GUARDS in Welbourn, Shields, and Black. All combined make 7-8 million.

So let me ask you guys a question, would you rather see this team keep a 36 year old guard whose been hampered with injuries knowing his play is on the decline, and is going to demand a high salary?

Or, cut Will because you have 2 solid guards behind him that are capable starters, and by letting his salary loose you can get under the cap and pick up a GOOD defensive player?

So, what would you guys rather do? I'll reiterate, Keep him and prevent us from getting a GOOD defensive player?

Or, let him loose? Get under the cap, and pick up a GOOD defensive player?

I choose TEAM, getting under the cap, and potentially clearing some cap $ for a defensive FA. But frankly, the 1st 2 are worth it, and likely all we're gonna get.

I think SHields will be resigned later.

He wants to stay in KC, we just had to dump slary to get under the cap for now. People (Green, Gonzo) will restructure if a new CBA doesn't get done soon.

That's my take too, unless this is a calculated move by Shields to force the Chiefs to cut him instead of retiring for financial reasons. In any event, I don't think Shields will play elsewhere this season. It will be the Chiefs or the end of the line for him. IMO.

It may be a struggle to just get under the cap. Signing FA's may be out of the question.

I think it was an ESPN article that said some teams are fearful of not having the space to sign draft picks, much less FA's

Sad day for sure. Hopefully we can find a way to re-sign him. I certainly understand why it had to be done, Will's a great guy to root for though. Man of the Year, etc, etc.

He's old and beat up, but the comment earlier in the thread about him being injured or whatever... the guy has never missed a game due to injury in 12 years! That is beyond incredible. The guy may be THE absolute #1 model of consistent play in the NFL over the last decade. I don't think last year was his best year, but it's not like he was a revolving door. 90% of Will Shields is better than most right guards who have ever played the game.

Shields' agent yesterday says Will wants to play 2 more years.

FoxSports (Jay Glazier) reported earlier today that Shields and Stills were informed they were going to be released.

KC Chiefs.com now has posted that Warfield, Stills, Barber, McCleon have been released, but no mention of Shields.

ESPN.com reports the same as kcchiefs.com, but goes on to say more vets are in renegotiations, but more cuts could come, listing some names that included Shields.

There's actually an updated quote from Shield's agent on that - mine was paraphrased and seems to be contrary to the actual quote.

"Will Shields will play this year, hopefully with the Chiefs but certainly with someone,”

Naturally that's probably more chest puffing for the benefit of Carl.

Additionally, the 3 day extension will probably render this action moot.
